WHO IS LINNAEUS?

In 1735 Carl Linnaeus, Swedish botanist and physician, published “Systema Naturae”, in which he classified every species he knew in a highly organized manner. From “Nested Hierarchies, the Order of Nature”: “Linnaeus’ classification was important in many ways, not the least of which was how he classified humans. He named humans Homo sapiens, and placed us in the genus Homo. He also placed orangutans and chimpanzees, the two apes known at the time, in the genus Homo. And he placed Homo in a family, which he dubbed Primates. Primates also included two other genera, simians and lemurs. Although Linnaeus believed that humans were special beings in God’s creation, he slotted our species into his system as if it were any other.”

From 2005: “BI”OLOGY ($1200) When you identify a bird as Cinclus mexicanus, you’re using this system of nomenclature that Linnaeus helped developed

Kevin wrote down Lemarck. He lost his $1,987 bet and finished with $13.

Brit went with Spencer. She lost her $10,250 bet, leaving her with $150.

Karen got it right. She added $2,601 to win the game with $20,801. Her 6-day total is $115,603.

I was hoping Kevin would win. He seemed quirky in a good way, unlike that annoying Austin Rogers.

I remember this fj category in March 2017 and two got it right. I was hoping for a triple solve today. And once again congrats to Karen on her sixth win. Lemarck wasn’t a bad guess. About spencer VJ, could it be Herbert spencer that brit was referring to? Because I don’t think I have heard of him while studying biology during college. That true daily double didn’t pay off for kevin the second time around.

    • VJ says:

Yes, Lou, I think she was referring to Herbert Spencer. He was a contemporary of Darwin, though. It says he coined the expression “survival of the fittest” after reading Darwin’s famous work.

There have been a handful of clues about the expression, like this:

LIFE SCIENCE ($400) Not Darwin, but Herbert Spencer coined this 4-word phrase that sums up natural selection

They don’t expect you to know Spencer’s name — just the phrase.
