Matt Amodio’s Jeopardy Statistics

Matt Amodio stepped onto the Jeopardy! stage for the first time on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts was the guest host this week. The reigning Jeopardy! champ was Josh Saak. It was Josh’s 4th game and everyone was rooting for him to hang in there for 2 more games and a guaranteed spot in the Tournament of Champions. It was not to be. Matt only had a $400 lead over Josh at the end of Double Jeopardy! but that was all he needed. Both men got Final Jeopardy right and Matt won the game in a big way when he bet everything he had. Matt kept on winning and by Friday, he had accumulated $101,400.

Notes: These stats are for Season 37. They will be updated when Matt’s run continues in Season 38. (R) after Matt’s Winnings means he had a runaway. An asterisk after a Daily Double amount means he made it a true Daily Double, although he would not call his bet a true Daily Double. He would generally just say the amount he had available.

At the start of Week 2 (July 26-30, 2021), Matt was on his 4th game, just like Josh was the week before. Actor, former Reading Rainbow host and one-time celebrity contestant, Levar Burton, presided over the games in this week. The record setting began with Matt setting a new top score for Season 37 on Wednesday when he finished with $47,000. On Thursday, he broke his own record by $27,000 when he won $74,000.

Week 3 featured runaway games for Matt every day as David Faber became Matt’s third guest host. On Tuesday in Game 10, Matt made his largest Daily Double bet — $13,000. It was the last DD of the game and the only one he landed on, which was unusual in and of itself. Matt set a record for the most money ever lost in Final Jeopardy! in the whole history of the show when he lost $37,000 on Wednesday.

Matt moved on to Guest Host No. 4 when Joe Buck hosted the last week of Season 37. In a bit of déjà vu, Matt took another big hit on Monday when he lost $34,000 in Final Jeopardy! On Wednesday, his winnings went over the half million mark. On Thursday, Matt’s 17x winnings topped Jason Zuffranieri’s 19x winnings of $532,496. That made Matt No. 3 for highest winnings in regular play, behind mega-champs, Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer.

Matt ended Season 37 with one less win than 19x champs David Madden and Jason Zuffranieri. (You may remember that Jason was a 6x winner at the end of Season 35 and came back in Season 36 to win 13 more games). Matt just needs to win two games to surpass David. If he wins the first 3 games of Season 38, he will replace 20x champ Julia Collins as No. 3 on Jeopardy!’s Hall of Fame list for Consecutive Games Won (Column 1). As noted above, he is already No. 3 for Highest Winnings in Regular Game Play (Column 2).

After 8 games, Jeopardy! must have noticed and been getting a ton of negative feedback about Matt’s penchant for responding with “What’s” to every clue, regardless of whether it was a person, place or thing. They felt compelled to publish “What are … Some Questions About Jeopardy! on July 30th on J!Buzz. It’s hardly the first time that it’s been explained that the rules simply state that answers must be phrased in the form of a question. It’s come up when the response to a clue is already a question. It’s come up when flustered players blurt out “what is” instead of “who is”. What can you say besides nitpickers gonna nitpick? I have no doubt it will come up again despite Jeopardy!’s cautionary “Don’t get cute!”

For Matt, one of the highlights of his Season 37 run had to be his chat story with Joe Buck when they talked about Game 7 of the 2016 World Series that they were both at. Matt brought up how as a big Cleveland Indians fan, he was thrilled over Rajai Davis’ great play that tied Cleveland with Chicago. Matt said His elation ended a couple of innings later when the Cubs won the series. We think that was only topped when Joe Buck told Matt it was “an absolute honor” to share the stage with him at the end of Friday’s game.

Season 38 kicked off on September 13, 2021. Matt Amodio returned for Game 19. He won that game and every other game for the rest of the week. They were all runaways. When we left off in Season 37, Matt had amassed $574,801. He added $251,000 this week.

Matt Amodio fans wanted to see the champ go over the million dollar mark in this up-and-down week. Matt lost a few Daily Doubles. His $15,000 bet on DD3 in Game 25 was the biggest hit, but he still pulled off a runaway in that game. Matt made up for it with an over $40K payday on Friday, the day he went over the million dollar mark.

That broke James Holzhauer’s 32-game record. This knocked James down to third place in number of consecutive games won. Ken Jenning continues to hold the No. 1 spot with 74 consecutive wins.

He’s Jeopardy!’s latest millionaire and, as of last Friday (10/1/2021), he is now the holder of second place for consecutive games won in regular play. The week began in stellar fashion with Matt winning $83,000 on Monday, his highest daily payout up to 10/4/2021. Every game was a runaway.

After Matt Amodio won his 33rd game on Friday, 10/1/2021, the “beat Ken Jennings’ 74-game record” chatter began immediately, and it only built during the week of 10/4/2021 as Matt’s winning streak continued. However, it all came to an end on Monday, 10/11/2021 when Matt was defeated by Jonathan Fisher. Matt won the $1,000 consolation prize. Here are his scores in his last game:
