Beat Shazam Recap: September 11, 2018

This is the penultimate episode of Beat Shazam’s Season 2. That’s right. Just one more show after this week (9/11/2018). As always, Jamie Foxx opened this one. Then his DJ daughter, Corinne, introduced this week’s contestants are:

  • MA: Aericka & Nadia, cowgirls and barrel racers from Billerica
  • CT: Rich & Michael, from Danbury, who have been together for 20 years, and married for 7. They met on AOL.
  • MI: Chelsie & Staci, from Sterling Heights, who do a podcast about bad dates

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. FUNK: “Jungle Boogie” (Kool & The Gang)
MA $0 CT $2000 MI $0
Rich & Michael had the only right response, in which case, timing is irrelevant
2. ELECTROPOP: “On My Mind” (Ellie Goulding)
MA $0 CT $2000 MI $0
No one got it!
3. GLAM ROCK: “Bennie and the Jets” (Elton John)
MA $2000 CT $2000 MI $0
Aericka & Nadia beat the ladies from MI (2.31 to 2.74)
4. HIP-HOP: “Get It Shawty” (Lloyd)
MA $2000 CT $4000 MI $0
Rich & Michael nailed it at 2.85 to MA’s 4.03
5. ’60s: “Piece of My Heart” (Big Brother & The Holding Company)
MA $2000 CT $4000 MI $2000
Chelsie & Stacie got on the board with a 2.08 solve
6. DANCE CRAZES: “Walk Like an Egyptian” (The Bangles)
MA $2000 CT $6000 MI $2000
Everyone got it again but CT was fastest at 1.19
FAST TRACK: DEMI LOVATO: “Sorry Not Sorry”
MA $2000 CT $6000 MI $6000
All teams got it in under 2 seconds but Chelsie & Staci were fastest at 1.40

We ended the Shazam Shuffle with Team CT & Team MI tied at $6,000. At $2,000, Team MA had some catching up to do.

Round 2: Love Songs
The other choice, Breakup Songs, only got 1 vote.
First 4: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000
1. “Love Me Harder” (Ariana Grande & The Weeknd)
MA $5000 CT $6000 MI $6000
Aericka & Nadia nailed it at 2.50 to CT’s 3.10.
2. “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything” (Barry White)
MA $5000 CT $9000 MI $6000
Rich & Michael were the only ones right
3. “Love Song” (The Cure)
MA $8000 CT $9,000 MI $6000
The ladies were all right but Aerica & Nadia were speed demons at 1.52
4. “Amazed” (Lonestar)
MA $8000 CT $12,000 MI $6000
All were right. Rich & Michael were the only ones under 2 seconds
FAST TRACK: “LoveGame” (Lady Gaga)
MA $8000 CT $18,000 MI $6000
Rich & Michael, forged into a big lead with that double money

So it was back to the Wolverine State for Chelsie & Staci. Sorry to see you go, ladies. We liked Staci’s story about the guy who took her on a date to a funeral parlor. We just wondered why, if you gals do a podcast on bad dates, you didn’t vote for Breakup Songs?

Round 3: MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS
Only one person from each remaining team could play this round. That was Team MA’s Nadia vs. Team CT’s Rich
First 4: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Danger Zone” (Kenny Loggins – “Top Gun”)
MA $8000 CT $23,000
At 1.74, Rich beat Nadia’s 1.99
2. “My Heart Will Go On” (Celine Dion – “Titanic”)
MA $8,000 CT $28,000
Rich came in at 1.91 this time to Nadia’s 2.69
3. “Glory” (Common & John Legend – “Selma”)
MA $8000 CT $33,000
Lordy! Rich strikes again: 3.11 to 3.40
4. “Neutron Dance” (Pointer Sisters – “Beverly Hills Cop”)
MA $13,000 CT $33,000
At last! Nadia scores at 1.86 to Rich’s 1.98.
FAST TRACK: “Gonna Fly Now” (Bill Conti – “Rocky”)
MA $13,000 CT $43,000
Rich had the only right title

Rich owned that round and Team MA has one more chance to catch up in the next round. Never doubt that it’s possible when the song values double.

Round 4: BILLY JOEL
First 4: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “We Didn’t Start the Fire”
MA $23,000 CT $43,000
The ladies pulled it off at 1.34 to 1.53 for the guys. Even more amazing, it looked like everyone knew all the words.
2. “Piano Man”
MA $33,000 CT $43,000
Aerica & Nadia again! 1.47 to 1.82. Go, cowgirls!
3. “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me”
MA $43,000 CT $43,000
Can you believe this!?! The ladies got it at 1.12 and now we have a tie
4. “Uptown Girl”
CA $43,000 IL $53,000
Rich & Michael ain’t going down like that– they nailed this one in 1.02 seconds
FAST TRACK: “You May Be Right”
MA $43,000 CT $73,000
Whoa! Rich & Michael got the lone solve when the ladies went with a lyric (“I may be crazy”

So the #gangsterblazers clinched it on that very last song, but it was still a great round for Aericka & Nadia. Their take-home pay is half their bank and thanks to their performance in the last round, that amounts to $21,500. Not bad at all!

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at the million if they get all 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. R&B: “I Can See Clearly Now” (Johnny Nash) – They thought it was Sunshiny Day. Oops! No million now.
2. POP: “7 Years” (Lukas Graham) – They got it $98,000
3. ’80s: “Wrapped Around Your Finger” (The Police) – Another win! $123,000
4. MADE IN THE U.K.: “Speed of Sound” (Coldplay) Rich was on it $148,000
5. HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH: “Let Her Cry” – They got 4 out of 5, beginning the round with $73,000 and finished with $173,000.

Rich & Michael now have the option to play another song and double their $173,000 to $346,000 if they get the song right. If they blow it, they will also blow half their money, and only take home $86,500. They were given the category to help them decide: “Classic Rock.” Rich said they were originally going to walk away but changed their mind and decided to go for it. Rich stepped up to the plate and hit a home run with “Take the Money and Run” by the Steve Miller Band. The only line they heard to get it was: “He ain’t gonna let those two escape justice.”

We were really happy that Rich & Michael decided to play the last song. We were betting they wouldn’t and then know the song. They did get 4 out 5 in the lead-up, after all, and we had faith in the song knowledge of the #gangsterblazers. Still, $86,500 is a whole lot to Kiss Goodbye over one song, so we wouldn’t have blamed them if they chose to leave. Congratulations, guys!

Thanks so much, Michael. It was SO GREAT that you got a Steve Miller song!! I used that title in several of the recaps when the players chose to split 😀

Congrats again to you and Rich!
