WHAT IS PORTLAND, OREGON?

The above video will tell you the story of how Portland got its name from a coin flip between Francis Pettygrove and Asa Lovejoy. Pettygrove chose Portland as he was from Maine and Lovejoy, being from Massachusetts, picked Boston. You already know Portland won. What’s interesting is how the story says these men picked their hometowns when Pettygrove was actually born in Calais, ME (2020 pop. 3,079) and Lovejoy was born in Groton, MA (2020 pop. 11,315).

It’s also interesting that one of Portland, OR’s nicknames is Stumptown, a nickname that Wikipedia says came from “a period of phenomenal growth in Portland after 1847. The city was growing so rapidly that the stumps of trees were left behind until manpower could be spared to remove them.” The 2020 population of Portland, OR was 652,503 vs. Portland, ME’s 2020 population of 68,408. These figures apply just to the city and not the metro area.

Halley was going for New York but didn’t finish it. She lost $7,199 and had one dollar left.

Hoa was going for San Francisco, also incomplete. She lost $13,000 and finished with $900.

David wrote out New York. He lost $13,000 but won the game with the $2,000 he had left and that is how David Bzdak became the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (6/30/2022) Halley Ryherd, David Bzdak, Hoa Quach

I thought that FJ was easy, and I’m a “right coaster”, but, inland. It was just one of those that a brainy J! contestant should know.

What struck me, though, was the low energy by all three players. Just not an “on fire” game.

  2. Louis says:

I would love to see a triple solve tomorrow hopefully to start July off on the right foot.

  3. Howard says:

Oh, the humanity. I’ve lived in Portland, OR since 1987. Was 99% sure no one would get that one. Thanks for sparing me for having to explain the coin flip.
I missed most of the show but got in just in time for FJ.

Some of those stumpers weren’t too bad. Tashkent’s country; sensational journalism; Schiller’s ode; the cabin/corn word; and Scottsboro’s state.

  4. Cece says:

The FJ clues keep getting weirder and weirder. I’m starting to miss Whitman…

    • Jacob Ska says:

Cece, That’s the exact word I used on Clue of the Day this morning (weird). 🤔 At this point I’m speechless when it comes to fj clues. I really feel bad for the contestants.

      • Cece says:

I may be wrong, Jacob, but I doubt Alex would have approved of the impracticality of these clues.

  5. Collin says:

Too bad we still didn’t get the contestants to get the correct responses in Final Jeopardy. David is the new champ with $2,000 which is a really low score new champ.

  6. Lawrence says:

Two days in a row both 2nd *and* 3rd place had a chance to win a triple stumper by wagering low, and all four contestants blew it and let the leader scoop. Sigh.

    • klm says:

i agree. today Hoa only needed to cover for Halley covering up. so she had to wager only $401 i think and then hope for david to get it wrong, whcih he did. hoa then wouldve won with a big chunk, not the paltry and laughable $2000 that david won.

      • klm says:

        i meant, Halley “doubling” up.
i do think it’s better to be in a close second going into FJ in case it’s a tough category.

      • Howard says:

I tend to agree, but $1101 would have been the proper wager for Hoa, so she’d win by $1 if she got FJ right and David bet $0. That also would have locked out Halley, who could not earn more than $14400. $201 would not have accomplished that.

  7. William Weyser says:

Tomorrow, please give us a Triple Solve.

  8. Jacob Ska says:

VJ, Nice summary on Portland. I got curious and decided to google “u.s. cities named after other u.s. cities.” Was I ever in for a shock. There are several cities named after other u.s. cities to my surprise. I learn something new every day. Never knew there were so many cities named after other cities. Wikipedia had a nice listing.

We’re now into day 59 without a fj triple solve since April 8. As Kevin has pointed out we are 3 days in a row with triple stumpers for fj though. Yikes! As Marvin Gaye sang ” What’s going on?”

    • VJ says:

Thanks, Jacob. As we know, a lot of places on the East Coast were named for places in England. Per Portland, Maine’s Wikipedia page, it was named after the Isle of Portland (in the English Channel), where rabbits are thought to be bad luck. 🤣🤣🤣 the things we come across online!!

      • rhonda says:

On behalf of all of my rabbit relatives, I say what is wrong with those folks in the Isle of Portland!! Of all the noiv to besmirch us like that!

  9. Kevin Cheng says:

For the third day in a row this week, we have another triple stumper in FJ! If we get another triple stumper tomorrow, then we will 4 triple stumper in FJ leaving the week with only one correct FJ response. $2,000 is the second lowest payday of the season surpassing Maureen’s $2,200 win on 3/7/22.
