The Girlfriend (Amazon Prime Miniseries)

I thought I would watch and recap each episode of “The Girlfriend”, a 6-episode miniseries on Amazon Prime, but that’s not what happened. It’s a drama about woman named Cherry, who is from the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak. She takes up with a doctor named Daniel, who is from a rich family.

Daniel lives with his parents and he’s kind of a Mama’s boy. His mama, Laura, initially becomes suspicious of Cherry when Cherry claims to have attended a posh private school. Laura knows enough about the school to know it’s a lie. That would put any mom on her guard. Then Daniel invites Cherry to go on vacation with him and his family in Spain, and little things keep piling up that tend to justify Laura’s suspicions that Cherry is not only a liar, she’s a low-class golddigger.

I started watching the series on Sunday. On Monday, I watched Episode 2 and by the end of it, Laura and Cherry had declared war and I was hooked. I ended up binging the rest of it.

I know I’ve seen the technique they use of showing the same incident from 2 different viewpoints in another movie. In this case, you’re watching Cherry and Laura recall several incidents where they are reasonable and “the enemy” isn’t. You’re bound to feel conflicted on who the bad guy really is here. On one hand, Laura’s husband and friends don’t think Cherry is as awful as Laura would like them to believe. On the other hand, Cherry’s own mother is always willing to provide her daughter with an alibi despite serious reservations.

Not wanting to spoil your enjoyment of the drama, there’s not much more I can reveal except that Laura gets some good advice from her friend, Lilith, to let Daniel find out that Cherry is a liar on his own. Laura fails to take that advice and before you know it, she’s doing quite a bit of lying herself!
