NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
In November 1855, Scottish physician and explorer David Livingstone became the first European to lay eyes on Victoria Falls, an event he recorded in his journal and later wrote about in “Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa” in 1857. The Livingstone Tourism Association website has an article on the topic that says the particular passage containing “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in flight” is often mistakenly thought to refer to the Falls, but actually refers to stretches of the Zambezi River upstream.
From 2001: HISTORY FROM HOLLYWOOD $500: In 1939 Spencer Tracy searched for this African explorer, played by Cedric Hardwicke
Cristina thought it was Timbuktu. She lost her $6,789 bet and finished with $211.
James came up with Kilimanjaro. That cost him $17,990 and left him with $10.
Jason went with “the source of the Nile.” He lost $9,000 but won the game with the $18,600 he had left. His 2-day total is $45,200.
2 triple stumpers from the first round:
AUDIBLE SUMMER READING ($1000) James Franco gives voice to this absurdist novel by Kurt Vonnegut, “Listen: Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time”
WHAT’D THE CAPTAIN SAY? ($800) A bitt is a sturdy post in a deck for fastening cables and ropes, so when the captain says, “hold on to” this, it means to grab the last part of the line, not to hang on until no hope remains
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Colleges”
When this school opened in 1845, the curriculum for the class of 50 had math & navigation, chemistry & gunnery & steam. show

Happy 79th birthday to Alex and congrats to Jason on his second win. The contestants are not that far off in Africa although they should have gone towards Zimbabwe. This should not have been a triple stumper VJ since it is a simple geography question. The clue didn’t ask for a country or a mountain unless they didn’t understand it?
I dunno, Lou. A week and a half ago, Livingstone was a wrong answer in a clue about finding the source of the Nile on The Best Trivia Show Ever and I happened to look him up, so I assumed that Victoria Falls was the answer today, but now I don’t think so. If you look on google books at the passage (and even before that) where he says the quote in the clues, he is actually talking about scenery on the way to the Falls, the trees and such:
“Some trees resemble the great spreading oak; others assume the character of our own elms and chestnuts; but no one can imagine the beauty of the view from any thing witnessed in England. It had never been seen before by European eyes but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”
Then he starts talking about the Falls. After seeing all that (incl. the article I linked to in the recap), I don’t think it’s a good clue.

I wonder if they would have accepted the Zambezi River as a correct answer? I had never associated Livingstone with Victoria Falls before.
I don’t think so, Rhonda. But if someone had responded with the Zambezi and was able to show them the passage, I think that person would get an invite back.
Thanks, VJ.
Happy birthday to Alex Trebek who turned 79 years old today. Just a reminder that this Friday is the Season Finale. Whoever wins on Friday’s game will get to relax for 6 weeks. Congrats to Jason, a 2 day champion with $45,200.
