Final Jeopardy: 18th Century Americans (9-19-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/19/2018) in the category “18th Century Americans” was:

In a famous 1775 speech, he said, “Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston!”

5x champ Kyle Jones, a music teacher from Aurora, CO, went over the $100K mark yesterday by $7,602. In Game 6, his opponents are: Jonathan Lau, an actuarial consultant from Jersey City, NJ; and Jordan Moore, a librarian from Atlanta, GA.

Try a Phil Spector wig, Alex If you’ve been checking out our host this week, you must have noticed the beard go down to a goatee. Today it was down to a mustache and by tomorrow, that will likely be gone. Jeopardy.com has it all on video. For Halloween, I’d like to suggest a Phil Spector wig.

Round 1 Categories: Celebrities’ Fashion Lines – World History – Among Time’s 50 Best Podcasts of 2018 – This & That – Say It 3 Times – Where “Yu” Goin’?

Kyle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Say It 3 Times” under the $800 clue, with 8 clues left after it. He was in third place with $800, $2,800 less than Jordan’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Say this cliche Lord Harold Samuel gave about the 3 most important things in real estate. show

Jordan finished in the lead with $4,600. Kyle and Jonathan were in a second-place tie with $2,600 each.

Round 2 Categories: Leonard Bernstein at 100 – Poets & Poetry – Hot, Cross Nuns – Double “B”S – Awards & Honors – Here’s Your Metal

Kyle found the first Daily Double in “Awards & Honors” under the $1,600 clue on the 14th pick. He was in the lead with $13,800 at this point, $9,200 more than Jordan in second place. He bet $3,000 and couldn’t come up with a guess in time so he was WRONG.

4 clues later, Jordan got the last Daily Double in “Here’s Your Metal” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $5,400, she now had $3,400 less than Kyle’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

This precious metal got is name from a Spanish word for “silver” show

Kyle finished in the lead with $10,000. Jordan was next with $9,800 and Jonathan was in third place with $7,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS PATRICK HENRY?

On eNotes.com, it says “In his Speech to the Virginia Convention,” Henry returns repeatedly to the metaphor of chains and slavery to characterize the relationship between the colonies and Britain.” The quote in the clue is the second time. It is also noted that Henry was a slave owner himself, as were other members of the House of Burgesses, “and there is no small irony in the metaphor that Henry chose to appeal to their masculine pride and dignity.”

The majority of Jeopardy! clues on Patrick Henry, of course, have to do with the last line of the 3/23/1775 speech. Here’s a funny one from the very last game of Ken Jennings’ 75-game streak: YADA YADA YADA ($400) In a 1775 speech he declared, “I know not what course others may take…” yada yada yada.

Jonathan went with Paul Revere. He lost his $3,500 bet. That left him $3,500.

Jordan got it right. She bet $6,999 for a $16,799 finish.

Kyle got it right, too. He bet $9,601 so he won this game with $19,601. His 6-day total is $127,203.

Final Jeopardy (9/19/2018) Kyle Jones, Jonathan Lau, Jordan Moore

A triple stumper from each round:

THIS & THAT ($600) In 1868 the prestigious winemaking Chateau Lafite was bought by a member of this family

HOT, CROSS NUNS ($1600) In “Change of Habit”, Mary Tyler Moore clashes with a local priest & falls for this rocker

    Does anyone remember what the $200 clue in World History was tonight? It’s driving me crazy that I can’t remember it. Thanks in advance

    • VJ says:

      @Dizzy, don’t feel too bad — it was the very first clue chosen

      ($200) “Meaning separateness”, it was the official policy of racial segregation in South Africa until the ’90s

    This game was a thriller. Kyle was able to make up lost ground in the Leonard Bernstein category, which I think favored him since he’s a music teacher. He only missed one clue in there. But good for him. I like his reserved demeanor, as opposed to someone like Austin Rogers who is just about showboating.

    I want J! contestants to be sober, sophisticated people, not people who treat it as a circus. Go join other shows if u need to dance and do weird stuff to get attention.

    I haven’t decided which team I will support in the All Star tourney. But I do know which I will NOT support and it is the one with Austin Rogers as captain.

    • VJ says:

      I agree, klm, Kyle lucked out with that Bernstein category today. I was thinking he can do well in the ToC if they have opera in his quarter-final and he’s matched up with players who despair when they see that category . I also think Kyle has a great smile.

    • Lou says:

      I agree, if you remember last week riley had made too many wild guesses and ended up eliminated from final jeopardy. I guess she wasn’t too prepared for the show. I also need to see strong contestants that are more relaxed and well prepped and not people coming on and trying to make bad guesses to a clue they don’t know. Like I.said, don’t buzz in if you don’t know the answer. You could lose a lot of cash. Another example of a player who bet too much on daily doubles and lost back in 2016 was Rachel Lin from New York. She wasn’t prepped either

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      @klm Same as well, I haven’t decided which team I will support, BUT you just need to wait and see which paired with which, but I have a feeling Alan Lin could pick either Buzzy Cohen or Austin Rogers. I will support ANY team except Brad Rutter as captain.

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

    Wow, two players got a knack on that but it was a VERY CLOSE call. I would’ve had a heart attack if he loses, but $127,000+? Not enough. He needs to win tomorrow because Ryan and Josh won 7 games, if he loses, it’s back to square one again.

