WHAT IS 1963?

In 1963, American writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin published “The Fire Next Time”, a book that contained two essays. Both essays (“My Dungeon Shook: Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation” and “Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region of My Mind”) were written earlier and published in different magazines in 1962.

“My Dungeon Shook” is essentially a letter to his teenage nephew, counseling him while outlining the challenges Baldwin’s namesake faces as a black man in an American society that wants to keep him down. The essay’s title comes from this passage: “You come from a long line of poets, some of the greatest poets since Homer. One of them said, The very time I thought I was lost, my dungeon shook and my chains fell off.” Baldwin concludes with the quote in today’s clue.

Sean thought it was 1876. He lost $1,201 and finished with $5,999.

Deb had 1976, but bet nothing for a second place finish of $8,400.

Troy got it right and also bet zero. Troy alreaady had the game in the bag. The field for the semifinals is now complete and the games begin tomorrow.

I never noticed Troy in a chair before. His win was monster.

I got very, very few of the TS. That means either one or zero!

Didn’t get FJ. Didn’t even have a clue.

Methinks we have an early favorite to win the championship. What a performance. But there are so many variables.

It would have been easy to fall into the 1876/1976 trap, but I knew the year of the Emancipation Proclamation and that the Baldwin novel was a big deal in the early ’60s.

Barely recalled the name of the Carey Mulligan movie. It was offbeat but pretty good.

  3. Kevin Cheng says:

I think you got the positions for the second and third place at the end of DJ! mixed up. Anyway, 38,400 is the highest score we seen in the quarterfinals. We began this field with 27 players but now we’re down to 9 players and the semifinals begin tomorrow.
