Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/19/2018) in the category “Poets’ Birthplaces” was:

5 Cwmdonkin Drive was the address of the family home where he was born in 1914

3x champ Jackie Fuchs, an attorney and writer from Los Angeles, CA, is up to $58,689 now. In Game 4, her challengers are: Eric Doctor, a graphic designer teacher from Brooklyn, NY; and Trisha Estaquio, a biomedical engineer from Silver Springs, MD.

Round 1 Categories: Tea & Sympathy – Do the Math – Higher Education – Words That Should Rhyme – Challenged & Banned Books – The Fab Four

Trisha found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Higher Education” under the $800 clue, with 10 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $3,600, $3,200 more than Jackie in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Trisha finished in the lead with $6,600. Jackie was second with $2,400 and Eric was last with negative $800.

Trisha found the first Daily Double in “‘In’ the End” under the $1,200 clue on the 8th pick. She was in the lead with $9,000 now, $4,600 more than Jackie in second place. She bet $2,000 and could only come up with half of it so she was WRONG.

Both of the words in this alliterative term for a container of sale items end with “in” show

Eric found the last Daily Double in “Lakes” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues left after it. In third place with $1,200, he had $13,200 less than Jackie’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and said Okefenokee. That was WRONG.

Jackie finished in the lead with $14,400. Trisha was next with $13,400 and Eric was in third place with $4,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS DYLAN THOMAS?

From the Dylan Thomas Birthplace website: “Dylan was born in the front bedroom of the house in 1914 and continued to live at Number 5 until his parents moved out in 1937 of his ‘…Glamorgan villa…’ overlooking the ‘…long and splendid curving shore…’ of Swansea Bay.” You can see the front bedroom where he was born and even book an overnight stay on the site.

Today in “The Fab Four”, there was a clue about who was not ON THE COVER OF SGT. PEPPER. Here’s one from 2003 on two who were: ($400) Bob Dylan appears as does this poet from whom he may have taken his stage name

Trisha got it right. Her $13,399 bet brought her up to $26,799.

Jackie got it, too. She bet $14,000 and won the game with $28,400. Her 4-day total is $87,089.

I hope Jackie becomes a five-day champion tomorrow night. We haven’t had a five-time female champion in quite a while!

  2. Micki says:

Fuchs definitely left the Plural S off of Strawberry Fields. I don’t think the game applies the rules fairly across the board.

    • rhonda says:

Yes, I could have sworn that she left the S off, the second time, too, when she added Forever. I agree with you about applying the rules fairly.

      • VJ says:

She didn’t repeat Strawberry Fields when she added Forever. I just listened to it with my eyes closed and I heard the plural Fields.

        • rhonda says:

Oh, okay, VJ, such an unreliable witness I am!

        • rhonda says:

But should she be allowed to correct it to “fields” after Alex said something?

        • VJ says:

According to the rules I have read and heard about (and I’m pretty sure Jeopardy! champ, Kevin S. said it was correct on here somewhere), the players are allowed to correct their answer as long as they do it before Alex rules them incorrect.

So what happened on the Fab Four clue was Jackie said “Strawberry Fields” when the clue was asking for the song title. Then there was the proverbial pregnant pause and she realized more was needed and added “Forever.” imo, this is no big deal, Alex could have said “Be more specific.”

However, on the $1,000 clue in Higher Education (Its Tempe campus has one of the largest undergraduate populations in the United States), Eric said “Arizona” and Alex jumped right on that with “No.” Jackie then got “Arizona State.” That was the bigger deal from my pov.

          Conclusion: Whatever

        • rhonda says:

Got it, VJ. I thought that was odd with the Arizona answer as well.

  3. Albert says:

Am I the only person who noticed that Jackie may have said, “Strawberry Field”, without adding the (s) ? Am I correct or am I mistaken?

Also, for “Long”, why weren’t the names of Huey or Earl asked for by Trebek?

Maybe I’m being pedantic, but I think the rules should be applied consistently.

  4. Norma says:

How did she win without clarifying which Thomas! Edward Thomas was a famous Welsh poet, too. Assuming she meant Dylan Thomas was presumptuous and unfair to Trisha who clearly identified the poet. There’s no indication she knew birthdate of either poet.

    • John B./I. says:

Edward Thomas was English, not Welsh. And the address clearly was Welsh (celtic).
There was only one Welsh poet named Thomas and that was Dylan. If you want to stretch it then they maybe gave her the benefit of the doubt, but Edward was not born at the address in the clue. (Lambeth, formerly Surrey, is now part of Greater London.)

  5. John B./I. says:

Theoretically I think yes. At the same time I am pretty sure that J will not have the next ToC before all 4 game winners are gone. Just my opinion. Could take a while though.

  6. John B./I. says:

Congrats to Jackie ! Dave Mattingly is out, last on the list is now Scott. Jackie still has 2 four game winners ahead of her: Alex Schmidt and Dave (Leffler). To be on the safe side, she will probably a 5th win. Close game again, Jackie JUST finished in the lead again. Must have some Irish roots…🍀

    • John Christian Ambion says:

And she must win one of the two remaining games for the week before Christmas. Dave Mattingly is out now in the ToC contention.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

    And Dave Mattingly is out.

  8. Lou says:

Well, let me start off by saying congratulations to jackie on winning game 4 and to Trisha to getting this right. It’s been forever since we last had Dylan Thomas on FJ. Vj you remember there was another author that also died by suicide in another game that no one got in final right? Eric was pretty close though but he should have gone south a bit more for Okeecheebee river. The okefenokee swamp is in Goergia. Also i can see that Jackie could be the next Amy Fine if she wins game 5 tomorrow don’t you agree VJ and John?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, there were a couple of FJs back in January 2018, one about Van Gogh and one about Virginia Woolf (though not about the suicides). Dylan Thomas did not commit suicide far as I know.

      • John B./I. says:

Officially he died from respiratory problems and emphysema (hundreds of NY residents died at that time, heavy smog). That he was drinking heavily did probably not help either. Too young….

  9. Richard Corliss says:

That wrong answer on that daily double in Double Jeopardy made Alex penalize Trisha.
