WHAT IS “REQUIEM” (IN D MINOR)?

Classical Notes.com has a more complete article than most about how Wolfgang Mozart was commissioned to compose a requiem for Count Walsegg’s wife in 1791 but died on December 5th of that year before it was finished. Mozart’s widow set about getting the piece finished (so she could get paid!) and ultimately settled on Franz Süssmayr, who “wrote out the entire score in his own hand (so as to allay suspicion of multiple authorship) and forged Mozart’s signature (but stupidly dated it 1792!).”

Other composers wrote them, too: CLASSICAL MUSIC (DD $8,000): “Blessed are they that go mourning” is the opening chorus of Brahms’ “German” this

Jackie had “The Jupiter Symphony.” She bet and lost it all.

Carrie thought of “The Magic Flute.” She lost $9,199 and finished with $1.00.

Andrew came up with “The Marriage of Figaro.” He lost $4,200 but won the game with the remaining $21,000. Andrew Kung is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Hey, everyone – Jackie here. Andrew was really smart and really fast on that signalling device. I’d have been behind him going into FJ no matter what. But I’d like to think that on any other day I’d have been within 50% and would have been able to focus on the clue in what was my dream category, the one I’d have chosen out of a 1,000 options. I was so brain-dead all I could focus on was the word “last,” and so answered with Mozart’s last symphony rather than his last work. Ah well… I’m still really happy with how I did and with the friends I made on the show. Jeopardy contestants really are rather wonderful people.

    • VJ says:

Hi there, Jackie. So nice of you to stop by. Congrats on your streak and really sorry that you were thrown off in that way. I totally get what you’re saying about that FJ!

There was the Winfield Scott clue the other day too 😀 I KNOW THAT!! I mean, I know it, too. The 19th century is kinda my thing and I have studied those guys, where they went to school, who they fought with and against, etc etc etc and I was sitting there with my mouth hanging open. LOL!!

All the chat stories today were great and I really got a kick out of the retired KGB agent giving you the business. It was cute when Alex asked Andrew to give him some wise advice because he is descended from Confucius, and he said “The answers to life questions often come in the form of a question.”

Congrats again. We all hope to see you again in the ToC.

      Jackie,
Did you pass the online test in June 2017 or March 2018 in order to get on the show? Just curious as to the time frame between testing, audition, and actual show.

  2. John Christian Ambion says:

Jackie’s unpredictable run came to a halt thanks to Andrew “who could not be caught” Kung. I hope he loses tomorrow.

    • John B./I. says:

      @JCA
Actually – since VJ is not feeling too hot after the dentist – let me tell you that Jackie did fall ill during the taping, just before the interviews and that affected the rest of her game. Really bad, but what can you do? She might have been in the lead if not for that unfortunate incident and let’s leave it at that. No need to go into somebody’s medical “chart”.

  3. Lou says:

Well, all I can say is that Jackie had a great run this week with four wins though We will have to see what Andrew brings to the table next week. They were close since Jackie did mention she liked classical music . Furthermore we only have one three time winner left. Mozart also had k545 and toy symphony along with the Turkish March which I am sure VJ and John you guys are familiar with? Andrew was pretty quick on the buzzer today so I hope he makes a sweep before the New year begins

    • John B./I. says:

We still have tomorrow and as I said, Jackie was not quite up to par today. VJ will explain, I’m sure.

      • John Christian Ambion says:

@Lou I hope he loses. He’s playing like Arthur Chu, quick on the buzzer, risked a lot, he’s too hungry for a spot in the ToC.

  4. John B./I. says:

    PPS
If Jackie saw or heard “symphony”, she would have been right. The Jupiter Symphony # 41, C major, was Mozart’s last symphony, completed 3 years before his death.

  5. Dal Higbee says:

Man, I was hoping we would finally have a 5-time female champion.

    • William Weyser says:

And I was also hoping that we would finally have our 1st player of 2018 to sweep a week. Oh well, next week is our last chance for that to actually happen. If it doesn’t work out next week, there is always a chance for someone to sweep a week in 2019.

      • VJ says:

Yes, there’s going to be a Teachers Tournament in May 2019 so there’s plenty of time for some more 5x and up winners.

Jackie posted on Reddit that she became ill during this game, which of course affected her gameplay but she bravely finished the game.

P.S. I went to the dentist today so I’m not feeling so hot myself. So toodles till tomorrow.

  6. John B./I. says:

Well, here we go again. Mozart did not only compose operas, symphonies etc. REQUIEM is a mass for the dead and comes from the Latin noun “requies”, it is the accusative, singular = rest, repose, like “lying in repose”, e.g. the person is dead. Mozart wrote quite a few ecclesiastical pieces of music, but they are of course not as well known as his operas or “A little Night Music” etc.
So Jackie is not safe with 4 wins, if 3 players overtake her she is out.She is now at #12 overall and there are still two 4 game winners ahead of her. Alex Schmidt and Dave Leffler. If the ToC is held after the summer break……
CONGRATULATIONS to Andrew, who reset the ToC clock yet again, this time after 4 wins by Jackie.
Requiem is btw not just known in the Catholic Church but also Eastern Orthodox, even Methodist. It’s an “overall” expression, the only way to differentiate it exactly is to name the composer and scale, like here: Requiem in D minor by W.A. Mozart. Requiems have been written by many composers (Verdi, Bruckner,Dvorak etc).
