Beat Shazam Recap: June 17, 2019

In Beat Shazam’s third season, the 5th episode features fathers and daughters in a salute to Father’s Day. Host Jamie Foxx and his deejay daughter, Corinne, are about to entertain us with another great hour of the biggest hit songs (“from the Jackson 5 to Maroon 5”).

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Frank & Christina, from Long Island in the Empire State (NY)
  • Daryl & Asha, from southern California (CA)
  • Larry & Shannon, from Fort Worth in the Lone Star State (TX)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. GIRL GROUPS: “Wannabe” (The Spice Girls)
NY $2000 CA $0 TX $0
Everyone got it but the fastest in the land was Team NY at 1.19
2. ’70s: “More Than a Feeling” (Boston)
NY $2000 CA $2000 TX $2000
Once again, everyone was on it. CA & TX tied for top speed at 1.61, and that resulted in a 3-way tie
3. MADE IN THE U.K.: “Stay with Me” (Sam Smith)
NY $2000 CA $2000 TX $4000
Everybody got this one, too but only TX got it in under 2 seconds.
4. PROUD PAPAS: “Isn’t She Lovely” (Stevie Wonder)
NY $2000 CA $4000 TX $4000
This panel is incredible! They all got it, but CA came in at 1.62
5. FAST TRACK – SEXY SONGS: “Slow Motion” (Juvenile)
NY $2000 CA $8000 TX $4000
This was between CA and TX and the big money went to CA, 2.35 vs. 2.44

So that last one gave Daryl & Asha (CA) a $4,000 lead over Larry & Shannon (TX). NY has some catching up to do in the next round or it’s curtains!

Round 2: That’s My Jam! There was only one vote for Cover Songs, so this round’s all about MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Footloose” (Kenny Loggins)
NY $2000 CA $8000 TX $7000
Only CA got the theme song of “Footloose”
2. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” (Justin Timberlake)
NY $2000 CA $8000 TX $10,000
Everyone knows this song from “Trolls” but not everyone knows the title. TX and NY knew it but TX knew it fastest: 2.10 vs. 2.76
3. “Straight Outta Compton” (N.W.A.)
NY $2000 CA $11,000 TX $10,000
This song from the movie of the same name was between CA and TX, but this time CA brought the lightning reflex: 1.49 vs. 2.03
4. FAST TRACK: “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” (Simple Minds)
NY $2,000 CA $11,000 TX $13,000
Team TX won this tune from “The Breakfast Club” soundtrack. They came in at 1.98 while the other teams tied at 2.18.

That was the end of the line for Frank & Christina (NY). Larry & Shannon (TX) have a $2,000 lead over Daryl & Asha (NY) as we head into Round 3, where there’s serious money to be made.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice: Hip Hop
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Rapper’s Delight” (Sugarhill Gang)
CA $11,000 TX $21,000
Wow, that was close! CA at 1.82 but TX came in at 1.72!
2. “Fancy” (Iggy Azalea Ft. Charli XCX)
CA $11,000 TX $26,000
TX had the only right answer. CA’s answer was Problem
3. “Insane in the Brain” (Cypress Hill)
CA $16,000 TX $26,000
CA was the only one to get it right this time. TX had Jump Around
4. FAST TRACK: “Salt Shaker” (Ying Yang Twins ft. Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz)
CA $26,000 TX $26,000
CA had it and TX went astray with Right Thurr.

Can you believe it? Daryl & Asha (CA) came all the way up to tie with Larry and Shannon (TX) on those last two songs. That was some fine playing and, as Jamie likes to say, we’ve got a barn burner. Now the players have to take on “Without Words.” It’s tough but it pays well!

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” (Rod Stewart)
CA $26,000 TX $36,000
That one went to TX with the only correct response
2. “Iris” (Goo Goo Dolls)
CA $26,000 TX $36,000
Nobody got it. CA went for “Black Balloon” and TX had “Slide”
3. “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (Marvin Gaye)
CA $36,000 TX $36,000
The pendulum swings back to CA (only right answer) and we’ve got a tie again!
4. FAST TRACK: “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” (Bachman-Turner Overdrive)
CA $36,000 TX $56,000
It’s a regular see-saw. TX got it right. CA went with “Takin’ Care of Business.”

Daryl & Asha (CA) are taking home half their bank– $18,000. Larry & Shannon (TX) get the chance to scoop up another $125,000 and, possibly, a million smackeroos.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Classic Rock: “The Boys Are Back in Town” (Thin Lizzy) – Somehow, Shannon popped out with “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” but we had already seen it in the last round!
2. Reggae: “Boombastic” (Shaggy) – Shannon went with the Mr. Lover lyric so that was no dough.
3. U2: “Vertigo” Shannon buzzed in and had one of those sad moments: she drew a blank!
4. The ’60s: “The Letter” (The Box Tops) – Larry got them some money! – $81,000
5. Breakup Songs: “When I Was Your Man” (Bruno Mars) – Shannon redeemed herself and her papa could not have been prouder. They began the round with $56,000 and finished with $106,000.

Larry & Shannon have the opportunity to double their money now by taking on one last song. If they know that song before Shazam, they will win $212,000. If they miss it, “however”, their winnings will drop all the way down to $53,000. To help them make the decision, Jamie gave them the category: “Disco.” As it turned out, they made a decision in advance to take a shot at the last song in any other category BUT “Disco” so they chose to keep what they had. They played the last song for fun and Shannon knew “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees immediately. Geez! We know that’s worse than blanking out when the stakes are this high, but you just can’t know you’ll know it in advance.

Larry & Shannon have no reason to regret the decision they made but they have 106,000 reasons to celebrate their appearance on Beat Shazam! A big “Congrats, y’all” from Houston with many best wishes for the future.
