Final Jeopardy: Fashion (7-24-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/24/2018) in the category “Fashion” was:

Debuting in 1946, it was deemed “four triangles of nothing”; some critics even found it sinful

2x champ Dave Mattingly, a director of technology from Pennsylvania, has won $48,800 in 2 runaway games. Let’s see how he makes out in Game 3 against these ladies: Beth Schoenbach, a communications director from Washington, D.C.; and Tara O’Byrne, a sr. advisor on aviation security from Canada.

Round 1 Categories: It’s About the Money – Bible Book Abbreviations – 2-Term Cabinet Officers – This Is Only a Test – Celebrity Memoirs – Meaty Language

Dave found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “2-Term Cabinet Officers” under the $1,000 clue, with 7 clues to go after it. He was in the lead with $9,600, $7,800 more than Tara in second place. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

Josephus Daniels ran this branch of the military from 1913 to 1921 with FDR as assistant almost the whole time. show

Dave finished in the lead with $14,600. Tara was second with $3,800 and Beth was last with $1,400.

Round 2 Categories: Writers of Colonial America – A Hall of Fame Infield – Neo Geo – Ends in “FF” – A Ratio – Horn Blower

Dave found the first Daily Double in “A Ratio” under the $1,200 clue on the 7th pick. He was in the lead with $16,600 now, $10,400 more than Tara in second place. He bet $4,000 again and he was RIGHT again.

According to Charles’ Law, the ratio of volume to temp. for a gas is constant as long as this doesn’t change. show

Tara found the last Daily Double in “Neo Geo” under the $1,200 clue on the 18th pick. In second place with $5,400, she had $18,000 less than Dave’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Northern Rhodesia & Southern Rhodesia are today these 2 countries that begin with the same letter. show

Dave finished with a runaway $28,600. Tara was next with $9,000 and Beth was in third place with $200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS A BIKINI?

It’s hard to believe that the bikini bathing suit goes all the way back to the 1940s, a time period we associate with the second World War and much stricter attitudes towards just about everything, but it was in fact the nuclear testing on Bikini Atoll that inspired fashion designer Louis Reard to purposely name the skimpy bathing suit he designed the bikini “because he hoped that the raunchy two-piece would elicit the same shock and horror that the atomic bomb did,” according to Smithsonian Mag. Reard’s instincts were right. People were shocked but the revealing swimsuit still was a hit in Europe. It didn’t begin to become popular in the USA until the late 1960s, possibly helped along by the miniskirt.

Beth got it right. She bet $199, bringing her score up to $399.

Tara didn’t have a response and she didn’t bet anything. She remained at $9,000.

Dave got it right, too. As is his wont, he stood pat with his runaway $28,600. His 3-day total is $77,400.

Final Jeopardy (7/24/2018) Dave Mattingly, Beth Schoenbach, Tara O'Byrne

A triple stumper from each round:

CELEBRITY MEMOIRS ($400) It’s no dream– Arnold Schwarzenegger really did title his 2012 memoir this, like that of his 1990 sci-fi thriller

WRITERS OF COLONIAL AMERICA ($2000) Born Anne Dudley, she expressed her Puritan faith in her poetry

2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “American Authors”

On his 1849 death, it was said he was “regarded rather with curiosity than admiration” & “few will be grieved” show

    Actually ALL of Colombia was in red. The dark green in the SW were depicting
    Ecuador and Peru, in the NE/E the dark green was Venezuela and in the S/SE it was Brazil, the only 4 countries bordering Colombia from the NE to the S/SW. (plus Panama to the NW of course.) The light green were Peru to the W and Brazil to the E.

    • VJ says:

      didn’t you read the clue, John?

      • John Christian Ambion says:

        @John Actually, I am from the Philippines, which English is the de facto language, as with Filipino. And @VJ, he clarified those words from that picture.

  2. Dalton Higbee says:

    I wished Dave would bet everything on the first Daily Double, bet more than he did on the second one and bet something (like a big wager) in Final, but I’m glad he didn’t.

    • John B./I. says:

      yeah, I guess greedy he ain’t. As you said, good thing. You never know when the J clue writers may throw you a knuckleball.

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

    Wowie. Just like that, Wes Hazard is now out, that means the “spoiler” is in the ToC, three runaway games, three FJs all ended with a $0 wager, played high risks in DJ, and could possibly rival Josh Hill or Ryan Fenster. Three more days left and he could be the last champion of the season.

    And, are bikinis, swimsuits, and lingeries the same or different? This is more confusing.

    • John B./I. says:

      @John Christian
      Are you seriously saying that you don’t know the difference between a bikini and lingerie? :):):)

      • John Christian Ambion says:

        @John I think so, but the confusion comes from how those words used interchangeably.

