Final Jeopardy: 19th Century Contemporaries (6-17-22)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/17/2022) in the category “19th Century Contemporaries” was:

Congratulating her on the 1869 release of her biography, Frederick Douglass wrote, “I have wrought in the day –you in the night”

3x champ Megan Wachspress, an attorney from Berkeley, CA, has now won $34,402. In Game 4, her competitors are: Sadie Goldberger, an interpreter from Columbia, MD; and Molly Fleming, a community organizer from Minneapolis, MN.

Round 1 Categories: Historic Alliances – Wordplay-Pourri – Home Sweet Home Renovation – Think Pink – Stately Rivers – Pop Rocks

Sadie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Think Pink” under the $600 clue on the third pick of the round. She was in the lead with $400, $200 more than Megan in second place. Sadie bet $600 and she was RIGHT.

Introduced in 1957, this brand was packaged in little pink packets so that it would stand out in sugar bowls show

Sadie finished in the lead with $4,600. Megan was second with $2,000 and Molly was last with negative $400. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Sci-Fi Characters – His Widow Lived On – Marine Biology – The “IT” Department – The Quotable Movie – Such a Peasant Life

Molly found the first Daily Double in “Sci-Fi Characters” under the $800 clue on the second pick of the round. She got out of the red on the first $400 clue and was back at zero. Sadie had the lead with $4,600. Molly bet the $2,000 allowance and said the guy in the time machine. That was WRONG.

In an H.G. Wells tale, Griffin, whose face is wrapped in rags turns out to be this title guy show

Molly got the last Daily Double in “Such a Peasant Life” under the $1,600 clue with 4 clues left after it. She was in last place with $2,000, $7,400 less than Sadie’s lead. Molly bet $1,500 and went with Boudicca. That was WRONG.

Not much travel for us normally, but I am considering a pilgrimage to Glastonbury to see the grave of this legendary queen show

Sadie finished in the lead with $9,800. Megan was second with $9,200 and Molly was last with $3,300. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HARRIET TUBMAN?

The preface of Sarah Hopkins Bradford’s “Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman” contains 3 letters of commendations from 3 famous 19th century abolitionists: Gerrit Smith, Wendell Phillips and Frederick Douglass. Upon receiving Tubman’s request for such a letter, Douglass wrote directly to her: “I need such words from you far more than you can need them from me….” He pointed out that most of his endeavors were made in the public eye and met with encouragement and applause, while Tubman “encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people” than anyone he knew, except John Brown. Bradford published his entire letter in the preface. In 1886, Bradford also published “Harriet, the Moses of Her People”. Both biographies are freely available online.

Obviously, the reference to work at night refers to Tubman helping to free slaves via the Underground Railroad. Tubman also labored as a nurse during the Civil War and a Union spy. See a timeline of her life here.

Molly got it right. She bet $3,200 and finished with $6,500.

Megan got it right, too. Her $7,999 bet brought her up to $17,199.

Sadie was on track for a correct response but time ran out before she could complete “Tubman”. Sadie lost $7,500 and was left with $2,300. That made Megan Wachspress a 4-day champ with $51,601.

Final Jeopardy (6/17/2022) Megan Wachspress, Sadie Goldberger, Molly Fleming

2 triple stumpers from the last round:

THE QUOTABLE MOVIE ($400) “It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with… & it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead”

SUCH A PEASANT LIFE ($1200) You might think I’m revolting, but I swear I did not join Wat Tyler’s peasant revolt that stormed this fortress on June 14, 1381

Sadie was gypped on 6/17. It sure looked like Harriet Tubman IMHO (but subjective). Did anyone penalize the writers last night (6/22) for having 3 L’s in equally in FJ!? People are human and humans can make mistakes… I also believe the champ misspelled Allan in FJ! as well last evening but was not penalized (Allen). J! should give Sadie another chance to appear on their show and refine the rules for FJ!

Oh, and, VJ, I would have no qualms, at ALL, if you edited or moderated my posts after I point out something that might be missing. I would do it myself, were it an option.

    • VJ says:

No problem, Jason, I’ll get around to that sooner or later. I need to thank everyone who helpfully* points out a mistake or omission to show my appreciation.

      (*smartasses not included)

  3. Jacob Ska says:

I was really happy for Molly. She is proof that tenacity pays off. She was in the red several times (missed 2 daily doubles) but kept her composure, got back on the positive side, and ended up finishing in 2nd place. Imo that’s true sportsmanship. She never gave up. What a wonderful contestant to watch.

  4. rhonda says:

VJ, it was funny to have Mick Jagger show up in the Rock Dads category, at least it was answered correctly and no one said Michael Caine lol.

  5. Louis says:

There was one geography triple stumper that mentioned my home state river that no one knew.

Still can’t believe Sadie was penalized for that response. She could be back for the second chance tournament if possible.

  6. Ismael Gomez says:

It was unfortunate that Sadie was penalized in the Final and the DDs wasn’t nice to Molly.

    • William Weyser says:

I’m not worried about the Daily Doubles that Molly missed. I’m worried about Sadie being penalized for no good reason that I can come up with, except for leaving off a letter, or the judges not seeing Harriet Tubman clear enough. I’m not sure.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

I thought that we were going to have our first triple solve in over two months but Sadie did not complete her response and was correctly ruled incorrect by the judges. When was the last time at the exact date that all 3 players got FJ! right?

    • VJ says:

I think the last time all the players got FJ! right was on April 8th, 2022

      • Jason says:

That’s what I was thinking, although, to write the last name only, you would need a little more time anyways. If you know the last name, very, you know the first, but, don’t use it. As such, a tactical blunder.

VJ, there’s no link in the marine biology TS.

        • VJ says:

Thanks, Jason, I fixed that link.

I guess under the time pressure, she didn’t think of just writing the last name. It’s what we call “crunch time” You wouldn’t like me when it’s crunch time. 🤣🤣🤣

  8. Howard says:

“Jeopardy!” just ended here on the Left Coast. The internet is likely to blow up over what just happened in FJ. How they discerned sloppy handwriting from an incomplete answer is a mystery.
Maybe they reviewed the tape and saw her still writing when the Think Music ended.

FJ wasn’t too terribly difficult, and all 3 players got it. Working by night was a big hint.

Oh, did this 60-year Yankees fan wince when two of them guessed Babe Ruth and Yogi Berra. At least someone got it.

Quite a few tough stumpers. I knew the Broadway composer Frank and the type of flooring.

    • VJ says:

Yes, at least all 3 players knew it even if Sadie’s response was not accepted. I just added the ruling to the Spelling Decisions list with an image of what Sadie wrote. I have terrible eyesight so we can’t go by what it looks like to me

      • Jacob Ska says:

She seemed to not know it for sure. She scribbled out the H then scribbled out an S then misspelled the first name with two T’s which none of the other contestants did. Although no penalty because it did not change the pronunciation. Then according to J Archive wrote “Tubma” which has me baffled. She knew she was running out of time. Why not just write the last name? She would have had enough time & I’m sure that would have been accepted.

    • Kevin Oviatt says:

You mean Garrick like she said

  9. VJ says:

Sorry this came up so late — I thought it published at the usual time. Then I had some stuff to do and couldn’t believe it didn’t go through when I looked back!
