Final Jeopardy: Civil War History (7-14-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/14/2016) in the category “Civil War History” was:

Of the 4 prewar states that permitted slavery but did not secede, it was the largest in area & latest to join the union.

New champ Sue Baker won $19,000 yesterday. In her first title defense, her opponents are: Ellen Corrigan, from Philadelphia, PA; and Ken Fischer, from New York, NY.

Round 1 Categories: College Newspapers – 16th Century America – Famous Gingers – Health & Medicine – Plays & Playwrights – Song Words

Ken landed on the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “College Newspapers” under the $800 clue with only one clue left after it in the same category. He was in second place with $5,200, $1,200 less than Sue’s lead. He had already responded correctly to the other 3 clues (but not consecutively). He bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT. He also got the last one for another $1,000.

Ellen finished in the lead with $20,400. Ken was next with $18,400 and Sue was in third place with $10,000.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MISSOURI?

Only 4 states fit the first part of the clue: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri. They were already “slave” states before the Civil War but did not secede from the Union. Delaware and Maryland were both original colonies. They are also among the 10 smallest states in the USA. Kentucky became the 15th state on June 1, 1792. Missouri became the 24th state on August 10, 1821. In area, Missouri is larger than Kentucky, whether by total area, land or water. These lists are both on NetState.com: states by area and by admission to Union

Sue thought it was Texas. She lost everything but a dollar.

Ken wrote down Kentucky. That cost him $17,600 and left him with $600.

Ellen wrote down Tennessee, crossed it out and went with Texas. She lost her $16,401 bet but she still had $3,999 left and that made her the new Jeopardy! champ.

Yet another example of a bad bet by the player in second place. With an optional range of 2001 (to have the opportunity to take the lead on a zero bet by the leader and cover the double up by the player in third) to 8399 (to guard against the zero bet by the player in third), Ken could be returning .
Once again, the single most important subject a player can learn is Game Theory.

Agreed, Eric. I imagine that people make bets like that because… well, people are greedy more than they are smart, I guess.

I enjoyed this match. I liked the categories. My favorite was “stock symbols.” Glad to see Ellen perform well in that category. Although she was in 3rd place at the end of Round one she got it together in Round two and clinched the win even though she missed fj. Her coryat score was the highest of the 3 contestants in today’s game. Smart strategy Ellen. Congrats!

Thanks, Mathwiz, I shall take my credit lol!! All in all, it was a very well-played game today, despite no one getting the FJ. I thought the Ginger category was fun.

    • VJ says:

yes, it was fun, Rhonda. When I saw it was about people, I figured Tina Louise’s character was gonna turn up 🙂

  4. VJ says:

It really was quite an intense battle between Ken and Ellen at the end of the second round. They all had their moments today: Sue ran the Ginger category right off the bat. Ken could not beat Ellen on the buzzer, noticeably in Stock Symbols. Ken ran 16th Century America.

That 16th Century category and 4 more clues from the match are over here now.

0/3… I’ll give Rhonda credit for that, since she did make the point of geography FJs being harder than they look. Also, credit goes to Eric for predicting Kentucky to appear… though apparently the “Texas Compromise” won out today.

    So, about the wrong answers:
    – Kentucky: 37th in area, 15th to join the Union, Border State
    – Tennessee: 36th in area, 16th to join the Union, Confederate State
    – Texas: 2nd in area, 28th to join the Union, Confederate State
    By comparison:
    – Missouri: 21st in area, 24th to join the Union, Border State

It is really disappointing to see an intense Jeopardy battle with big DD bets, and then witness everyone fail on FJ.
