Final Jeopardy: Other Nations’ Presidents (6-25-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/25/2019) in the category “Other Nations’ Presidents” was:

This nation’s 1st 8 presidents were all born in the U.S.; the 1st local-born president came in 1884, 37 years after independence

In the second semi-final of the 2019 Teen Tournament, the players are: Shriya Yarlagadda, a sophomore from Grand Blanc, MI; Eesha Sohail, a senior from Bakersfield, CA; and Ryan Presler, an 8th grader from Sioux Falls, SD.

Round 1 Categories: It Happened in the Bible – Juvenile Justice – People in American History – Teens on TV – Name the Game – You Got 2 As & 2 Ds

Shriya found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “American History” under the $1,000 clue on the 5th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $1,600, $1,200 more than Ryan in second place. She bet $1,200 and she was RIGHT.

Ryan finished in the lead with $5,600. Shriya was second with $4,000 and Eesha was last with $2,800.

Round 2 Categories: Young Writers – Transportation – International Parks – Hitmakers – Find a Synonym – The “Saurus”

Shriya found the first Daily Double in “Transportation” under the $1,600 clue, with 11 clues to go after it. She was in the lead with $9,600 at this point, $2,400 more than Ryan in second place. She bet $2,000 and added an extra letter to her answer. That made it WRONG.

4 clues later, Ryan found the last Daily Double in “Find a Synonym” under the $1,200 clue. He was in a tie for the lead with Shriya. They both had $8,000, $800 more than Eesha in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Ryan finished in the lead with $11,200. Shriya was next with $10,400 and Eesha was in third place with $9,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS LIBERIA?

In 1816, the American Colonization Society (ACS) was formed with the aim of resettling free-born and freed black Americans in Africa. The American colony of Liberia was established and in 1822, the ACS began sending immigrants there. According to the African-American Mosaic (Library of Congress), by 1846, the colony had become a “financial burden” and the ACS ordered the Liberians to proclaim their independence. The Republic of Liberia was declared on 7/26/1846. Joseph Jenkins Roberts was elected as its first president. He was born a free man on 3/15/1809 in Norfolk, VA. (Both 7/26 and 3/15 are Liberian national holidays.)

This list of Liberian presidents shows where they were born and that the first Liberian-born president was Hilary R. W. Johnson, elected in 1884. He was born in Monrovia on 6/1/1837. His parents were both born in America.

Eesha crossed out Canada in favor of the Philippines. She bet and lost it all.

Shriya went with Canada. She bet and lost it all, too.

Ryan went south with Mexico. He lost his $9,601 bet so he ended up winning the game with $1,599. As Alex said, that guarantees him at least $25,000 as one of the finalists.

I was just reading some comments on Jeopardy!’s Facebook page complaining about the “Canada” answers with the complainants interpreting that as meaning the kids think Canada gained its independence from the U.S. idk if that means these folks think Liberia gained its independence from the U.S., but now I’m not sure if I made it clear in the information above that Liberia declared itself independent from the ACS.

Here’s an article on PBS Frontline that makes it clear, where it says in one part: “Although it was useful to the United States, Liberia was never a U.S. possession. Before those first settlers had even set foot on Scherbo Island, the colonists had signed a constitution granting the American Colonization Society the authority to govern the colony.”

Given the way FJ! played out, seems possible that Shriya’s Alaskan/Alaska DD miss ended up costing her the game,. assuming RYan would have wagered it all if not in the lead and Shriya wager the minimum shutout bet

  3. Jocelyn Foreacre says:

I am guessing the tie breaker is Friday

  4. Judy says:

So what would have happened if all 3 bet everything and nobody gets it right?

    • VJ says:

@Judy, these 3 contestants would have been eliminated altogether. This actually happened in a Teen Tournament back in February of 2013. There is a YouTube video of it and Alex explains the rules near the end — they will pick the third finalist from the highest score among non-winners.

      • aaaaa says:

seems to be it was reported on Jboard that a three way zero tie in a tourney semi-final game now will be decided by a tiebreaker clue.

  5. kathy Gauker says:

That was a really difficult final. I honestly didn’t even understand it!

  6. rhonda says:

I can’t get over that no one recognized Mick Jagger, I sure am old! Even with Keith Richards name given a hint!

    • VJ says:

lol Rhonda, that was extremely funny. Perhaps the teens have never seen those two in such good shape. It sounded like the audience was giggling to me.

