WHAT IS SMOG?

Here’s a quote from Words in Their Own Words on Dennis Vickers’ blog that coincidentally mentions the word “liger” (one response to yesterday’s $200 Animal Names clue): “Sometimes, though, two words mate to produce a third. Portmanteau is one form. This is common among Germans and for them the mating is often casual and temporary. In English the process has produced many long-standing words. Smog and motel are examples made necessary by circumstances of the 20th century. Brunch and liger as well…. Which parent will appear first in the offspring? Smog might just as easily come out foke and motel might have been hotor.”

There is a footnote from the Online Etymology Dictionary on the origin of the word smog.

Elizabeth did not have a response. She bet and lost it all.

Barbara got it right. She bet $11,599, finishing with $25,599.

Scott also got it. He bet $10,401 so he won the match with $28,001 and he is the new champ. Here is a link to Scott’s “Disalmanac” that he talked about during the chat. “Stay Disinformed!”

I am 76, have had a varied life, served in West Berlin as the “Wall” was being built. I love trivia. I’d like to participate in the next interview you have near the Charlotte, NC. area.
