Final Jeopardy: Europe (12-6-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/6/2019) in the category “Europe” was:

A tourism website for this country noted its colorful history “filled with barbarians”, royalty “& even a movie star”

2x champ Jennifer Quail, a wine-tasting consultant from Dowagiac, MI, has now won $74,800. In Game 3, she is up against: Randy Hassell Jr, a software engineer from Virginia Beach, VA; and Katie Kunamneni, a physician from Holmdel, NJ.

Round 1 Categories: Mugshots – Retired Numbers in Sports – Clothing – Lakes & Rivers – According to Black’s Law Dictionary – Remember the “L_M_O”

Katie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Sports” under the $600 clue, with one clue left after it. She was in second place with $4,000, $6,600 less than Jennifer’s lead. She bet $3,000 and guessed the number one. That was WRONG.

The Seattle Seahawks retired this number to honor the extra players, the fans. show

Jennifer finished in the lead with $10,600. Katie was second with $2,000 and Randy was last with $1,000.

Round 2 Categories: Back in the 20th Century – Adjectives – The Rest of the Title, Please – Women! – Old Books – It’s Not Rocket Science

Randy found the first Daily Double in “20th Century” under the $800 clue on the 5th pick. He was in third place with $600 now, $9,600 less than Jennifer’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

In 1954, Russian words meaning “Committee for State Security” got shortened to these 3 letters for an agency. show

Jennifer found the last Daily Double in “Adjectives” under the $1,600 clue on the 19th pick. In the lead with $18,600, she had $12,000 more than Randy in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

It’s from the Latin for “hammer” & refers to metal that can be hammered into a new shape. show

Jennifer finished in the lead with a runaway $22,000. Katie was next with $6,400 and Randy was in third place with $4,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MONACO?

Everywhere I look online that has something similar to the phrasing in the clue either says that “Monaco has a colorful and fascinating history filled with barbarians, kings and even a movie star”, or it says “barbarians, pirates, kings.” Of course, the principality of Monaco is famous for the 1956 marriage of American movie star Grace Kelly to its Prince Rainier III. Their son, Albert II, is the country’s ruling monarch today. However, the clue didn’t say the movie star was a royal so that made it difficult since other European countries have barbarians, royalty and a famous movie star in their history, too.

Randy got it right. He added $1,900 to finish with $6,500.

Katie thought it was Germany and agreed with Alex when he said she was thinking of Marlena Dietrich. She lost her $2,801 bet and finished with $3,599.

Jennifer also had Germany. She lost $6,500 but won the game with the remaining $15,500. Her 3-day total is $90,300.

Final Jeopardy (12/6/2019) Jennifer Quail, Randy Hassell Jr, Katie Kunamneni

I missed the show, so I appreciate this excellent recap on such days.
If Katie had $400, how did she wager $3K on the first DD?
I’m somewhat surprised that only one player surmised that Grace Kelly became Princess Grace of Monaco. Perhaps my advanced age made it easier for me.

@Howard, my numbers were off there — she had $4,000 and Jennifer’s score was actually $10,600 at that point. Thanks for the heads up. It’s fixed now.

Well a win is a win. Even if Jennifer didn’t get this, I still think she has a shot at the 100K. This is our fourth lady with a big 90K win since Emma Boettcher. Although I commend Randy on getting final right, he couldn’t get much rhythm going. Do you think we might see Jennifer break this three game curse VJ?

    • VJ says:

Lou, I really don’t think much about how many games the players will win. As we saw yesterday, it depends on who Jennifer has to contend with whether she will win her 4th game, right?

I was kinda rushing today because I had to go out for a little while but I just noticed that the FJ clue (as shown on the screen in the game) did not have quotes around the word royalty, whereas on Jeopardy’s Clue of the Day page, it was written as one whole quote, so I fixed that.

When I saw the clue this morning, I just thought of Princess Grace, the first movie star royal that would come to my mind and I stopped right there. In retrospect, I could see how the the clue might point to other countries, particularly after klm pointed out that barbarians might lead one to think of Conan.
