WHO IS (OLIVER) BROWN?

In 1951, the NAACP in Topeka, Kansas recruited African-American parents to mount a legal challenge against the “separate but equal” doctrine that permitted segregation in public schools. Oliver Brown was the only male among 13 plaintiffs and he was listed first “as a legal strategy to have a man at the head of the roster”, according to the Myth or Truth page on the National Park Serivce website. (Note: Although one of the women’s surnames was also Brown, she was not Oliver Brown’s wife.)

In a landmark decision in 1954, the U.S.Supreme Court ruled that state laws requiring separate but equal schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, striking down the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson ruling. Explore this and other landmark Supreme Court cases here.

Good FJ; I should have known it cold. I had the right idea but said Thurgood Marshall who, I think, was the lead attorney and not a plaintiff.

Only stumpers that surprised me were the Irish playwright and the national park.

I thought Cris was about to be defeated, too, but congrats to him on another successful win!

Wow! That game was tense to watch. I was wondering if it was going to be curtains for Cris. I was certain he didn’t know fj but that Poker face fooled me again.

  4. VJ says:

I got the information that Oliver Brown’s wife was not the plaintiff Darlene Brown from this Feb. 2022 article in which Oliver Brown’s daughter says a lot of stuff written about her father on the internet is not true. She mentions her mother, Leola, by name and also says that from an alphabetical perspective, Darlene Brown should have been the lead plaintiff, but her father was chosen because of his gender.

  5. Trevor Panno says:

I was looking forward to a new champion being crowned today.
