WHAT IS SURINAME?

In Europe, Dutch is the only official language of the Netherlands. In Belgium, it is one of three official languages, along with French and German. Outside of Europe, Suriname in South America is the world’s only independent country where Dutch is an official language. A Dutch colony for approx. 4 centuries, Suriname became a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1954. In 1975, the country became fully independent as well as a Member State of the United Nations. The CIA World Factbook states that English is widely spoken in Suriname. Sranan Tongo (aka Surinamese) is the country’s lingua franca and the most popular of several recognized dialects.

Terrific game tonight; anyone could have taken it. Those stumpers were tough; only one I remember knowing was the singer of Stand by Me. I did know the Final. I vaguely remember a family who lived down the street about 60 years ago and were from what was then called Surinam.

Aruba also has Dutch as an official languages

I wasn’t aware that Suriname was a former Dutch colony. Well, as they say, one learns something new every day.

what a dumb wager by Sri, yet he won. If only Cindy had doubled up!

  5. Louis Jin says:

Well Sri has made us very proud to begin his stint as the new champ. Hope he wins 5 or many more games like Tyler did. Suriname was also the daily double response Roger Craig got previously. A great game and now looking forward to see Ken hosting next.
