WHAT IS CITY LIGHTS?

“City Lights” (1931) features Charlie Chaplin as “a Tramp” who falls in love with Virginia Cherrill as “a blind girl” and Harry Myers as “an eccentric millionaire”. A huge success from its premiere, it was ranked No. 11 on the American Film Institute’s 2007 list of the best American films ever made. One of the entries on “City Lights” IMDB trivia page says Albert Einstein attended the premiere with Chaplin and cried at the ending.

San Francisco’s famous City Lights bookstore was founded in 1953 by college professor Peter D. Martin and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti. From its website: “City Lights is one of the few truly great independent bookstores in the United States, a place where booklovers from across the country and around the world come to browse, read, and just soak in the ambiance of alternative culture’s only ‘Literary Landmark’.”

Justin bet $4,514 and finished with $9,314.

Mia bet $6,000 and finished with $12,200.

Ittai bet $5,801 and won the game with $12,401. Ittai Sopher is the new Jeopardy! champ.

That was a weird one – it seemed like a good game, but the numbers don’t support it. Maybe it was how animated Ittai and Mia were.

Someone in the writer’s room needs to be reined in. That “Celery City” and “the Mall City” clue was just unwieldy.

I got FJ. Don’t know why, but I knew it. Only visited SF once, in 1999. The girl I met is now a lawyer. Didn’t see the bookstore there (or, if I did, it didn’t register). And, although I’ve seen more than my share of Chaplin films, didn’t see this one. I’ll take it.

I did not think that all three players would answer the Final correctly, especially with so many triple stumpers today.

  3. Howard says:

I must confess I’ve never seen a Chaplin film. However, I remembered the name of the bookstore in SF when I first visited there in 1972. I believe it was either owned or frequented by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Wasn’t sure all 3 would get FJ, but they did.

I’m mostly giving them a pass because too many of those categories were not in my wheelhouse, notably Slang and Jenna Bush Hager. Although someone said “Detroit” in Double-Vowel Places in Michigan and I think another one said “Minnesota.”

Too bad none of them knew the Louie de Palma reference from that classic sitcom. The chest of drawers wasn’t too tough, and those of us of a certain age remember all to well the first American in space. We watched it on TV in school, and also John Glenn’s later orbital space flight.

Today, only 13 contestants are eligible for the next Tournament of Champions. We still didn’t have a player who won 5 games in a row that they qualify for this tournament.

Our coryat score today for everyone is only $18,800 and $28,800 on 17 triple stumpers. So many triple stumpers in the DJ round caused it to waste time.
