3/14/2019Alex Trebek thanks everyone for their prayers, well wishes and advice

Just one day after the 2019 Jeopardy! All-Stars Tournament finished airing, Alex Trebek, the beloved long-time host of the popular quiz show, announced that he has been diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Trebek made the announcement in a video that was a little more than a minute long, saying that it has been his policy to be open and transparent with the show’s viewers and that he also wanted to prevent the news reaching fans through sensational media reports that might be “overblown or inaccurate.”

Trebek humbly noted that he is but one of 50,000 people in the United States diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year. He said that he plans to keep on working and joked that he has to because he is contractually obligated to host Jeopardy! for 3 more years. With the love, support and prayers of his family, friends and legions of fans, Trebek is confident that he can beat the low survival rate associated with this disease.

This unexpected horrible news has sent shock waves far and wide as, to many, Alex Trebek is synonymous with Jeopardy! The hashtag #TheRealJeopardyAllStar appeared on Twitter and Buzzy Cohen tweeted: “My heart sinks. Few things have changed the course of my life the way this man and this show has. As I’ve come to know him there is nothing but love, respect, and admiration. Alex your whole jeopardy family is behind you. #TheRealJeopardyAllStar

Here are reactions of some of the other contestants who participated in the All-Star Tournament:

Brad Rutter: Oh my God. If anyone can beat this, you can. Sending heartfelt good thoughts and best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. We love you, Uncle Alex!

Ken Jennings One thing I know for a fact: Alex is very aware of how much he means to millions of people, and how we will be pulling for him…I hope that’s a comfort.

Alex Jacob:That was my grandfather’s diagnosis and he didn’t live long (love you Papa). Maybe Alex will be luckier. We chatted briefly at the wrap party and he was so nice about my missed daily double, almost like he genuinely felt bad about it. I hope I remembered to thank him.

Julia Collins: This is just terrible and I’m so sorry that Alex is going through this.

Austin Rogers: Alex Trebek is a fixture in the American firmament and we’re all behind him. What a great man, so kind to my family and so warm to all of us contestants. Send him your love.

Monica Thieu: This took the breath out of my lungs. We’re with you, Alex. All the way.

Seth Wilson: Alex Trebek is unbelievably good at what he does, and this is terrible news. Everyone is rooting for you, Alex.

Ben Ingram: Alex Trebek is tough as nails. I know I’ll be praying.

We would all like to send our prayers for Alex Trebek with many positive thoughts that he will be able to beat this. Stay strong, Alex!

Hello Alex! Greetings from Nova Scotia!
Every night, my husband (58) and I (62) watch you on Jeopardy.

My husband has had Parkinson’s for twenty years and continues forward. I have Multiple Sclerosis and Environmental Illness, wheel chair bound. However, we met in the hospital at our worst, both paralyzed. We became good friends and got married 7 years ago, 7 months after we met. 🙂 :). Guy has no living relatives (an only child born to two only children) and now shares mine. Wecontinue to travel our journeys together, placing our faith and trust in the loving God Who walks with us. Like the parable of the tiny mustard seed, our faith wiol continue to grow with every trial we face. Some will esperience more than others but we must never lose hope.

Guy’s paternal grandmother used to have a budgie bird which sat in a cage on top her fridge. Jo-Jo could see the television from his perch and learned to tweet the music to your show the very moment it aired. The bird had perfect putch…which probably tells you how much Jeopardyvwas watched! Guy remembers it well and we continue to watch your show with fond memories. It is great to see the 1984 reruns and we even OCCASINALLY get more answers. Congratulations on bringing so many years of happiness and challenges in to our homes! We keep you in our thoughts and prayers on your journey. Wendy

  25. Jane Ellington Caranna says:

Dear Alex, just wanted you to know you & your family are in our thoughts and prayers; praying for your strength, healing, & peace. My dear mother loved Jeopardy & loved you especially. She never missed a Jeopardy show & usually beat any one of us who were watching with her. My father was even jealous of her obsession with you…so funny! Our local television changed the time of when the show aired once; they took Jeopardy off of the 4 or 4:30 p.m. time slot & aired it at 2 or 3 a.m. Mother was so mad that she made my older sister call the station manager & demand it be changed back to its original time slot! The station manager listened & in a couple of days it was changed back to its original time slot! Sadly, we lost Mother in 2011, & still miss her deeply, but we know she’s in heaven looking down on us, & we know God is blessing her in heaven with some of her favorite things. I’m sure at the top of that list is her beloved Jeopardy & it’s longtime host! Thanks for all the joy you & Jeopardy brought her while she was still on this earth! We love you, Alex!

