ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Irish Playwright Samuel Beckett and Swiss-Italian sculptor Alberto Giacometti were both living in Paris in the 1930s when they became friends. In most articles about them, you have to wade through the history of their friendship before you get around to Beckett commissioning Giacometti to create a tree for a 1961 production of Beckett’s 1952 play “Waiting for Godot”. According to glennhorowitz.com, “Beckett imagined the process would be a straightforward one for his friend, but Giacometti instead labored over the design. Finally, though, Giacometti created a work that not only satisfied both his and Beckett’s demanding standards, but also elevated the setting of the play itself.”WHAT IS “WAITING FOR GODOT”?
“Waiting for Godot” is a frequent topic of Final Jeopardy!, most recently seen in Amy Schneider’s 19th game.
Emily bet it all and doubled her score to $15,600.
William bet $6,801, bringing him up to $15,601.
Erica bet $4,001 and that brought her up to $15,601. So Erica and William had to engage in a tiebreaker.
The Tiebreaker clue in the category “BIOGRAPHIES” was:
“The Passage of Power” covers 1958 to 1964 in Robert Caro’s 4th volume on the life of this American show
William buzzed in first with the correct response and that’s how he became the new Jeopardy! champ.
A triple stumper from each round:

3 years ago today was Alex Trebek’s last tiebreaker during his lifetime. July 18th, what is it with you & tiebreakers?
Erica was the best player, but we know that the best doesn’t always win. Both she and William wagered enough to lock out Emily, but $6001 was the proper wager here. She’ll regret that for a long time. Until a few years ago, tied players kept their $$ and both came back.
I thought the 3 DDs were pretty soft, and I guessed right on FJ. Read the play 50+ years ago in French class but never saw a production.
Stumpers were mostly nasty. I did know Marjorie Morgenstern’s name; the police illness; the colorful body part; and the Behold the pale clue.
A very exciting game today and a congrats to all the players on the triple solve. Also happy to see William winning this game.
I’ve never seen this many triple stumper in a game. When was the last time we had more than 13 missed clues in the main round?
The way Erica reacted to Ken saying she’d got FJ right, the way she gasped and expelled her breath, it felt as if she thought she’d won, only to realize her wager was not good enough. And it wasn’t. She had no business wagering that amount as it only covered her for Emily doubling up. She also should’ve covered for William doubling up, which she didn’t. And deserved to lose because of her math incompetence.
I thought she was afraid that her scribbled response would not be accepted and really, the last letter looked a lot more like an L than a T.
I thought she had such a rush of relief when it was accepted that her reflexes were going to be off in the tiebreaker anyway.
Oh VJ, now that I recall the way she scribbled her FJ response, your explanation does seem more reasonable.
Personally, I’m not sure that I would have accepted that scribbled response. Fortunately, she did lose, and that was only right.
What an exciting finish it has been to start off the new week! This is the second time this season that we had a tiebreaker. Only 9 more games to go until the season finale.
