WHAT IS THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT?

From “About the Office” on the DOJ website: “The Judiciary Act of 1789 created the Office of the Attorney General which evolved over the years into the head of the Department of Justice and chief law enforcement officer of the Federal Government…. Since the 1870 Act that established the Department of Justice as an executive department of the government of the United States, the Attorney General has guided the world’s largest law office and the central agency for enforcement of federal laws.”

Robert F. Kennedy was the 64th Attorney General of the United States from 1961-1964. The painting by Aaron Shikler that was used in the FJ clue is on RFK’s bio page.

Daniel got it right. He bet it all and doubled his score to $25,600.

Elizabeth drew a blank. She lost her $10,500 bet, leaving her $4,700.

Emily wrote down the State Dept. That cost her $14,201 so she landed in third place with $1,999. Daniel Carden is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Any person on the show should know important facts about the presidents. For jeopardy players I thought Bobby Kennedy being AG was a given.

I mean, the question isn’t about Warren G. Harding or Chester Arthur, but about the most famous family in American politics.

It is amazing what people know and what people don’t know. Also, it is good to know what people actually look like, as the show sometimes will give a photo of the person along with the clue. Remember the photo of Kurt Vonnegut the other day?

  2. Richard Corliss says:

Emily being a Reese Witherspoon fan reminds me of the February 2006 Teen Tournament. Matt Klein from Pittsford, New York, had a crush on Mischa Barton, Jessica Alba, & Anna Paquin. He gets all the good looking actresses, he blushed when Jessica’s photo came up and had a big smile on his face when Mischa’s photo came up causing the audience, Andrew Krietz, Papa Chakravarty and Alex to laugh. Papa Chakravarty from Kentucky rolled his eyes after Matt got the second one right. After Matt got the third one right, the audience applauded after his performance and Andrew and Papa laughed.

I have a list of attorney generals sorted by first name and it says the most common name has been William, there were only 2 named Robert so far, and the most unusual first name was Reverdy (Johnson), AG under Taylor and Fillmore. I couldn’t find any clues on him on J-Archive but I did find 3 for Teddy Roosevelt’s AG, Charles Bonaparte (Napoleon’s grandnephew).

Surprised that only one got it right. It WAS almost 50 years ago, but then this is one of those moments where you remember where you were (if you were already alive). Still, the painting is a very good likeness and (at least in Hawaii ) they had/have a series about the Kennedy dynasty on CNN, narrated by Martin Sheen. Sad to say that the Kennedys had some very bad karma (Jack, Robert,John jr.,Michael.) Both fathers and their sons died tragically and way too early.
Again the last before FJ won. Very good score by all 3 before FJ. Congrats Daniel , as well as Jlane and Nell for the foresight to predict one right (I guess you took the generation gap into account??)

    • Nell says:

John, you give me undeserved credit. I predicted two correct. I believe it was Jacob (along with Jlane) who got it right and it was he who mentioned the generation gap. Boy, was he ever on the money with that! Congrats guys!

I’m sorry to see Emily go. I liked that girl.😢

  5. Lee says:

what are you talking about ?

Emily had the lead going into FJ so I don’t know what you talking about she needing to catch up to Daniel and the reason she lost cause she didn’t get FJ right and Daniel did.

  6. Lou says:

Well, Emily had some strong opponents today but in the end, she just wasn’t strong enough to catch up to Daniel. Overall I commend her for winning 45000 dollars so far. This reminded me of Ellen Corrigans fourth game after she lost to pranjal in 2016. Emily could sympathize with Ellen but she put up a valiant effort, right VJ? Let’s hope Daniel wins a streak of games we need the toc list to fill up.

Also what is the difference between justice department and the state department? Do they handle laws for immigration or is it the other way around?

    • John B. says:

State Department is for foreign affairs, what they called in Britain the Foreign Office and is now called The Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The U,s, DoJ in the U.S. is the Attorney General’s Office in Britain.
