Final Jeopardy: The Oscars (7-6-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/6/2015), in the category “The Oscars” was:

“Gladiator” is close, but this film has the earliest historical setting of any Best Picture Oscar winner.

New champ Hilary Carney won $6,400 on Friday when she had the most money left after an FJ nobody got. Today her adversaries are: Jess Lindoerfer, from Putney, VT; and Shu-Ping Shen, from New York, NY.

Round 1: Jess found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Also a Keyboard Key” under the $600 clue before the first break. She was in second place with $1,600, $600 less than Hilary’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Round 2: Shu-Ping found the first Daily Double in “Country Men” under the $2,000 clue with 4 clues left on the board after it. He was in third place with $7,400, $8,000 less than Jess in the lead. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

Hilary finished in the lead with $17,800. Jess was next with $15,400 and Shu-Ping was in third place with $11,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BEN-HUR?

In articles on Turner Classic Movies, one synopsis for Ben-Hur (1959) says “Judah Ben-Hur is a wealthy Jewish prince living with his mother and sister in 1st century Jerusalem.” The film starred Charlton Heston who also won Best Actor. William Wyler won Best Director.

“Decades after the genre’s popularity had waned” Gladiator (2000) “set in the 2nd century scored big, grossing nearly four times its cost and garnering generally good reviews, not to mention numerous awards.” Its director, Ridley Scott, won an Oscar as did its star, Russell Crowe.

Shu-Ping got it right. He bet $1,601 and that brought him up to $13,001.

Jess also got it right. She bet $2,401 and finished with $17,801.

Hilary thought it was “The Ten Commandments” (not a Best Picture winner). She lost her $12,400 bet and was left with $5,400 and that made Jess Lindoerfer the new Jeopardy! champ.

FJ Results: 7-6-15

Jess is a study-abroad program manager. During the chat, she shared some advice she was given before she came on the show: if it’s the end of the game and you know you’re going to lose, just do something really crazy and maybe someone will give you your own reality show.

The Ten Commandments are set in about 1500B.C. How was that not the correct answer?

Don’t know why but I was rooting for Jess to win. Very good match. Congrats on your win Jess!!!

@Eric, good call buddy. We never envisioned anyone writing the Ten Commandments. That was wild.

Funny you say that, I was rooting for Jess too. I liked her demeanor. I thought the wagers were a little strange, though.

    • VJ says:

Yes, I was kinda rooting for Jess, too. Still, had to feel a little bad for Hilary. She was so happy about getting that last DD and she would have had a big win.

and, of course, @Eric, congrats on the right prediction! I’m Spartacus!

      • Cece says:

Yeah, I know what you’re saying about Hilary — the DD, possible big payday and all— but that hand pointing…

I was rooting for Jess 100% (and if not Jess, Shu-Ping). I literally cheered out loud when Hilary got it wrong although I was disappointed with both Jess and Shu-Ping for their passive bets,

I’m glad I’m not the only one that couldn’t handle Hilary’s numerous and distracting quirks for even one more day. GO JESS!

    • Eric S says:

      Thank you!
      Lol: there’s usually one.
