Yankees Beat Orioles for 16th Straight Time

Gary Sanchez hit a three run home run to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles in New York on August 14th. With that, the Yankees not only swept the four game series with the Orioles, they beat Baltimore for the 16th straight time this season. Mercifully, this was the last game of the 2019 season between the two. New York finishes with a 17-2 record over Baltimore this year. The Orioles actually took two of three from New York to open the season.

The Yankees’ hitters feasted on Oriole pitching this year, hitting 61 home runs in those 19 games. Gleyber Torres hit 13 of those 61 and Sanchez hit 10 to lead the club. The pair set a club record for double digit home runs by two teammates in a season, breaking the old record of 22 by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, who hit 11 each in 22 games against the Boston Red Sox for the legendary 1927 Yankees.

New York improved to 81-41 on the season, while the Orioles fell to 39-82. The loss gave Baltimore the dubious distinction of being the first team eliminated in a division race this season. While the Orioles’ season long nightmare against the Yankees is at an end for 2019, the two teams will open the 2020 regular season with a three game series against each other in Baltimore with Opening Day on March 26th.