    • VJ says:

I am adding you to our Noon Day Prayer List,, knowing that He who created all, and sent His son to did for our sins is more than able to cure all diseases. In the name of Jesus, selah upon your Faith it shall be done.

  116. Ilene says:

Please just remember Alex, if just one person can survive exactly what you have (and they have) there is no reason why you can’t also! Many years ago, Prime Minister Anthony Eden of England had pancreatic cancer and came to the Leahy Clinic in Boston to a specialist who performed surgery on him and he survived. My late father had pancreatic cancer and went to the same doctor for surgery. After the surgery, the doctor told my mother that he was not able to save my father’s life but made dying a lot easier for him. He was given 6 months to live and he lived for almost 2 years, dying at the young age of 44. I am convinced it is the way the doctor does the delicate surgery that can make a difference (and your luck).

  172. aaaa says:

Alex will have done 7992 episodes of Jeopardy! if he completes the taping of this season, with eight tapings (40 episodes) to go. 7979 out of 7980 syndicated episodes (Pat Sajak switched places with him, hosting J! on 4/1/1997 while Alex hosted WOF), plus 13 episodes of Summer 1990’s Super Jeopardy on ABC. The 8000th syndicated episode will air on October 4th. J! considered 65 rerun episodes from Summer 1985 to be new episodes, so their numbering is off by 65.

  178. Debbie says:

I feel like I have come to know Alex as I would a cherished uncle – I was lucky a few years of go to see a live taping of “Jeopardy” and ask Alex a question during a commercial break and he very graciously provided a humorous answer! I cannot even imagine not seeing him each evening in my living room – my prayers go out to Alex and his family as they prepare to fight this insidious illness.

  179. Danny says:

Shocked and saddened to hear. From my days of watching daytime Jeopardy with Art Fleming to today’s show under the very capable guidance of Alex Trebek, Jeopardy has been an important part of my life. Difficult to describe how much I enjoy Alex as the shows host. I have a very good friend who survived pancreatic cancer and I am eager to add Alex’s name to that list. Prayers are with him.

  180. Reesa Dawkins says:

May God Bless you and yours. We are praying for you everyday. I was diagnosed with breast Cancer just 3 weeks ago, so every treatment and every doctors appointment, I will play your announcement , starting today and it gives me strength and hope. Thank you for all the years of joy you have brought us with Jeopardy.

  181. Michael says:

Wishing you and your family, Peace, and Strength

  182. Pamela Goebel says:

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Alex. We watch Jeopardy from Canada every day and you are such a great host – you have to finish your 3 year contract. All the best.

  183. aaaa says:

The usually reliable Jboard says the week of May 27-31 was taped yesterday. There are eight more taping dates through April 9th for this season. It is believed syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire will air its last first run episodes that week, as it appears to have been cancelled. I wonder if Chris Harrison could be a go-to guy for a temporary or replacement host if that is needed? Because it’s not Matt Lauer 🙂

  184. John B./I. says:

I am still feeling like struck by lightning. As I said, makes you see things in perspective. He looks so healthy, but p.c. is one of the sneakiest and most difficult (and late) to detect diseases.

The good thing – if there is such a thing here – is that medicine makes incredible progress on a literally daily basis. Doris’ and my prayers are with Alex!

  185. John Christian Ambion says:

I also hope Alex Trebek is doing well after a very shocking week when Luke Perry of “Riverdale” died because of cancer. I hope he’s doing well.

  186. DORIS says:

Isn’t it tragic that it takes things like that to put everything in life in perspective?
The entire celebrated All Star game will be remembered by Alex’ announcement after it had aired.

  187. JJ says:

Wow… I just read the post a few minutes ago. Sad, sad, sad…

  188. JP says:

“Hi everyone, I have some news to share with all of you and it’s in keeping with my longtime policy of being open and transparent with our Jeopardy! fan base. I also wanted to prevent you from reading or hearing some overblown or inaccurate reports regarding my health. So therefore, I wanted to be the one to pass along this information.

Now, just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Now normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working. And with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease. Truth told, I have to! Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host Jeopardy! for three more years! So help me. Keep the faith and we’ll win. We’ll get it done. Thank you.”
