Final Jeopardy: Before They Were President (9-13-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/13/2018) in the category “Before They Were President” was:

On Oct. 4, 1940, for the premiere of what’s been called his most famous movie role, Ronald Reagan was in this city

New champ Kyle Jones, a music teacher from Aurora, CO, won $28,401 yesterday. In Game 2, his challengers are : Shawn Moore, a regional human resources manager from Miami, FL; and Lauren Stripling, a teaching artist from New York, NY.

Round 1 Categories: At 35 – Same First & Last Letter – Bad Folks in Books – I Got a Fever – The Only Prescription – More Cowbell

Kyle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “I Got a Fever” under the $600 clue, with 7 clues to go after it. He was in the lead with $5,000, $1,400 ahead of Shawn in second place. He bet $2,000 and went with “money.” That was WRONG.

Random House defines this “fever” as “greed and excitement caused by” it & dates the term to the 1840s. show

Shawn finished in the lead with $4,400. Lauren was second with $3,800 and Kyle was last with $3,200.

Round 2 Categories: Ancient Bro-mans – Principles – Novel Actors – Contractions – Arts & Culture – Place Holders

Shawn found the first Daily Double in “Arts & Culture” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick. He was in the lead with $5,600 now, $1,400 more than Lauren in second place. He bet $1,600 and guessed the Rockies. That was WRONG.

He had nothing to do with the title, but Aaron Copland said, “I’ve begun to see the” mountains “myself” on hearing this piece. show

Kyle found the last Daily Double in “Contractions” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues left after it. In second place with $9,600, he had $4,000 less than Shawn’s’ lead. Before he bet, a reversal (see below) dropped Lauren to $3,800. Kyle bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

A 2015 book says for over 200 years, this word “has been knocking at the door of standard English” but is still shunned. show

Kyle finished in the lead with $16,800. Shawn was next with $12,000 and Lauren was in third place with $3,400. Before FJ, another reversal (see below) brought Lauren up to $6,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SOUTH BEND (INDIANA)?

From the Notre Dame Football History website: “On Oct. 4, 1940, the movie ‘Knute Rockne All American’ opened its world premiere at all four downtown South Bend theatres… Thousands of local residents swarmed Michigan Avenue to get a glimpse of the assembled Hollywood stars, including the leading roles Pat O’Brien (Coach Rockne), Gale Page (Bonnie Rockne), Ronald Reagan (George Gipp), and Donald Crisp (Rev. John Cavanaugh, C.S.C.) along with Reagan’s wife Jane Wyman, Bob Hope, Irene Harvey, Allan Jones, and others.”

The article also says that “Reagan traded on his role as ‘The Gipper’ for the rest of his acting and political career.” Jeopardy has had several nickname clues about Reagan on both “The Gipper” and “Dutch.”

Lauren was close with Indianapolis but she still lost her all-in bet, leaving her with nada.

Shawn went with Iwo Jima, a 1949 war movie Reagan was not in. He lost $8,000, for a $4,000 finish.

Kyle came up with Dallas. He lost $7,201, but won the game with the remaining $9,599. That gives Kyle a 2-day total of $38,000.

Final Jeopardy (9/13/2018) Kyle Jones, Shawn Moore, Lauren Stripling

Reversals: ARTS & CULTURE ($2000) In a Delibes ballet, Dr. Coppelius is a toymaker & the title character Coppelia is one of these. – Alex accepted “marionette” but the judges said Coppelia was a mechanical doll. Lauren was docked $4000.

CONTRACTIONS ($1600) Don’t confuse a 5-letter possessive pronoun with this contraction, its homophone – Alex said it was “whose” after rejecting “your” from Shawn and “their” from Lauren, who was correct. She gained $3200 before FJ.

A triple stumper from each round:

I GOT A FEVER ($800) In a snack food ad “We got the fever for the flavor of a” this

ANCIENT BRO-MANS – ($1600) Bro, I know your hungover, so let’s go sweat it out at the baths named for this emperor who ruled until 217.

During the journey, Dante encounters Homer, Socrates & Cicero, who bide their time in the first circle, aka this. show

I thought it was a final Jeopardy. The statement that Reagan’s most famous role is in Knute Rockne, All American may be arguable, but it’s not a fact, rather it’s an opinion. And the wording ” what’s been called his most famous movie role…” well his role in King’s Row has also been so described. As Chris “Mad Dog” Russo would say- “Bad job!”

Oh dear, we started the week with three consecutive Triple Solve, now it halted with a Triple Stumper. I guess all three are TOO YOUNG to remember that film, especially the category got them into deep trouble.

  3. Lou says:

Well despite the fact no open got final, how did Kyle mistaken the gold rush with money in that first daily double, VJ? Plus Iwo Jima wasn’t even close, but I guess the contestants are not war film buffs. I used to live in Indiana in the early 1990s but my parents moved a lot since dad changed jobs. Oh well, congrats to Kyle on his second win. I just hope he can close out this week with a third win. By the way, what are your favorite combat movies you saw recently, VJ?

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@Lou, I’m afraid that I am not into war combat movies, and that category AND clue stumped them TOO HARD.

    • VJ says:

I’m not big on war movies, Lou. I did see that film “The Tin Drum” that there was a clue on yesterday and I knew what Oskar stopped doing when he was 3

    The week of extremes continues.
Iwo Jima? RR had bad eyesight and was assigned to the AAF. Never saw combat.
The week will end with the ToC still not having an additional 4 game winner, even if Kyle wins tomorrow. To overtake Kate and knock her off he would have to win 23.801. Congrats to him anyway, despite the wrong answer. At least Dallas (and Indianapolis) have an NFL team.
Looked up a few articles about RR since I am a big fan of his. He was ruggedly handsome I must say!! Even in his later years he was quite distinguished looking.

    • VJ says:

Well, maybe not in his later, later years. One of my kids got an autographed 8×10 of him in the mail, late ’80s or early ’90s, and my first reaction when I saw it was “why does he look like Howdy Doody?”

      • JJ says:

I’m astonished! I have a good friend that is a very prominent doctor/plastic surgeon in the area and a really great guy! He’s also a ND grad thus a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the Irish for life. He once told me that the “Average Joe” on the street had no idea where ND was located and I told him he was nuts! One of, if not THE most recognized universities in the nation?! Of course most people know where it’s located… Maybe he was right!

        Zero for 3?! WOW!

@VJ- and yes, at least Lauren was close. She may have thought that South Bend was too small of a town to hold a premiere?

        • VJ says:

Well, JJ, all I had to do was say “one of us will be right” to guarantee that result! LOL!!

        • JJ says:

Lol VJ… I thought about that as soon as I saw the results! Too funny!

        • John B./I. says:

          @JJ
And I guess it helps too if you are catholic. They were the first college football team to draw my attention when they were on TV and you don’t even have to know too much about college football. The Fighting Irish are a household word, (college) football fan or not!
And they live up to the term “lucky Irish”. How often did they pull out a game with the last play and the game clock jumped to zero ….
Joe Montana was one of their greatest players. I had the privilege to meet him and his family when I worked at the Sheraton Maui and he, his entire family are the nicest people. He could have every reason to be arrogant or have a “look who I am” attitude, but he is down to earth as can be. A regular “Joe” (pun intended….)

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
Once he had progressed Alzheimer’s….that does not help of course. We all “wilt” at some point, some sooner, some later. He was kind of “rugged” handsome in a way, same type as Mitchum was imo. Btw, Mitchum is one of my favorite actors. From time to time I put a DVD on and watch one of his movies or the “Winds of War” series.

I hope the Teen Tournament on November 7-20th is better than the last one.
