NEITHER contestant left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS THE WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE?

There are 4 parts to the William Tell Overture. The first three are: The Dawn, the Storm, The Call to the Dairy Cows. According to Connolly Music, “The overture was designed to present the day in the life of a Switzerland in revolt.” The finale, March of the Swiss Soldiers “is all manic heroics on horseback. No wonder then it was used as the theme song for ‘The Lone Ranger'” and has been used in many other works “to increase the sensation of chaos or urgency to a scene.”

Watch Glen Campbell play the piece on the guitar:

Maddie thought it was La Bagatelle. She bet and lost it all.

Carlos wrote down “William Tell” which was not acceptable without “Overture”. He lost his $10,000 bet and won the game with the $10,400 he had left. Carlos Chaidez is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Over three weeks had passed since I’ve “skunked” the contestants at Final Jeopardy! I feel uncomfortable about being too satisfied with myself this time, though, since there were only two contestants left, and one missed on a technicality. But I had the 12-minute opening piece identified correctly, since I grew up listening to it often on a 45 RPM record in my big brother’s collection.

That makes my eleventh “skunk” for the calendar year 2020, not counting repeat broadcasts.

Strange game. For a while there it looked as if Kristin had lost her tongue, and when she finally spoke she buried herself even deeper.Oh well, at least she won 3 times and some nice dough. Mary kept hanging on tight on the seesaw.

Oh, Carlos— a 3-syllable word cost you 10 grand. Sigh.

  3. Michele Klein says:

Ouch….was Alex a little harsh in his opening comments about Kristen’s winnings this far or maybe I am too sensitive?

    • VJ says:

Michele, it really was an unnecessary way to open the show. Alex seems to want everyone to win over $20K every day, just like some folks want all three players to get Final Jeopardy! every day. Neither one is going to happen.

  4. Ryan McClelland says:

    Tough show all around.

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

Rough show plus a double stumper in the Final.

  6. Kevin Cheng says:

I feel poorly bad for Kristin, she was a good player despite having two small wins during a triple stumper and one big win from yesterday. It just wasn’t her day. Today we get a returning champion out of FJ! When was the last time we had a returning champion out of FJ!

    • William Weyser says:

That was Kyle Dallman in Late March of this year. He won $15,400 in 1 Day. It was a runaway for him, even though he missed Final Jeopardy!, but he didn’t lose a single penny. In Kyle’s 2nd appearance, he had tough luck with the 2 Daily Doubles in the Double Jeopardy! Round. Kyle finished the Double Jeopardy! with -$2,400, and that meant that he was not able to participate in Final Jeopardy!, but he did win $15,400 on his 1st day. With an extra $1,000 being added, Kyle left with $16,400, and never appeared on this show again.

  7. William Weyser says:

I don’t know what it is with Virtual El Centro, Tuesdays & JEOPARDY!, but almost every time I have online El Centro on a Tuesday, and I watch Tuesday’s episode of “JEOPARDY!”, the episode keeps resulting in a Triple Stumper, or in this case, a Double Stumper, which wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the Barry/Berry Gordy mess up, the India/Thailand confusion, and now, running out of time to add the word “Overture” to William Tell Overture.

    • Richard Corliss says:

Why didn’t Carlos write down overture?

      • William Weyser says:

1 half of me is thinking that Carlos didn’t even think about Overture, and the other half is thinking that maybe Carlos did think about that word, but he started a little too late, and ran out of time to add that word. Man, this has been an Up and Down day for everybody.

      • VJ says:

Watch it again, William. Carlos was done writing way before the music ended. He folded his hands in front of him and it looked like he was muttering something to himself. It then looked like he picked his pen up again as if he was going to add something, but the camera switched to Maddie.

Whatever, If he was going to add something at that point, he still had ample time.

        • William Weyser says:

I didn’t see that part, VJ. What happened was that my mom asked me when was the last time a returning champion didn’t make it to Final Jeopardy!, which was Kyle Dallman, and I was so focused on that thing, and talking to my mom about it, that I wasn’t paying attention to what happened with Carlos.

      • Lex Bloom says:

Given that Carlos omitted the word “overture” in his response, I feel Jeopardy made a bad ruling. The result smacks of an unfair “gotcha” maneuver, since he did write the name “William Tell”, which was the dominant subject matter in the first place.

  8. Lou says:

This wasn’t a tough final but who was the actual composer of the William Tell Overture, VJ?

    • VJ says:

Rossini wrote it, Lou (as the article I linked to will tell you)

@Rhonda, the last time it was an FJ! answer was in May 2018. They asked for the name of the opera that time, so poor Carlos wouldn’t have lost $10K over one word! The reason it seems like a more recent clue is because it was on the 2 years part of the recap earlier this year.

      • rhonda says:

Thanks, VJ! That’s a shame about Carlos missing out because of one word.
I loved listening to the Glen Campbell clip, that was so great! Thanks so much for posting it!

        • VJ says:

I’m glad you liked it, Rhonda. I liked that Beach Boys clue today. Dennis was the cutest.

I was thinking they would have a clue on Dennis Farina when I saw that category.

        • rhonda says:

Of course, I love the Beach Boys lol! Dennis was the cutest, I agree.
I was thinking of Dennis the Menace myself.

  9. Richard Corliss says:

OH, MAN!! It wasn’t anybody’s day. They were up and down over and over.

  10. JP says:

My pronunciations of both ‘average’ and ‘conference’ are two syllables long, and I’m guessing that’s the case for most regional dialects in America (that’s not a complaint about the clue, as there are obviously three syllable pronunciations of those words).
