Beat Shazam Recap: June 5, 2018

The second episode of Beat Shazam’s Season 2 featured Jamie Foxx as the “world-renowned NBA analyst, Cleveland A. Smith, brother of Stephen A. Smith.” This was a tribute to the contestants, who are basketball superfans. Jamie’s deejay and daughter, Corinne, brought a whistle along tonight in case she sees any dad dance moves she doesn’t like.

The teams were introduced by DJ Irie, announcer for the Miami Heat:

Lakers: Vanessa & Anthony: a daughter & father team
GSW: Sam & Rynell: Golden State Warrior lovers
Cavs: Brian & Tom for the Cleveland Cavaliers

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Before the game began, special guest Kareem Abdul Jabbar put in an appearance, to wild applause. He brought an autographed copy of his new book “Becoming Kareem” as a gift for Jamie and joined Corinne to help with deejay duties in the first round.

Sam & Rynell are going on to the next round to try to beat Shazam. Vanessa & Anthony get to take home half their bank: $24,000.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at the million if they get all 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Duets: “Islands in the Stream” (Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton) – Go Rynell! $77,000
2. ’70s: “Jungle Love” (Steve Miller Band)- Sam buzzed in but he had one of those $25K blankouts. This one also cost the shot at the million.
3. Hip Hop: “Run It” (Chris Brown) – Another $25K coming their way. $102,000
4. Alt Rock: “3 AM” (Matchbox 30) – Another win: $127,000
5. Soul: “Stand by Me” (Ben E. King) – And they had it on the third word (mountains). They began the round with $52,000 and finished with $152,000. Dang!

Sam & Rynell can now double their money to $304,000 by taking on and beating Shazam on one last song, or they can take their $152,000 and head on home. If they lose to Shazam, they lose half and would be left with $76,000. Before they have to decide, they are told the category: Pop. As tempting as $304,000 was, Sam & Rynell decided “we gotta hold on to what we got.” Rynell did not want to play the song for kicks, but Jamie said he had to. The song was “The Heart Wants What It Wants” by Selena Gomez but Rynell thought it was “The Heart Knows What It Wants.”

So all’s well that ends well. Sam and Rynell get $76,000 each instead of having to split that amount. We see some really good Golden State Warrior seats in their future.
