Beat Shazam Recap: May 25, 2017

Beat Shazam is a new hour-long musical game show that debuted on FOX on 5/25/2017 with host Jamie Foxx. You may recall that Jamie won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Ray Charles in “Ray” (2004). We do believe that, in and of itself, makes him eminently qualified to be the host or even a judge on any music show. October Gonzalez was on hand to start the music whenever Jamie says “hit it.” October is an actress who is married to actor and former NFL player, Tony Gonzalez. October is her real name (we looked it up!)

Shazam is a music app that can identify any song within mere seconds. In this game, you have to work your way up to the last round. If you make it there, you get a chance to play against Shazam for $1,000,000.

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING.
The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

The game starts with 3 teams of 2 people facing off to be the first to pick the right title of a song. They are shown the category and 4 multiple choices, which often include misleads. They don’t really have team names so we gave them one anyhow

Team Billings: Russell & Matt, a father and son from Montana
Team Tutu: Chicky & Jazz, 2 sisters from Nashville, TN, tutu company owners, wearing tutus
Team I-Chi: Ian & Chin, 2 music trivia buffs, who regularly play against each other

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at the million if they get all 5 right. There are no more multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Disco: “Hot Stuff” (Donna Summer) $98,000
2. 2010s: “Drive By” (Train) – They missed it – the million prize is now off the table.
3. Love Songs: “Lovin’ You” (Minnie Riperton) $123,000
4. Britney Spears: “Toxic” $148,000
Russell is like a song encyclopedia. “How ’bout the old man?” Matt exclaimed.
5. Classic Rock: “Runnin’ Down a Dream” (Tom Petty) $173,000
Final Category: Pop. Russell and Matt must decide if they want to take $173,000 back to the crib. If they beat Shazam, they will double their money to $346,000. If Shazam beats them, they will go home with $86,500. Only one of them can play the round. While the audience chanted “Beat Shazam,” they decide to “take the money and run” because the category was too broad for their tastes.

“Just for the fun of it,” they got to take a shot at the last song and Russell knew “Smooth Operator” (Sade) BEFORE Shazam. He’ll never be able to hear that song the same way again! That was a truly impressive performance.
