Final Jeopardy: Geographic Namesakes (3-31-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/31/2020) in the category “Geographic Namesakes” was:

A county in England has an ocean coastline roughly twice as long as the 18 miles of this U.S. State named for it

New champ Kyle Dallman, a political recruiter & trainer from Cincinnati, OH, won $15,400 yesterday. In Game 2, his opponents are: J.R. Mannetta, Dean Of Students from Jamaica Plain, MA; and Leanne Gonzalez-Singer, a legal secretary from New York, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Animal Facts – Possessive Phrases – Baseball Lingo – Similar Brand Names – Its Nearest Neighbor Nation – Add a Letter

Leanne landed on the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Similar Brand Names” under the $1,000 clue, with just the first two categories left after it. She was in third place with $2,200, half of J.R.’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

J.R. finished in the lead with $6,400. Leanne was second with $5,800 and Kyle was last with $4,400.

Round 2 Categories: Remember James Garfield! – Missing Pieces – Movie Title Females – Plays & Playwrights – Behind the TV & Radio Call Letters – C Before E, After I

Kyle found the first Daily Double in “TV & Radio Call Letters” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues to go after it. He was in third place with $6,400 now, $13,800 less than Leanne’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Neiman-Marcus. That was WRONG.

Chicago’s WLS once stood for “World’s Largest Store” to promote this store, which then owned the station. show

Kyle got the last Daily Double in “Remember James Garfield!” under the $2,000 clue, the last clue on the board. He was in negative territory, at -$400 and this was his only hope of sticking around for FJ! He bet the $2,000 allowance. For want of a better answer, he said “Know Nothing”, although he knew that was WRONG.

Garfield served 9 terms in Congress as one of these alliterative Republicans who wanted equality for African Americans.

Leanne finished in the lead with $20,200. J.R. was next with $11,200. Kyle was out of the game at negative $2,400.

BOTH contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS NEW HAMPSHIRE?

New Hampshire is the U.S. state that has an 18-mile border with the Atlantic Ocean, known as the seacoast region. New Hampshire was named for England’s Hampshire County by Captain John Mason, according to World Atlas.

Hampshire County in England borders the English Channel. World Atlas also says “The English Channel itself is a part of the Atlantic Ocean, and it separates the island of Great Britain (part of the UK) from northern France and joins the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.” The Hampshire County Council says the coast of Hampshire “from Highcliffe on the Dorset border to Chichester Harbour in West Sussex, is about 230 miles (370 kilometres).” I don’t know what part of that 230 miles the clue is referring to.

J.R. bet it all and finished with $22,400.

Leanne bet $2,300 and won the game with $22,500. Leanne Gonzalez-Singer is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (3/31/2020) Kyle Dallman, J.R. Mannetta, Leanne Gonzalez-Singer

2 triple stumpers from the last round:

MISSING PIECES ($400) English first person singular pronouns & 1970 song title words: I, Me…

PLAYS & PLAYWRIGHTS ($1600) This American’s play “The Zoo Story” was once staged in Regent’s Park, near the menagerie

  1. Ryan McClelland says:

So Kyle becomes the latest contestant this season to wipe out before Final J! and speaking of wipe out, How many contestants were wiped out this season?

    • William Weyser says:

7 Contestants: Rahul Garabadu, Priscilla Drobes, Audrey Koh, Jon Furhman, Waseem Daher, Aaron Shepard & Kyle Dallman.

      • Ryan McClelland says:

Yeah but you forgot to add Brad Rutter from the second match of game 2 of Jeopardy The Greatest.

        • William Weyser says:

Yes, but none of the Greatest of All Time episodes are considered Season 36 Episodes. So, Brad Rutter doesn’t count.

      • Richard Corliss says:

How many contestant were wiped out in Season 30? Not counting Kevin Shen.

  2. Richard Corliss says:

Kyle, we come to you first, and I start by saying: “Darn those Daily Doubles”.

  3. Lou says:

This game wasn’t too nice to Kyle after he blew both daily doubles in the second round. I really wonder if nervousness took a toll on him. But congrats to Leanne and J.R. on getting final right. Speaking of Sears, when was the last time you shopped there, VJ?

I am surprised that no one heard of the I Me song from Beatle.

    • VJ says:

The first round went pretty well, with only one triple stumper and the scores fairly even. Then things went kind of went downhill for Kyle and Leanne dominated the last round. I was happy to see both J.R. and Leanne get the final, even though I didn’t think anyone would get it.

Amazing that I still remember the Monopoly board. I never liked that game for a few reasons — it took too long to play and my little brother cried when he lost.

I don’t remember the last time I went to Sears, Lou.

    • Howard says:

Both those DDs were toughies, in my opinion.
I shopped at our Sears and K-Mart right up until they closed in Jan 2019.
The younger players often don’t know music/pop culture from my era, and “I Me …” is a very obscure Beatles tune from their final album. That said, my jaw often drops when the younger players rattle off answers about people, places, and events from the 1970s and earlier.
