Final Jeopardy: Government Programs (11-27-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/27/2013), in the category “Government Programs” was:

Over 8,000 people have been saved from harm by this program authorized in a 1970 law, but we’re not allowed to name any.

Mike Nickel became the Jeopardy! champ yesterday with an excellent payday of $29,210. Today he is competing against these two players: John Kyle Grady, originally from Hyde Park, MA; and Shanna Lafferty, from Boyertown, PA.

Shanna found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Far Southern Novels.” She was in third place with $1,400, $5,200 behind Mike’s lead. She bet $1,000 and thought it was Perry. That was WRONG.

John finished in the lead with $16,000. Shanna was next with $14,400 and Mike was in third place with $12,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right (you may not agree).

WHAT IS THE WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM?

The actual name of the program is “The Witness Security Program” or “WITSEC,” although it is commonly known as the Witness Protection Program. According to its FAQs, “More than 8,500 witnesses and 9,900 of their authorized family members have participated in the program since it began in 1971.” (U.S. Marshall’s Service Fact Sheet)

Mike wrote down the “Witness Relocation Program.” That was not acceptable so he lost his $11,500 bet, leaving him with $50.

Shanna thought it was the CIA. She didn’t bet a nickel though so she finished with $14,400.

John’s answer was accepted even though he seems to have left out the ‘e’ in Protection. He bet $12,801 so he ended up with $28,801 and we have another new champ.

SHanna would have won on a triple stumper, so her wagering wasn’t as inoptimal as MIke’s from third place.
