WHO ARE ULYSSES S. GRANT & ROBERT E. LEE?

On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee famously surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the Union Army at Appomattox Courthouse, ending the Civil War. Four years later, Grant was the President of the United States and Lee was president of Washington College in Lexington, Va. Civil War Talk describes how Grant invited Lee to the White House where the two spoke privately for about 15 minutes. No one really knows what they had to say to each other.

From 1988: THE CIVIL WAR ($1,000 DD): Present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, he went on to lose a June 1876 Indian battle

Kevin bet $7,793, bringing him up to $15,593.

Claudia bet $7,201 and gave a shoutout to her 18 grandkids! She finished with $15,601.

James bet an even $50,000. He won the game with $118,816. His 14-day total is $1,061,554. By the end of the week, he may be the only one in the Single-Game Winnings column in Jeopardy!’s Hall of Fame.

I love his intelligence, he’s mensa material

I love James! Not only is he incredibly intelligent, he is also handsome and very polite.

  3. Judith Palmer says:

I’d like to see James on the Millionaire !
He is such a calm, cool player!
l look forward to Jeopardy each night.
How can one man have so much knowledge on so many topics?

    • Albert says:

I read an article about James and he said that he has been studying for years for the show. As a math major in college James must be really smart and sharp also.

    • VJ says:

Well, all the contestants that are currently having the misfortune to be up against him know plenty of the clues that he gets. You can see them trying to buzz in. But James just keeps on plowing through the board and even when they get to the top rows, he doesn’t let up.

Everybody on the panel usually knows the clues in the first two rows. That $400 clue in “Rock” in this game was one of the exceptions. (I didn’t know it but my daughter would).

As was said earlier, some of these clues are really easy. However, the game is up on J-Archive already if you want to go look and see what clue he knew that you didn’t.

James got all the clues in “Talking Dead.” I only got 4 of them (didn’t get Lovecraft).

I didn’t get any of the 3 triple stumpers

  4. Bob Chang says:

James could lose like Ken did in his 75th game but I see most likely he happens to finally lose a DD in Double Jeopardy leaving him with a small lead going to FJ because his opponent is really good (highly unlikely Jame’s behind). It’s a tough FJ no one gets and he loses because he wagers too much, while 2nd place wagers conservative and not everything, figuring they either both know the answer and he cab’t win, or they both don’t know it and he can win with a conservative bet

The promo suggest to me he loses before he gets to $2 million, because otherwise he wouldn’t be in a tournament. but the tournament winning are enough to bring him over $2 mil. I read earlier there’s a max of 62 games James could win before the next tournament, but if he didn’t lose before 62 games he’d be about $4.7 million at his current rate

    • John Christian Ambion says:

He would lose IF and only IF he surpassed Ken Jennings’ 74-game run.

  5. Albert says:

I feel that ‘Overeaters Anonymous’ was waaaaay tooooo easy for a $1,600 DD. For a $1,600 DD the question should be much harder than ‘Overeaters Anonymous’.

  6. John Christian Ambion says:

That is, to say, one of the easiest FJ in James’ tenure as a champion, and that HUGE wager made him a millionaire, unlike Ken Jennings’ who in his game where he reached the million-dollar mark, it was a toughie. Speaking of toughie, Easter bombing in Sri Lanka, a 6.5 earthquake in Luzon, and yesterday, a 6.1 earthquake in Visayas, three straight days of unconventional disaster right here in the middle of James’ winning streak. I hope he visits both of the countries and send even a small amount to donate.

  7. Gary says:

That was one of the easiest FJs they’ve had in a long time.

  8. VJ says:

My favorite clue today was in the Rhyming Phrases about the brown cow. I read that to my daughter and she knew it right away because I say that a lot as a greeting. 😃

  9. Lou says:

Well I am happy that James reached the million dollar mark but still he had so many runaways its off the charts. I am happy all got the triple solve today. At this rate, if he keeps winning like this, he could get to 2 million or close to it. This just stuns me to no end. I bet Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter will be more than happy to have him in the next battle of the decades later on. I think all the contestants here must have been well read on The Red Badge of Courage based on the Civil War.

  10. Richard Corliss says:

I still think James is gonna go to $2 million dollars, like the promo said.

  11. William Weyser says:

Good News: I’m very happy that James Holzhauer is a millionaire, with a grand total of $1,061,554.
Bad News: I’m getting a little bit tired of James’ runaways, and I think James has had a runaway in every single game that he has played so far, except for his 2nd game.

    • Richard Corliss says:

So am I. He’ll never make it to the Tournament of Champions if he comes on next season.

    • JJ says:

I could be mistaken, but I think that Ken Jennings had a streak of 28, give or take, runaway games in a row during his reign. What’s amazing about this guy is his fearless wagering and the HUGE gobs of money he’s making day in and day out. WOW!

    • VJ says:

Well, I am waiting for the game where they have a hard Final Jeopardy! that no gets and James loses his big FJ! bet but still wins the game.

After that, I don’t care what happens

      • William Weyser says:

Or the game where James trails for the 1st time, and the leader, aka, 1 of his opponents, gets Final Jeopardy! right, wins the game, and defeats James that way. I doubt that it will happen, but it could happen that way. How about that?

        • VJ says:

That can happen after I see him lose over $25K in FJ! and still win the game.

        • Janet says:

He seems to be ensuring his runaways fairly early, then preserving them despite big (for mortals) DD bets