    @JJ
    VICES? The only way to get rid of a temptation is to give in to it…..Life without “vices” would be boring, let me tell you from loooooong experience :):):)

    • VJ says:

      That’s funny. Today’s quote was about temptation — Why resist temptation? There will always be more. ~ Don Herold

      And I meant to say something about who he was — an American humorist sometimes credited with that piece called “I Would Pick More Daisies,” (if I had my life to live over again, I would eat more ice cream and so on). He published it in the Reader’s Digest in the ’50s but it also gets credited to a Nadine Stair earlier than that. Then there’s a Spanish version called “Instantes” that gets credited to Jose Luis Borges who could not possibly have written it, imo.

      P.S. I was miffed that they didn’t finished the Poetry category today. LOL!!

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
        I know, I read it. That’s why I used the other saying to tell JJ!
        Life without vices or temptations would be boooooring!

  5. Lou says:

    Congrats once again to Kyle and to the people here for the correct prediction. I still feel that Patrick henrry’s Give me liberty or give me death is still pretty famous. but despite that, I just feel that the newcomers needs to step up their game a little bit if they want to replace Kyle. Imean think about it, with the all star games coming up soon, I wonder if one of these former champions could be chosen for the all star games as well, VJ? How strong are Kyle’s chances in the toc?

  6. John B./I. says:

    @VJ
    I know you didn’t mean that I’m retired as a critical remark, I worked hard enough in Austria and on Maui (about 70 hours a week in each country) to be able to retire early. But I said already a few days ago that my time zone allows me to post when others on the mainland just get up, go to work or work already, I understand that completely. It just seems to me that we had more posts just a year ago, leave alone before that. But I guess priorities change as you get older and because of other reasons. Maybe participation will jump up again for no apparent reason, who knows?

    • VJ says:

      No I didn’t it, I just meant retirees have more free time at their disposal, but there’s a good example of how you can read something in a different way than it was meant online.

      I was being serious but things that are said in jest online, in particular, often get taken the wrong way

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
        You are absolutely right and that’s the way I perceived it. After all, we “know” each other long enough!!

  7. VJ says:

    That Bazooka clue today reminded me of an old song we used to sing when I was a kid. Someone obviously taught it to their kids because a hip hop song was made out of it. The old version went:

    My ma gave me a nickel to buy a pickle
    I didn’t buy a pickle, I bought some chewing gum
    Chew chew chew chew chewing gum, chew chew chewing gum
    Chew chew chew chew chewing gum, chew chew chewing gum

    Re: the beard As far as I’m concerned, it was a publicity stunt and Trebek wasn’t going to keep it no matter how the vote turned out.

    Congrats to John on the correct prediction.

  8. John B./I. says:

    Congratulations to Kyle for another win! The “garter” order was a little slip though. Nevertheless, he seems to be REALLY settled in. Jordan – funny how many names are bi-gender these days- got it too and Jonathan was at least in the ballpark.

    And where is everybody on Spoiler Talk? Only 4 people today. Wake up, people!

    Finally, I guess the FOX survey was not quite accurate about the beard or they are pulling people’s legs as usual? Idk, probably just a subconscious thing of mine, but somehow I don’t trust men with a full beard, like they have something to hide. A nicely groomed mustache is as far as I go, but that’s just me. I’m sure there are enough ladies who are crazy about a man with a beard. Convenient in a way, but having a beard I would feel kind of dirty. Nothing like a close , clean shave first thing in the morning for me!
    And I was watching some Wile e. Coyote toons last night…..LOL !!!!!!VERY loud!

    • JJ says:

      Congratulations John on an accurate prediction of 2 correct!!
      Please allow me to address your thoughts/concerns/frustrations re: the low number of attendees on “Spoiler Talk”. Simply put, there are many, many people out there who just don’t want to know anything about the game until they watch it, and by partaking in “ST”, it’s taking the element of surprise away from them.
      For example, VJ writes a weekly summary of one of my favorite shows, “Shameless” on Showtime. It airs Sunday night and she posts her thoughts Monday AM. Well, I record the program and typically my first opportunity to watch it is Wednesday evening (tonight), so since I’ve yet to see the most recent episode, I will not read VJ’s column because I don’t want to know what happens in advance. (VJ knows this about me because we recently went through something similar w/ another show that we both enjoy called “The Affair”.)
      Another example – I hate when people tell me how a movie ends if I’ve yet to see it. If I’m going to invest money in a ticket and 2-plus hours of my time to sit in the theater, I do NOT want to be told of the conclusion until I can see it for myself.
      If someone did read ST for the first time for whatever reason, our hints are so obvious and detailed, even a creature as dense as Wile E. Coyote could figure it out…
      In conclusion, you might want to temper “calling out” others for not embracing ST the way that we do. Their reasoning could be quite justified… Have a good night!

      • John B./I. says:

        @JJ
        It’s actually just past 11 a.m. now, but thanks for you congrats!! (even got the 2 players right, the second I picked because she was a librarian (wasn’t quite sure whether Jordan was a he or she…) Maybe I should use the “Royal decree ” more often, seems to help!! :):):)
        I understand and accept your reasoning, just that a year ago 20 or so posts on CotD were not unusual. Just an observation.

        • VJ says:

          @John, you should also consider the fact that you are retired while others work.

          Also, some things take priority over online activities. Even for me, if my granddaughter wants me to help her build Humpty Dumpty a wall, that is a definite priority in my life!

        • JJ says:

          Excellent points VJ. I rarely posted on the post game comments before this new season because when I leave work, I’m dong non-online stuff. And re retirement… I’ll have to work until i’m 80! I have way too many expensive habits (vices, perhaps?) to support!
