WHAT IS A GLITCH?

On Visual Thesaurus, Ben Zimmer relates how the term “glitch” came to be associated with John Glenn and his contribution to “Into Orbit,” the 1962 book jointly written by the Mercury astronauts. “Glenn wrote: Another term we adopted to describe some of our problems was ‘glitch.’ Literally, a glitch is a spike or change in voltage in an electrical circuit which takes place when the circuit suddenly has a new load put on it. You have probably noticed a dimming of lights in your home when you turn a switch or start the dryer or the television set. Normally, these changes in voltage are protected by fuses. A glitch, however, is such a minute change in voltage that no fuse could protect against it.” Zimmer traces the word back much farther, with some help from actor Tony Randall.

A year ago: A LITTLE MISTAKE ($600) It rhymes with “hitch” & once meant a hitch caused by a small spike in voltage

Jim wrote down “FUBAR.” (Cue the “contestant makes Alex say” articles). He lost $4,200 and that left him $6,600.

Adrienne got it right. She bet $12,000, bringing her up to $24,700.

E.J. got it, too. He bet $2,601 and won the game with $25,401. His 2-day total is $54,201.

About Jim’s FJ response I forgot to mention that I had just told my daughter what FUBAR stands for earlier this week, either Monday or Tuesday. Funny, because I am usually the one asking her what a lot of shorthand and slang stands for on the internet.

  2. Albert says:

I hate that the media is talking about a showdown between Jennings and Holzhauer, especially when Brad Rutter completely dominated Jennings the very last time Rutter and Jennings played in the All Stars show. I think it is extremely unfair that Rutter is being ignored, especially when Rutter is probably the best of the trio. I can’t be the only who feels this way.

    • VJ says:

You’re not the only one, Albert.

      • JJ says:

Hasn’t Brad Rutter defeated Ken Jennings every time they’ve competed against each other? I think the “thing” that Rutter has lost to was IBM’s “Watson”?

    • Jacob ska says:

@Albert, I agree with you 100%. Can’t figure why Brad is left out of the discussion.

    • Howard says:

There’s been PLENTY of discussion about a 3-way match, especially on the Facebook page for former J contestants.

  3. Cocoa says:

VJ, I read the spoiler before the game every day. Love it. I like watching the process of how the winner gets there. My husband would kill me if I told him who wins. People think I am crazy, but it works for me. Thanks.

  4. AD says:

VJ, why do you do a spoiler on Jeopardy every single day? It just doesn’t work because people like watching the show!

    • VJ says:

AD, if it doesn’t work for you, the real question is why are you even visiting the site?

      • Aiden D. says:

I visit it every day after Jeopardy airs to look at and remember what happened on Jeopardy every day.

  5. Lou says:

Well a great play by the contestants. At least EJ managed to make a comeback today after missing the daily doubles yesterday. Congrats to ej on winning again and to Adrienne on getting final right. Although I can’t say EJ Will have James’s playing style, but VJ do you think he learned from watching James?

    • VJ says:

As I have said Lou, I don’t pay that much attention to comparing the contestants’ styles, but I don’t expect many players to be making those huge bets that James made. I still think more of them will play the board from bottom to top than pre-James, but today they were pretty much going top to bottom.