There will be articles on that and Madonna, too.

idk how they expected them to know Kenny Chesney?

      • rhonda says:

Yes, VJ, I thought that the audience was giggling, too. I was surprised they didn’t get Madonna, but I am with you about Kenny Chesney. How in the world would they know him?
Remember how I got him mixed up with Lyle Lovett lol?

      • aaaa says:

Dress You Up wasn’t her best known 80s song, either. Jagger was in the news this year for his heart procedure; the Gallstones returned to the road last Friday

        • VJ says:

lol. We just came back from the store and when we were there, they were playing “Dress You Up”

    • JP says:

As an additional data point, I don’t think I’d identity either by picture when I was 18 (ten years ago), with or without additional hints.

      • VJ says:

Not even if they had the word “Satisfaction” in the clue?

        • JP says:

Today, yes. As a teenager, no.

I think I would have known The Rolling Stones from “Satisfaction”, but I wouldn’t have been able to name any members of the band.

I don’t know if that is more a reflection of me or my age group.

That means I wouldn’t have been able to understand this joke by Norm MacDonald either.

        • VJ says:

lol, JP! That is particularly funny today when they had that $600 clue in the As & Ds category: “In a children’s song, it comes between “knick knack” & “give the dog a bone”

        • JP says:

Ha, I had no idea. That’s quite the coincidence.

I’ve found that joke is hysterically funny or the least funny joke ever, depending on the person. I’m definitely in the hysterically funny group.

        • VJ says:

I’m in the hysterically funny group on that, too.

I had my 4-year-old granddaughter sitting here playing me music videos today. She wanted to learn the words to Pop Goes the Weasel. After that I told her to play Knick Knack Paddy Whack because of that clue. But she refused (“I don’t wike that song”). Instead she made me find her a Spanish children’s song that she knows “La Vaca Lola” and demanded that I sing along. I don’t know Spanish so I winged it but my daughter and I looked up the words later and used google translate to get the pronunciation. Now we are so ready for the next time. Moo!

  7. Dal Higbee says:

The tiebreaker in the Teen Tournament happened in 2014, when Jeff Xie won.

  8. William Weyser says:

This is the 1st time that an 8th grader wins a game in the JEOPARDY! Teen Tournament, the 1st time that an 8th grader makes it to the Finals of the Teen Tournament, and the 2nd time that somebody from South Dakota makes it to the Finals of a tournament. The 1st time was Eric Newhouse, from Vermillion, South Dakota at the time, and he made it to the Finals of the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament, where by $1, he finished in 2nd place, and received $100,000. Anyways, congratulations, Ryan, and I’m looking forward to seeing you in the Finals, against Lucas & tomorrow’s winner, whether it will be Avi Gupta, Teagan O’Sullivan or Jackson Jones.

    • Jacob ska says:

Actually I’m glad to see an 8th grader make it to the finals in the Teen Tournament. This is an exciting Teen Tournament imo.

  9. VJ says:

Well, that was quite something. Not talking about the FJ results, but Eesha having the lead and losing it on the very last “Saurus” clue (it’s on the triple stumper list). Can’t help wondering if she would have gone all in if that had not happened.

  10. aaaa says:

Oh to be able to win a game just on the triple stumpers during a tourney, including the missed DD and FJ!…..

  11. Lou says:

Well this was a tough one, but at least Ryan made it as a Finalist. So now, we will see who will join the gentlemen in tomorrow’s game. I might think we could see a tie breaker tomorrow or thursday. Also I don’t see any canadian presidents ever getting elected here since the contestants were a bit off VJ. Overall I’d say today’s game was good.

  12. Richard Corliss says:

The tiebreaker will be either on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

    • JP says:

I don’t think it will happen on Thursday, being the first day in the two-day final; there’s nothing to tie-break yet, so I’d think they’d just carry over the same amount into the second game. The chances of a tie at the end of the two-day final seems incredibly unlikely, so I’m guessing the tie breaker is tomorrow.

  13. Kevin Cheng says:

That final Jeopardy was a tough one for all 3 players but in the end, Ryan wins today with $1,599. That means he’s coming back on Thursday and Friday to play for $100,000. So far we have two gentlemen in the finals, who will be the third finalist? We’ll find out tomorrow.

  14. Richard Corliss says:

They can only get $25,000 if one of the finalists finishes in third place on Friday.
