Final Jeopardy: Nations of the World (6-29-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/29/2017) in the category “Nations of the World” was:

Its contiguous territory covers 36 degrees of latitude, the longest stretch of any country not in the top 10 in area.

New champ Nathan Flynn won $18,001 yesterday. In his second game, he is up against these two players: Megan Williams, from Brooklyn, NY; and Clint Thompson, from Putnam, CT.

Round 1 Categories: Invertebrates – “N” the Map – Sports – Add a Letter – Lyre, Lyre – Pants on Fire

Megan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Add a Letter” under the $600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. She was in third place with $400, $1,200 less than Nathan’s lead. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

Nathan finished in the lead with $5,400. Megan was second with $5,000 and Clint was last with $4,800.

Round 2 Categories: At the Opera – Woody – World History – Bring Your “EI” Game – Economics – Frequently Banned Books

Clint found the first Daily Double in “World History” under the $1,200 clue on the very first pick. The scores were the same as above. He bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT.

Nathan found the last Daily Double in “Economics” under the $1,600 clue. Only the $2,000 clue in the same category was left after it. In second place
with $11,000, he had $8,800 less than Clint in second place. He bet $5.00 and came up with overtime. That was WRONG.

Clint finished in the lead with $19,800. Nathan was next with $10,995 and Megan was in third place with $6,200.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS CHILE?

Wikipedia’s geography section on Chile says: “Excluding its Pacific islands and Antarctic claim, Chile lies between latitudes 17° and 56°S, and longitudes 66° and 75°W. Chile is among the longest north-south countries in the world. If one considers only mainland territory, Chile is unique within this group in its narrowness from east to west, with the other long north-south countries (including Brazil, Russia, Canada, and the United States, among others) all being wider from east to west by a factor of more than 10.”

Alas, I could not find a list of countries by latitudinal span, but I did find a Sporcle quiz on the countries with the widest latitude spans. It doesn’t go by contiguous though.

Megan bet it all and finished with $12,400.

Nathan bet $6,615, bringing him up to $17,610.

Clint bet $2,200, winning the match with $22,000 and he is the new Jeopardy! champ.

@vj, glad to see Nathan calm down today. I think once he got the hang of the buzzer he was okay. Glad to see Clint win though. Congratulations Clint. Loved the Economics category but got a brain freeze on Keynes. Imo this was a good match. Very sharp contestants. 😀

Well, I’m happy that another contestant from Connecticut won but it has been almost six weeks now after David Clemmons won the teachers tournament so I really hope that Clint will win more games before July gets here, right VJ? Is it true, to say that we get a multi game champ every six weeks each month?

    • Dalton Higbee says:

So Clint Thompson is the first Connecticut champion since Justin Scace back at the end of 2016. But it makes it up here for yesterday.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, idk, I don’t keep track of that. I know we’ve had back-to-back multi-champs now and then. I was just happy to see everybody get FJ today. Sure seems like it’s been a long while.
