WHO IS CLARK GABLE?

1934’s Best Picture “It Happened One Night” starred Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in what is often called the first screwball comedy. It was also the first film to win the Oscar Grand Slam: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.

1935’s Best Picture “Mutiny on the Bounty” starred Clark Gable and Charles Laughton as Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh. Franchot Tone had a supporting role as Roger Byam. However, the Oscars did not have a Best Supporting Actor award so all 3 men were nominated for Best Actor. They all lost but Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories were created.

1939’s Best Picture “Gone with the Wind”, the most famous of the three films, starred Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh as Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara. Vivien Leigh won Best Actress; Clark Gable lost Best Actor to Robert Donat (for 1939’s “Goodbye, Mr. Chips”). Hattie McDaniel (Mammy) won Best Supporting Actress. Interestingly, Thomas Mitchell won Best Supporting Actor, but not for his role as Gerald O’Hara, Scarlett’s father in “GWTW”– for his role as Doc Josiah Boone in “Stagecoach” (1939).

Stefan bet $1,799 and finished with $3,599.

Christine bet $3,000, bringing her up to $14,600.

Margaret bet $3,000 and won the game with $16,600. Margaret Shelton is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Good, competitive game today. Christine likely would have won if she only had known Fellini, which was not difficult. Legendary Italian director. I applaud her for beating cancer. My own wife succumbed to it after four tough years. I saw a post on FB tonight about how she was receiving treatments during her audition process. But IMO she is not ToC material. She won a nice chunk of change, $75K, and I hope she stays cancer-free and gets the organ she craves to play.

I knew “GWTW” and “It Happened One Night” had both been Best Picture in the 30s, so it was easy to connect the dots from there.

@Howard, please accept my condolences about your wife’s struggle and yes, congratulations to Christine on overcoming cancer.

I have to agree with you about the ToC — there were far too many triple stumpers in Christine’s games for me to think she will do well in the ToC.

As for FJ in this game, I saw all three of those movies and I saw Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando, too. I prefer the Laughton/Gable film myself but Brando’s has its merits.

  2. Rick says:

The year 1939 was obviously a dead giveaway in FJ as the actor could only have been Clark Gable.

  3. Louis says:

Christine had a great 4 game run and has now qualified for the tournament of champions. Its been a while since our last four day champ John focht made his appearance. The gone with the wind Movie definitely helped me here with Clark Gable since movies trivia in dos also asked the same question in the academy awards category. Now we shall see if Marge can also win four games. But will we see jackie Fuchs in the second chance tournament if anyone here knows?

    • VJ says:

Lou, I don’t think Christine has automatically qualified for the ToC. If that was the case Ken Jennings would have said something like “we’ll see you in the ToC” but he said “I suspect we have not seen the end of Christine Whelchel.” I’m pretty sure that depends on whether they need to fill the ToC spots with 4x winners by the time they decide to have the ToC. Christine is at the bottom of the ToC Tracker at the moment.

As for the Second Chance Tournament, I don’t believe that is for Jeopardy! champs at all. Jackie Fuchs was a 4x champ in Season 35. I believe The Second Chance Tournament is for people who played really well against unfair odds, like Pam Schoenberg. She was one of the few players who was able to prevent Amy Schneider from getting a runaway. Amy got FJ and Pam did not, but Pam couldn’t have won even if she knew FJ because of Amy’s huge lead.

At any rate, I am hoping they will develop some sensible criteria for the Second Chance Tournament.

      • Lou says:

Ah I see, Thank you for the information! I definitely hope to see this new criteria and soon. We have had some pretty strong streakers so far in 2021 and this year as well although filling up the spots have been a bit slow with a few 1 day and three game winners who have yet to qualify.
