Final Jeopardy: The Americas (10-8-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/8/2020) in the category “The Americas” was:

Home to more than 20 million people & 3 different official languages, this island is about 600 miles from the continental U.S.

3x champ, Garrett Marcotte, a software engineer from Santa Monica, CA has now won $63,700. In Game 4, he goes up against: Kevin Walsh, a story analyst originally from Williamstown, NJ; and Amy Judd Lieberman, an attorney originally from Quakertown, PA.

Round 1 Categories: The $1 Bill – Beer / Me! – Word Origins – Sports Awards – 3 Things About the President – Nursery Rhymes

Garrett found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “3 Things about the President” under the $800 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,400, $200 less than Kevin’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Kevin finished in the lead with a runaway $15,600. Amy was next with $7,600 and Garrett was in third place with $7,000. Both board were completed.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS HISPANIOLA?

The island of Hispaniola is split between the Dominican Republic (official language: Spanish), and Haiti (official languages: French and Haitian Creole). In Spanish, the island is called La Española and in the two languages of Haiti, it’s spelled the same as in English. As Forvo will show you, you just don’t pronounce the “H” in French.

The above video shows the island’s history of changing hands and its multitude of leaders.

Garrett got it right. He bet $1,000 and finished with $8,000.

Amy got it, too, with “Hispañola.” She bet $7,600 and finished with $15,200.

Kevin thought it was Bermuda. (English is the only official language and it’s not quite as crowded there.) He lost a measly $300 and won the game with the remaining $15,300. Kevin Walsh is the new Jeopardy! champ.

    10/8/20 fine jeopardy answer..

If you said Haiti instead of Hispaniola would your answer be considered right also???

  2. Mimi says:

Being a semi-educated US citizen, I honestly thought Hispaniola was part of the Caribbean not the Americas. I love that I always learn something watching Jeopardy… 🙂

Oh! He beat her by $100.

Speaking of that Daily double on The world is not enough. Ringworld had two games, One was Revenge of the Patriarch and the other was Return to Ringworld based on the books by Larry Niven, I am sure those would have given Garrett that hint. Discworld is actually by Terry Pratchett which has characters like Rincewind and Wendell and so forth. VJ have you played Discworld or Ringworld? They are the oldest games from the early to late 90s.

@Rhonda, I thought about our hairdo remarks from the other day when Amy’s hairstyle reminded me of Bonnie from Billlions today. Otherwise, they don’t look alike.

    • rhonda says:

That’s funny, VJ. I couldn’t stand Bonnie from Billions!

      • VJ says:

Did you see yet that it got renewed for a Season 6? Right after they finish Season 5 next year. Looks like there’ll be a lot of Crazy Chuck and Bonkers Bobby, unless they split up Season 6, too!

      • rhonda says:

I did see that, that was pretty surprising. I haven’t even gotten around to watching the partial season 5 episodes, not sure if I ever will.

  6. Bob Dagenais says:

There was an error in the 3 things about the presidents category. Response was “Samuel” (Adams). Should have been John.

    • JP says:

It looks like you’ve confused two categories. The clue with Samuel Adams as the correct response was in the category “Beer/Me”, and the clue asked for a governor of Massachusetts in the 1790s.

The “3 Things About The President” did not have any clues references to either Adams.
