ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ALBANY?

The players appeared to have no trouble landing on the capital of the Empire State and saying “Bingo” to themselves. A similar clue was a triple stumper in the 11/3/2010 game: ALPHABETICALLY FIRST ($800) …among the state capitals. There was another Alphabetically First category in a 2006 ToC quarter-final), but it was referring to Albany as a county. It was not a stumper.

Kevin bet it all and finished with $15,200.

Barton bet it all, too. That brought him up to $35,200.

Lindsey bet $7,101 and won the game with $35,201, and that made her the new Jeopardy! champ.

Is this Lindsey the most annoying contestant other than Austin the bartender!! Choke that ringer the way she does!!!! OMG….Why doesn’t the producer of the show show her how to use it. Other contestants don’t have to choke it to death!!! I will not be watching until she is gone from the show. Can’t wait until she’s gone!

    • Richard Corliss says:

      That’s so unkind.

    • momdbomb says:

Somebody make her stop that maniacal clicking! I can’t take it!

    • VJ says:

Well, the thing is we’ve been waiting for a 4- or 5-day champ for so long that a lot of us wouldn’t mind if a player shouted Hallelujah!! after every clue they got right as long as they keep winning

  2. Darcie says:

Thank you for posting this, we had a weather statement (tornado warning!) that prevented us from hearing final jeopardy.

  3. Albert says:

Why doesn’t the show have more people over 50 and 60 and even 70? I see waaaaay too many people in their early 30s.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Albert
Very true! The older you get (and I’m not talking 98) the more you have heard, seen, learned. Point in case: Larry Martin at the latest TT!!

      • JP says:

Too many early 30s contestants relative to what?

        1. Relative to their share of the population in the U.S./Canada?
        2. Relative to their share of those contestants who pass the online test?
        3. Relative to their share of those who pass the in person audition?
        4. Relative to your personal feelings as to what the breakdown of ages should be?

It sounds like you think they are discriminating against older prospective contestants. That could very well be. But I don’t think any of us has enough information to actually say any demographic (age, sex, etc.) is being discriminated against by the show.

        • VJ says:

Personally, I don’t think they have enough contestants named Heather in proportion to how popular that name was in the ’80s….

          just kidding 😉

        • John B./I. says:

Regardless of age or gender HI is underrepresented. There are far more contestants from states with a much lower population than HI. (AK also being underrepresented). One reason: It is much easier to do “in person” interviews or have the “brain bus” in densely populated areas. The J team comes to HI every other year at best. If you take the NE area and go down all the way to Florida, include OH, PA, etc you have a much easier accessible percentile of the population.

I did the online test three times. One score was 40, two were 42… I never was contacted. And I am not a minority, 100% Caucasian, but I was just over 60 at the first test and the other 2 below 65. Never even got a call. I am not saying that J discriminates on purpose but it seems that states that have a denser population per square mile and an excellent, easy to use highway/interstate access get more contestants on the air. Possibly because it is more convenient to drum a certain number of possible players in New York City together than say, in Iowa, Idaho, etc. Just my observation over the years.

        • JP says:

I’ve taken the online test the last four times it’s been offered, and I’m fairly certain I’ve scored between 40-45 the last three times, and I too have never received an invitation to an in-person audition. Maybe there will be better luck from the April test! (I am 27 years old)

I’m guessing the introduction of the online test has greatly increased representation of more sparsely populated areas, but I’m also guessing travel requirements for the in-person audition will drive down their representation, as you suggested.

        • John B./I. says:

          @JP
          PS
Sorry, no place under my previous comment. Just tomorrow, Friday, the players are from Pittsburgh, Jersey City and Baltimore.
Just a few numbers of population density:
          NYC: 28.500, Jersey City :16.700,Pittsburgh: 5.500,Baltimore:7.500
(all #s p/sq mi.) Population density in HI: 221, AK just over 1 per sq mi…..not to mention that HI is a 6 hour flight from the mainland, Anchorage almost 4 hours from Seattle, almost 6 from L.A.

  4. Albert says:

Barton reminds me a lot of Jon Cryer.

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

I think what Lindsay did is that she played a very risky game and won by a margin of $1 to become the new Jeopardy! champion. I have a feeling that for her to make it to the ToC, she must replicate that performance, but it’s the odds that stacked against her, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow.

  6. VJ says:

That was quite an impressive pre-FJ score for Lindsey. She took the lead from Barton with only 10 clues to go. She had $18,100 and he had $17,600 at that point. They only got to 8 of the 10 that remained and she made that extra $10,000 off the 6 clues she got. (Kevin got the other 2).

  7. John says:

Re: the Blitz Quiz: LA would be a borderline state (pun intended) since a small part of it is east of the Mississippi,no?

  8. Richard Corliss says:

Kevin couldn’t get things going today.

  9. John says:

It seems that congratulations are in order for our new champ, Lindsey. Nice totals (over 53K before J). Unfortunately Kevin was no factor, so it was a 2 way game. But all 3 got FJ, all 3 DDs correct (one each, the first real easy, the third way tougher imo).
I wonder if there will be a category related to Ireland tomorrow for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day?

  10. Lou says:

A great triple solve and a big congratulations to all the players. But kudos to Lindsay for winning today. I just wish Barton could have won more but still Lindsay could break the curse. It all depends on what happens tomorrow and next week. By the way VJ and John, is there a chance Jackie Fuchs could still be on the top 15 with Larry gone?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
No. Because the TT winner will fill Larry Martin’s spot and not affect the standings, Jackie is overall #16 (or will be after the TT, and I believe we might have a College T as well). So unless somebody can’t make it for whatever reason, she is – for all intents and purposes – out. They could – and should imo – invite her back though. Whether she can then add a 5th victory ? Who knows.

      • Richard Corliss says:

All I know is that in the Teachers Tournament in May they are gonna wear ribbons to Larry Martin’s cancer. We won’t have a college tournament. There’s another teen tournament in June.
