TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ATTICUS FINCH?

Attica is a region surrounding Greece’s capital that still exists, although it is larger than it was in ancient times. There are two responses from educators on eNotes on why Harper Lee chose the name Atticus for her “To Kill a Mockingbird” attorney based partly on her own father, Amasa Lee. One suggests the inspiration was Roman noble Titus Pomponius Atticus to establish “a link between Atticus and an early tradition of law.” The other mentions that the oratory skills of Greek sophist Herodes Atticus may have been a factor. As for the choice of Finch, that was Harper Lee’s mother’s maiden name.

From 2004: EUROPEAN CAPITALS ($800) This capital lies on the Attica Plain surrounded by mountains including Parnes & Hymettus

Hannah had an incomplete response that began with “Aq”. She lost $4,000 and was left with $1,000.

Lorelle got it right. She bet $5,300 for a $10,700 finish.

James got it, too. He bet $60,013 and broke his own highest one-day record with a $131,127 win. Now he has the Top 4 single game paydays. It’s just wild to be able to bet $60K+ on FJ! and know you will still win even if you’re wrong, ain’t it? His 10-day total is $697,787!

Final Jeopardy (4/17/2019) James Holzhauer, Hannah Pierson-Compeau, Lorelle Anderson

I was just looking at the FJ part of this game and realized that Hannah actually started writing “aQ” not “aa”, so she was likely thinking of the Latin prefix “aquil” (like an eagle).

Sorry about that, Hannah! I fixed it in the recap.

  2. Greg says:

James missed a real easy (my opinion) question last night, one it seemed like only a young person would miss. Can anyone remind me what it was?

  3. Billy says:

the champs response to Tammy’s song was “stand by HER man” not “stand by YOUR man” and the judges said nothing – others who got one word wrong in a song title response were penalized – if his answer was judged incorrect he would have gone into final with $21+K not $71+K and could not have made such a large bet and broken another record.

  4. aaaa says:

They have paid out about three times as much money in the last ten days ($727K counting the $30K in consolation money they pay out to the non-winners) as on an average ten day period(non-TofC or other reunion tourney)

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

Well, someone disturbed the peace on Maundy Thursday, and his name is JAMES HOLZHAUER. He’s done it again. He made over $100,000 in winnings. NOT ONE. NOT TWICE. BUT THREE TIMES. And guess what? HE. SHATTERED. THE. NEW. ONE-DAY. RECORD. I’m speechless, I’m in shock. This is a very EASY Final Jeopardy, but he wagered like a MONSTER UNLEASHED. Oh my goodness, what can I say? Alex Trebek’s jaws are dropped, and all of you witnessed another slice of history.

James, you said that your game was dedicated to your grandma. Well, you did. In 10 games, he won almost $700,000. In the very immortal words of the Titans, James Holzhauer has RELEASED THE KRAKEN. Hope you all have fun on this very peaceful Maundy Thursday, for you all have witnessed one of the greatest games Jeopardy! has ever played.

P.S. Alex Trebek, thank you for not only creating Ken Jennings, but also the millennial champion, James Holzhauer. If there’s one antidote to recover you quickly, it’s that professional sports gambler who keeps on whopping the contestants’ asses, risky wagers on DD, and your speechless reactions of him. Good luck and here’s to Season 36 on September.

In Rocky III Mr.T. (he played Clubber Lang, fighting against Rocky) said: “I pity the fool!!”

  6. klm says:

Something fishy is going on. No way anyone could’ve known the responses to the “brain trust” and “stand by your man” DDs. There’s just no way. I ask the smart people who contribute here: did any of you know the responses to both those DDs?
    No, right?
And in the previous days, too, there were some really tough DDs. I’ve never seen past contestants come up with responses to really tricky DDs.
Something fishy is going on, and the cat will be out of the bag soon. Remember, you heard it here first from klm.

    • VJ says:

well, yeah, klm, I got them… google brain trust and FDR to see just how closely associated they are.

And that was one of Tammy Wynette’s biggest hits, if not THE biggest. Back when the Bill Clinton / Monica scandal broke, Hillary went on TV and said she wasn’t some little woman standing by her man like the Tammy Wynette song, and she had to apologize to Wynette for that dumb remark. Wynette’s other well-known hit, ironically, is D-I-V-O-R-C-E

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
Sorry, didn’t see your post. Automatically answered klm….sort of duplicated you, though with different words.

        • VJ says:

Well, klm did ask everyone who got it to chime in but idk where you get that Wynette said she wrote it with Hillary in mind — Stand By Your Man came out in the late 1960s. I know I had never heard of the Clintons then and I doubt if Wynette had either

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
Got it wrong, of course it was released much earlier. In one of her last interviews I saw Tammy mentioned something like Hillary should stand by Bill and you know the rest. Has been (still is) a rather very hectic day for me and you know I have a tendency to jump the gun……I knew there was a connection between this song and Bill’s affair, just mixed it up. I guess senility might start to creep up….LOL

    • John B./I. says:

      @KLM
Actually, I DID know both answers.
      1. I am a country and western fan, from Jim Reeves to what have you. And “Stand by your man” was the logical choice .( She released it when Bill Clinton had his affair with Lewinsky become public and Wynette said she wrote the song with Hillary on her mind).
      2. I am also a history buff, FDR is my favorite President, period. I have seen dozens and dozens of hours of documentaries, read books about him etc, plus I am old enough to consider that still sort of my generation history, at least I was affected by the outcome of WWII. Same with Churchill. Ask me the strangest question about Sir Winston and I’ll probably know it. (I was born 1947).
What I D O find a little “coincidental” is that James finds over 2/3 of the DDs. I mentioned it before, but if the TV viewers would be able to see WHERE the DDs are before a round: no manipulation possible! J! might, just MIGHT pick weaker players for James, though it is all supposed to be guaranteed “random”…….

