Michelle finished in the lead with $15,200. Johanna was next with $14,400 and Wes was in third place with $6,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “JAWS”?

Peter Benchley considered a slew of titles for his bestselling 1974 novel “Jaws.” HuffPost has an extensive list of rejected titles provided to them by Ballantine Books, as well as a slideshow of Benchley’s handwritten notes. On the author’s website, in an interview with Brett Gilliam, the author confirms that he and Doubleday editor Tom Congdon went through some 125 titles before deciding upon “Jaws”. Congdon said: “Jaws? What does it mean?” to which Benchley responded: “Who knows? At least it’s short.” The author also mentions his father’s joke title, “What’s That Noshin’ On My Laig?” (brought up during FJ by Alex Trebek).

The 1975 Steven Spielberg-directed film based on the novel was also a massive success, picking up 3 Oscars for Best Sound, Best Film Editing and Best Music, Original Dramatic Score. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost out to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Wes got it right. He bet $6,399, bringing him up to $12,799.

Johanna was going for 1984’s “The Hunt for Red October,” but only got as far as “Octob.” She lost $14,000 and was left with $400.

Michelle also got it. She bet $3,200 and won the match with $18,400. Michelle Cabral is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Does anybody know if Jeopardy is having in-person auditions in Philadelphia yet?

  2. mimsy says:

VJ, I have a question about the sneak peek — how do you pick the category? I mean today it was the Flip Your House category and I just thought any of the others would have been better. (just a wish, not a criticism. I love the sneak peek)

    • VJ says:

Hey there, mimsy. Basically I try to go with a category that doesn’t have a Daily Double, doesn’t have a triple stumper and doesn’t have an image (although sometimes I have had to use one and link to a similar image). All the categories today had stumpers or DDs except Flip Your House. (I really wanted to go with the Slayer category today– a lot less typing!!– but you can see on the recap, they missed one clue)

How dare they mentioned Toys “R” Us.

  4. John Christian Ambion says:

We have another Canadian Jeopardy! champion. I wonder if someday it could take more than 3 wins. I don’t know, but I guess we’ll find out soon.

  5. Louis says:

Six long weeks after Rob worman won six games in February, we had dhruv winning big in April then two weeks later, Larry won 100000 and Josh was our fourth streaker in May. And now another agonizing six weeks of waiting, we need Michelle to win four or five games in July. It’s two long months VJ. Also have you seen any sequels of the Jaws movies previously John and VJ? Michelle s response of don’t do drugs should have been accepted.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, the original movie was the only one I ever saw — kinda like Psycho and The Exorcist. The first one was quite enough for me! LOL

I wouldn’t count on Michelle winning her second game, let alone 4 or 5. 🙁

    @ Don M
Congratulations! First swing and a home run!
Congratulations to Michelle, though her bet -and Johanna’s- were a little unusual. But we have a new champ, Wes stays at #15 on the ToC for the moment but I think not for long. He might be off it even before the summer break.
In retrospect THFRO was the only other valid guess (I could not think of anything else in the CotD). Michelle got lucky though that Johanna was wrong….. Though they would have dinged her for the missing “er”, had she been right.
As for Wes, Idk if it was nerves, or if his first three games were all taped in the morning
and then he lost his momentum after lunch, who knows?
The counting starts again and we will see how Michelle will fare tomorrow. As William Weyser said it will be Friday The 13th. Depends whether you are superstituous or not, the show airing tomorrow may actually have been taped on April 13th (also a Friday…!!) Judging from the scores Michelle and Johanna did pretty well while Wes was not really a factor today. Michelle’s betting strategy in FJ might become a problem though. I tried to figure out what made her bet just 3.200 but can’t figure it out. The FJ category was certainly not intimidating or outlandish, at least imo. At least we are now 4 /12 for the week, or one third.

Johanna should have been negged for not phrasing her correct response properly on the first picked clue of the game in Math and Science $800. The next two clues were Triple Stumpers, and then she got the DD. Luckily given how the rest of the game turned out it didn’t affect the outcome of the game.

  8. William Weyser says:

We’re never gonna get the 1st 4-time champion since Josh Hill, ARE WE?! Well, tomorrow’s Friday The 13th, and there’s always hope for some good luck.

    • John B./I. says:

      @William
Yup, it was May 25 when the episode aired where Josh lost to Virginia. Will be 7 weeks tomorrow.

      • Richard Corliss says:

It all depends on the contestants’ speed and knowledge.

The Teen Tournament is gonna be on Season 35.

        • John Christian Ambion says:

You’re right, on speed and knowledge, but if no one reaches past three days before the season ends, that would be it.
