Final Jeopardy: Constitutional Amendments (1-3-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/3/2020) in the category “Constitutional Amendments” was:

Until a 1913 amendment allowed this, 1/3 of U.S. Government revenue came from liquor

6x champ Karen Farrell, a political consultant from Woodbridge, VA, went over the $100K mark yesterday and has now won $115,603. In Game 7, she takes on these two players: Mat Gargano, a web developer from Staten Island, NY; and Shayna O’Neill, a stage manager from Columbia, MD.

Round 1 Categories: Calendars – I’m So There for It! – “After” – The Moth – Armchair Expert – Podcasts

Mat found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Moth” under the $1,000 clue on the 12th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,600 and had $2,800 more than Karen in second place when he found it. Before he made his bet, Karen gained $1,600 on a reversal (see below) so Mat only had a $1,200 lead. He bet $1,000 and took a shot with larvae. That was WRONG.

Karen finished in the lead with $7,200. Mat was second with $4,600 and Shayna was last with $800.

Round 2 Categories: It’s a Hand! It’s Michigan! – Criminal Slang – Rock Bands – My Profession’s in the Book Title – Protests – Sliding Into Your CMs

Shayna found the first Daily Double in “Criminal Slang” under the $1,200 clue on the very first pick. The scores were the same as above. She bet the $2,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

Fans of “Law & Order” know this adjective meaning previous can be a noun meaning a previous arrest or conviction. show

5 clues later, Karen found the last Daily Double in “Rock Bands” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $8,000, she had $3,400 more than Mat in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

Karen finished in the lead with a runaway $22,600. Mat was next with $7,800 and Shayna was in third place with $2,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS INCOME TAX?

From Investopedia: “The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1913 and allows Congress to levy a tax on income from any source without apportioning it among the states and without regard to the census.” The article also explains that income taxes were imposed prior to that date to fund the Civil War but “the law was allowed to expire in 1872.” Revenue was mostly raised from excise taxes and tariffs before 1913.

From 2006: GOIN’ MONACO A MONACO ($400) Rich foreigners like to make Monaco home as it doesn’t have this, begun in the U.S. in 1913 via the 16th Amendment

Shayna thought it was property tax. She didn’t bet anything so she stayed at $2,000.

Mat got it right. His $200 bet brought him up $8,000.

Karen got it, too. She bet $1,600 and won the game with $24,200. Her 7-day total is $139,803.

Final Jeopardy (1/3/2020) Karen Farrell, Mat Gargano, Shayna O'Neill

Reversal: “AFTER” ($800) I “sense” you know it’s the remaining sensation about an experience, often a bad one – Karen’s “after effects” was rejected and Mat got it with “aftertaste.” The judges later gave a thumbs up to Karen’s response.

3 triple stumpers from MY PROFESSION’S IN THE BOOK TITLE:

($1600) Natty Bumppo (this one OR the other one)

($2000) George Smiley

@albert LOL. We got vouchers for the Sony Pictures Studios cafeteria. 🎉🎉

  2. Albert says:

Would ‘passive resistance’ be accepted in addition to ‘civil disobedience?

    • Howard says:

Exactly the answer I’d have given. I think it was acceptable, unless the clue as written would have negated that.

  3. Dal Higbee says:

I think Jennifer Quail cursed the contestants on the Michigan category today.

  4. Lou says:

Shayna couldn’t get anything going, but still Karen has swept up the week with seven wins, it’s similar to what Kyle Jones, Ryan Fenster, and Josh Hill did during their run. And I thought Matt could be our next champion to build up on his win since I saw an article telling us he memorized over 35000 questions.

I am glad that reversal helped Karen. By the way VJ when you first started filing income tax, what obstacles or hurdles did you overcome? I know stress is one of them. I heard that TurboTax saves people a lot of time writing things on paper.

    • VJ says:

Well, that’s interesting about the 35,000 questions… I wonder if any of them showed up for him today and he just got outbuzzed.

I was about 18 when I filed my first income tax return, Lou. My father showed me how to do it and I got a little refund. It really wasn’t a big deal.
