WHAT IS THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA?

Construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began on August 9, 1173. Within 5 years, they found that the foundation was sinking. For the following two centuries, work on the Tower was halted and resumed periodically until its completion in 1372. Two attempts to improve the Tower in the 1830s and 1930s failed and the Tower began to lean more and more. A 10-year project that began in 1990 did not straighten the Tower but eliminated the threat of a possible collapse for 2 more centuries. “Pisa just wanted the Tower to be safe and not straightened completely, because who the hell would visit Pisa otherwise?” explains the detailed account on the “Mistakes Were Made” blog.

I’d love to follow Phillip Howard on IG or Twitter. Does anyone know what it his handle? Thank you! He is so smart, and a Navy officer. I grew up with Naval officers in my family 🙂

  2. Howard says:

Phillip is very likable. Handsome, smart, pleasant, Naval officer. But man, he would have blown it if he had missed Final Jeopardy. Another few hundred $$ wagered on the last DD, and he wins in a runaway. He had nothing to lose by betting more than he did.

    • VJ says:

Back in 2014, on one game, I was pondering why someone would bet less than the face amount of the DD. The player who did it said he wasn’t good at math and there is a big difference between figuring out your FJ bet and making a DD bet on the spot.

For 3 times this week, J! was preempted in my area—on Tuesday for that infantile argument, then on Wednesday and tonight, for sports (some game).

  4. Jeff says:

I am glad Phillip got final right and won the game. He would have felt awful if he had lost and then realized that if he had bet only 601 dollars more on the last clue and daily double it would have been a runaway.

  5. Jacob Ska says:

What a fantastic game to watch! All daily doubles were correct, no clues left on the board, and all contestants got fj correct. This was a great way to end the week.

  6. VJ says:

When I saw the Russian Opera category on J!6 this morning, I decided to answer Rimsky-Korsakov to all the clues. lol. I really didn’t because they were easier than I thought but it was funny that he turned up *in* a clue instead of as a correct response.

    Coincidence Corner:
–Rhonda bringing up the movie Psycho in this morning’s Spoiler Talk conversation
–Sisters Dakota and Elle were in a clue on the Weakest Link on Tuesday . They just showed a picture of them and only asked for their last name, too

  7. JP says:

I had no idea for the “Last Words” Daily Double. I never associated the response with mythology, and so was distracted from the possibly obvious answer in only going by the first half of the clue.

  8. Lou says:

Well we got a triple solve after a few weeks of lone solves and triple stumpers. Congrats to Phillip on winning again and to all the players getting the daily doubles. We may see Phillip run a streak going into next week.