        • VJ says:

          let’s put it this way, John Christian, nobody wears their lingerie to the beach (I hope)

        • John B./I. says:

          @John Christian
          Um, not really. There is a HUGE difference between even a daring bikini and lingerie…..:):)

        • John B./I. says:

          @John Christian
          I s English your native language? I never heard lingerie and bikini being interchangeable, not even in French or German. In Italian lingerie is “biancheria intima”,biancheria” actually meaning “linen”. “biancheria da letto” is e.g. bed linen or bedding from Italian, though even an Italian knows what Lingerie” is. That term is practically international!

  4. Lou says:

    Beth couldn’t get much rhythm going today. Also what was the clue that caused her score to go down to 200 dollars, VJ? How long has the skimpy bikinis been on the market lately and is there anyone you know that still wear them to this day? Furthermore I like Dave and his playing style since no matter if he gets final right or wrong he has the potential to be a five or six game winner for the 34th season finale.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
      In Hawaii you see anything BUT bikinis and in remote areas only the bottom part is worn.. (Little Beach in South Maui e.g.). Though officially topless is not legal in Hawaii, the police do not intervene. They look the other way – figuratively speaking- but since they wear all reflecting sunglasses you cannot be sure exactly where the male members of our finest are looking…:):):)

    • VJ says:

      @Lou, I guess they’ve been on the market since they first came out. I first heard about them in 1960 when Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini was a No. 1 hit. I wasn’t even a teenager yet but when I was, it was very difficult to get permission to get a 2-piece bathing suit, nevermind a bikini. And we also had to wear those horrible plastic bathing caps. LOL!

      The clue that caused Beth to go down to $200 was the $2000 “A Ratio” one about stress and another “str” word. That is on the extra clues list and so is the one that blew my mind today — they show a map with a South American country clearly bordered by Panama and no one knows what it is? Ay yi yi!

      • rhonda says:

        Oh, those hideous bathing caps, VJ lol. Do you remember the atrocious gym suits that we had to wear in school?

        • VJ says:

          yes I do remember those awful gym suits Rhonda, lol. And deliberately scuffing my saddle shoes up on the way home from school because I hated them so much.

          I suppose our parents’ generation had it worse — my father said they made him wear short pants and a beret to school and he threw his beret away and claimed he lost it. Guess where his father took him?

        • rhonda says:

          Where did he take him, VJ? To the woodshed??

        • VJ says:

          @Rhonda, yup!

        • rhonda says:

          Oh, no, I guess we were luckier than our parents were, at least in some ways!

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
        Missing “Colombia” is really a shock, map or not. Yes, I have a friend in Panama and was there myself, but Panama is the southernmost Central American country whose southern border goes right into Colombia, though the exact border is not even always established because of all the swamps between S. Panama and N. Colombia. A heaven for drug smugglers. Ever heard of Medellin??????

        • Albert says:

          I think the players were slightly confused and hesitated to ring in because part of the country was highlighted in red. I was a little confused also.

        • VJ says:

          It was a 2 part thing, Albert — first they showed the larger area that was New Granada (that also included Panama) and then they highlighted the red part that is a present day country in South America. There’s only one South American country that borders Panama

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      @Lou Have you watched “Spongebob SquarePants”? Because like the champ, it is unstoppable, winning every KCA for Favorite Cartoon except in 2008. Besides, a lot of children know Bikini Bottom than anyone else.

      • Louis says:

        @John Ambion, yes I watched spongebob when I was a kid and remembered about bikini bottom and the show winning the KCA award. My brothers watched that show when they were younger and still it is popular this day. I just don’t know how the contestants not knew Colombia in south America when I have a friend that is a native of that country residing there for a job. I mean it’s not that difficult to know geography if you look carefully.

  5. Paul says:

    Is this correct?

    Lani Gonzalez had locks in her first 3 games and $0 bets in all 3 in October 2016.

    Ryan Chaffee was the same in December 2009.

  6. John B./I. says:

    Well,well,well….
    Dave does not only win because of mistakes by his opponents (Fri), he is a steam roller:
    FRI: won by a margin of 20+ K, with 14K+ to spare to make it still a runaway
    MON: close, won by 11K+ but only with $ 99 to spare for a RA
    TODAY: won by 20K+ with 14K+ to spare for a RA……

    He is now #10 on the ToC list, just 1.001 behind Scott and passed Ali by 9.599.
    There is a small chance for one more player to make it on the list before the summer break: if Dave loses tomorrow and the same player wins Wed,Thu and Fri with a sizeable amount each day (at least an average of over 17K per game).
    I am too lazy to look it up, but when did a player win with 3 runaways in a row? Probably Ken Jennings. He won RAs and beat his opponents left and right. Only he mostly wagered something at FJ, even if it was a RA. Dave stays put since he has already a nice amount before FJ. WAY TO GO DAVE!!!!! I am 100% certain that we will see him (even should his streak end tomorrow) as well as Scott and Ali at the ToC, provided they don’t postpone it.
