Queen Elizabeth II Retirement Rumors: 2020 Edition

There are a lot of reports floating around that the longest-reigning English Queen, Elizabeth II, will step down when she turns 95 years old in 2021 and hand over the crown to her 71 year-old son, Charles, the Prince of Wales.

But, it turns out, this “news” is nothing more than the opinion of royal biographer, Robert Jobson. According to the Daily Mail, Jobson says he firmly believes the Queen will step down when she turns 95 (which would be next April 21st). It’s also a rehashing of reports from 2019.

But why age 95? — Well, that is how old Prince Philip was when he formally stepped out of the public eye. Here’s a video from November 2019 discussing it.

At that time, it was noted that the Queen had already delegated many of her royal duties to Prince Charles. Richard Berthelsen, CTV’s royal commentator, said: “It would be an untenable situation if he were to be really running the show more formally and in more tricky situations and yet not hold the title….”

That is rehashed in the Daily Mail article through a comment from Newsweek Royal Reporter Jack Royston: “I think she won’t want to, but realistically she will get to a point where she has handed over everything to Charles and then how do you look your son in the eye and tell him he is not going to be King?”

So it appears that we’ll have to wait to see if there’s an official announcement from Buckingham Palace next March or April. In any event, sooner or later Queen Elizabeth will be joining the list of 21st Century Monarchy Changes.
