WHAT IS THE JABBERWOCK?

“Jabberwocky” is the title of a poem by Lewis Carroll, one of the most famous nonsense poems in the English language. The fearsome creature in the poem is the Jabberwock and, as you can see, the title has 11 letters and the name of the creature has 10. Jabberwock translates to “the fruit of much excited discussion”, or the “result” as today’s FJ! clue puts it. The poem appeared in “Through the Looking-Glass”, Carroll’s sequel to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” (1865).

You can read “Jabberwocky” on aliceinwonderland.net, where they also provide explanations of the word meanings, including this breakdown of Jabberwock: “the Anglo-Saxon word ‘wocer’ or ‘wocor’ signifies ‘offspring’ or ‘fruit’. Taking ‘jabber’ in its ordinary acceptation of ‘excited and voluble discussion’, this would give the meaning of ‘the result of much excited and voluble discussion’.” (Collingwood 274)

Bridget went with the poem’s title, Jabberwocky. With a zero bet, that cost her nothing and she stayed at $3,300.

Michael got it right. He wagered $10,000 and doubled his score to $20,000.

Sandy came up with hullabaloo. She didn’t bet anything since she already won the game with $21,000. Sandy Olive is the new Jeopardy! champion.

One of my favorite quotes from the show The big bang theory. [Sheldon is going on and on about scientific babble to Penny].

Penny: Even you have to admit that’s jibber jabber
Sheldon: Do you know where the term jibber jabber come from?
Penny: OMG, you’re about to jibber jabber about jibber jabber.

    Classic. 🙂

Too funny. I thought the English teacher would get fj correct and Michael would not. Just the opposite happened. I love Jeopardy. 😂

  3. Lou says:

Great job to Sandy on her win as she and michael were quick on the buzzer since Bridget couldn’t catch up to them. As a fan of Alice in wonderland, jabberwocky definitely was in my wheelhouse. I think coming up with the title won’t count it against them in final

What do you mean that someone just lost their gratuity?

      • Richard Corliss says:

It means Bridget’s money was lost on that Daily Double.

Oh I see, it looks like that Bridget and Sandy are going to have a real challenge with each other but then the next few minutes changed dramatically.

Oh no! We got another loser! Oh well, though. I like Sandy, too! She is just so enjoyable and independent! Does anyone agree here?
