Final Jeopardy: American Music Legends (6-6-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/6/2019) in the category “American Music Legends” was:

Steinbeck called him “just a voice and a guitar” but said his songs embodied “the will of a people to endure and fight against oppression”

3x champ Emma Boettcher, a user experience librarian from Chicago, IL, has now won $97,002. In Game 4, she is up against: Brendan Roach, a policy researcher advisor from Cambridge, MA; and Salomé Gonstad, a freelance writer from Hanceville, AL.

Brendan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Business Names” under the $1,200 clue on the first pick after the chat. He was in second place with $2,800, $400 less than Salomé in the lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Brendan finished in the lead with $19,200. Emma was next with $19,000 and Salomé was in third place with $16,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS WOODY GUTHRIE?

The full John Steinbeck quote (which you can see here) ends with the words “I think we call this the American spirit.” The Dust Bowl and the American Spirit are such strong connections between Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” and Guthrie’s songs that they continued to be honored to this day. Woody’s son, Arlo, often brings up the topic in his own concerts. Steinbeck’s son, Thomas, participated in a 2008 festival honoring John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie and the American spirit.

FJ from 2/16/2005: SINGERS: This man who often criticized the government was named for the president elected in 1912, his birth year

Salomé got it right. She bet it all and finished with $32,800.

Emma had Bob Dylan, but crossed it out for A. Guthrie, Woody’s son Arlo. She lost her $13,801 bet, leaving her with $5,199.

Brendan got it right, too. He bet $19,000 and won the game with $38,200. Brendan Roach is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I know that people are gonna be a little upset that the ”James vs. Emma” Rematch is not happening, but I can think of 2 people who are happy that Emma lost today. 1. James Holzhauer, although I’m not quite too sure about that. 2. Dave Leffler, because with Emma losing her 4th game, and as a result, not making it to the Tournament Of Champions, Dave is safe, and can now breath a deep sigh of relief.

Emma Boettcher will compete in the next 2019 Tournament of Champions, according to Jimmy from the Clue Crew this morning. Check out this link

      • Richard Corliss says:

How can she be? She didn’t win four, five times or more.

        • VJ says:

@Richard, she can be because Jeopardy! said she can be. Do me a favor and put any more comments about this on the 2019 ToC post. I put the video on there already.

Are we really going to ignore the obvious question of how good does James look now? He only earned $ 2.4 million dollars in 30 days Emma unseated him but failed to go more than 3 days. What conclusions can we draw here? I’d say James was pretty darn good. I miss him already. Just like Ken Jennings he is a very special player and we will all look back and wonder just how he did it.

    • Albert says:

Don’t be giving James too much credit. James almost lost a few weeks ago, but his opponent didn’t go all in on his DD. If James’s opponent made it a true DD a few weeks back then James would have lost before breaking Julia Collins’s streak.

What a game, huh? Congrats to Brendan on getting that very last clue in Furniture with the picture of the 4-poster bed, giving him the lead going into FJ and congrats to him and Salomé on getting FJ right.

Woodie Guthrie came into my mind but for Emma to choose Arlo that’s not going to help her. She should have chosen Woodie and would have won. But congratulations to Brendan. Hopefully he can get a run of wins going and I am happy that,Salome got this as well. Seems as though Emma is out of the toc contention since she had two strong opponents today, VJ.

  5. Gary says:

Very easy FJ today. Why would Emma even put a first initial when it wasn’t required? Just think if that had cost her the game (which it wouldn’t have).

    • JP says:

Given that both Woody and Arlo were fairly famous (and both have appeared on the show often), I could see the powers that be requiring the players to distinguish between them in their response. Emma was thinking it was Arlo, thought “Guthrie” would have been ruled incorrect for not being specific, and thought she’s add the ‘A’ to make sure her response would be ruled correct (if it was the correct answer).

Given the inconsistency of the ‘be more specific’ rule, I don’t know if we can say for sure that “Guthrie” by itself would have been accepted, and we probably will never know.

      • VJ says:

I agree that we’ll never know, JP, but I don’t see how they could have accepted just Guthrie.

  6. JP says:

Emma’s initial response of Bob Dylan, along with Willie Nelson, were the two responses that came to my mind, although I knew they were both too recent to be mentioned in a Steinbeck quote.

A bit ironic that Woody Guthrie, who was very friendly towards Communism, would become associated with fighting against oppression. Although, the horrors that inevitably occurred in every Communist country were not yet public knowledge for most of his life, so it would be most charitable to attribute his views to naïveté than anything else.
