WHAT IS ART NOUVEAU?

From Europeana: “The term Art Nouveau first appeared in the Belgian journal L’Art Moderne in 1884 …. The spirit of the new movement quickly spread around Europe and its name was soon translated in various languages as Jugendstil, Modernismo, Secession, Stile Floreale and similar terms.”

England’s Arts and Crafts Movement in the last half of the 1900s inspired the Arts Nouveau movement in an effort to preserve craftsmanship and beauty at a time when factory mass production was taking over. The goal in the Art Nouveau period was to produce items that were beautiful as well as functional. “The boundaries between fine art and the applied arts became blurred in the fields of furniture design, silverware and architecture, paintings, graphic art, jewellery, fashion and glassware.”

Gautam thought it was Avant-Garde. He lost his $5,399 bet and finished with $1.00.

Hester’s “Art Neuveau” spelling was acceptable. She bet $3,400 and that brought her up to $12,000 even.

Gary came up with Art Deco. He lost his $1,000 bet but won the game with the remaining $20,000. Gary is the first semi-finalist of the 2021 Professors Tournament.

Thanks for posting–better late than never!
Stumpers and FJ very tough for me. I knew the “rocker girls” band movie. Jackie Fox (multi-day champ a couple years ago) was the bass player in that group.

    • VJ says:

Thanks, Howard! Yes, Jackie won 4 games in Season 35 beginning on 12/14/2018, using her real name Jackie Fuchs. She’s left a few comments. This one is on her last game.

From what I read, Jackie was not in that movie because she would not give them the rights to include her.

  2. Lou says:

Glad you are okay VJ and also w really appreciate you posting this. Also Maybe the internet glitches are running amuck around here and usually the computer will tend to be very slow not letting posts go through. I am happy to see Hester getting a wildcard spot and our first semi finalist.

    • VJ says:

Thanks, Lou, I don’t think it was the internet. I don’t think the touchpad on my notebook is working right. I dug out the cordless mouse that works with this notebook. Hopefully, that will take care of the problem.

  3. Corey says:

What time did they finally post this, midnight?

    • VJ says:

No, Corey, I published it this morning when I woke up at 4 a.m. I thought I published it at 3 p.m. yesterday, but unbeknownst to me, it didn’t go through

  4. Richard Corliss says:

    Semifinalists:
    Gary Hollis: $20,000

    Wild Cards:
    Hester Blum: $12,000
    Gautam Hans: $1

  5. VJ says:

I am okay, folks. What happened here is like the other time the recap was so late — I thought it was published (at 3 p.m. yesterday in this case). I really should have checked on that when there were no comments by 7 p.m. but I wasn’t feeling good by then. I thought I would feel better if I went and slept on the couch for a while and I didn’t wake back up till now,

Sorry about that — I will double check from now on.