    • AM says:

Eh, I got both of them and I’m a millennial who doesn’t listen to country. I didn’t know that Tammy Wynette wrote “Stand By Your Man,” but it was clear from the category title that the right response would have the word “man” in it – and, I figured, what other country song that met that criterion would require a lifetime to defend? But that’s J! for you: often it’s less about knowing facts than it is about being able to decode the writers’ hints.

    • rhonda says:

I got both DD’s as well, I didn’t find them all that difficult.
I don’t find it odd that James finds most of the DD’s, Alex even spoke about it tonight.
      Go James!!

      • VJ says:

agreed, Rhonda, of course he’s going to find most of the DD’s when he’s answering most of the clues.

And I knew you would get that song. Did you ever see the movie about Tammy’s life story and her marriage to George Jones? The one thing I remember the most from that movie was how she hid ol’ George’s car keys so he couldn’t go into town to get some booze, so he took off on the tractor, hell bent for leather!

        • rhonda says:

I”m not much of a country music fan, VJ, but that one is a classic.
I’ve never seen that movie, I will have to look it up, thanks.

        • VJ says:

It was a 1981 film, Rhonda, and the name of it was “Stand by Your Man” (of course! lol)

Even though I am mainly a sixties rock girl, I grew up listening to all kinds of music, listening to the standards and folk songs, etc. and my parents were always singing old songs they knew as kids. They used to put on Johnny Mathis and Harry Belafonte for us to go to sleep to. Then, after they broke up, my stepfather used to play country music a lot. He would say “a little Tubbs,” and put on “Walking the Floor Over You” so I got to know a bunch from that genre 😉

    • klm says:

thanks, everyone, for your responses. i guess the dds only seemed really tough to me :(.
but i do have another prediction to make: with this guy’s departure, J! will fade out quite quickly (something that would’ve happened with Trebek’s exit, but will happen much quicker now because ratings will drop drastically).
and i do wish i could see these games..but no cable tv sadly…when will J! evolve and put the show online. they say some select shows are on Netflix, but getting Netflix just to watch old shows makes no sense. There’s J Archive and old episodes on Youtube for that.

      • Albert says:

Jeopardy will be on and still be hugely popular long after Trebek is gone.

      • VJ says:

klm, of course, James’ run has drawn people who don’t ordinarily watch the show to tune in and see what all the hubbub is about, and they will go away when his run is over. But the show has a solid base of loyal viewers who know that every game is not going to have a ToC player in it and watch faithfully every day all the same.

And also, people know that James will be back after his run for more than one tournament, just like Buzzy, Alan and Austin have already been in 2 tournaments. (I mention them specifically because they were the most recent finalists in a ToC)

      • Les says:

This isn’t James first game show, he “crushed” the Beast on the “CHASE” a couple years ago, and played that game the same way…all out!

    • Les says:

My bet is that he has a photographic memory, if you research that phenomenon you find that is some people it triggers something that he just sees the answer.

  7. Trevor Panno says:

I think James’ run will end before he breaks $1,000,000.

    • VJ says:

      I hope not

    • William Weyser says:

Well, there are 2 ways for James to possibly win $1,000,000, and I hope that James does get that $1,000,000.
      1. James makes it to at least $750,000, before his luck runs out, makes it to the Tournament Of Champions, wins the tournament, wins the $250,000 grand prize, and wins a grand total of $1,000,000.
      2. James wins as many games as he can before he wins the $1,000,000.

  8. VJ says:

Whatta game… Whatta man… lol!! (that last one was a clue response today). James showed today he doesn’t need to get every DD to rack up the dough. With a $40K bet in FJ yesterday and $60K+ today, he’s at the stage where he’s won enough that he doesn’t really care if they throw out a monster FJ – it’s all about the Benjamins — or maybe I should say the Grovers! 🤣

  9. John B./I. says:

I really don’t know what to say. Is James T H A T good or is J picking opponents who are not necessarily in the highest percentile of qualifying players????We had only 2 left for FJ on the 10th and yesterday…… twice in 6 games. Does usually not happen that often. And James is not just defeating them, he is annihilating them..He’s also incredibly lucky finding the DDs , way above average percentage!
Either way, CONGRATULATIONS for win # 10!

  10. Lou says:

Man James is Just too much. Playing like a pro and whatnot. With nearly 700K in winnings, he already passed Arthur chu. I wonder why Hannah went with Aa, what was she going for with that response John and VJ? What can I say, James will go for his 11th game but I am thinking his winnings speaks for itself. I’m thinking he could reach a million hopefully by Friday.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Idk, the peninsula Athens is located on is Attica, hence it’s a “surrounding” district. Maybe she had Attica somewhere back in her mind???

  11. aaaa says:

If James wins the rest of the season, he’ll have 62 wins. 20 of the remaining shows of this season are the Teacher’s tourney and another Teen tourney

  12. Dal Higbee says:

I’m really getting tired of James Holzhauer (already)!

    • Richard Corliss says:

      Me too.

      • William Weyser says:

Yesterday, I jokingly told my mom & dad that James Holzhauer & Roger Craig hate each other. Not true, but this hate has been happening since James’ 4th game. Now, after James set ANOTHER new 1-day record of $131,127, this hate has been stretched out even further.

        • John Christian Ambion says:

And they can’t get over it. Either they are delusional or whining in agony. James Holzhauer is the REAL thing, and I pity them because a wise man say, “I pity the fool.” I pity against anyone who did nothing but spewing hate on James.

        • William Weyser says:

John, I have heard of ”I Pity The Fool” before, and I’m sure that the hate between James Holzhauer & Roger Craig is not true.

  13. Richard Corliss says:

I think his winning streak will end on November 30th.
