Final Jeopardy: The Old West (11-30-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/30/2018) in the category “The Old West” was:

On Oct. 27, 1881 this town’s local newspaper reported on “a day when blood flowed as water”

2x champ Adriana Ciccone, a data scientist from San Francisco, CA, won $35,601 so far. In Game 3 and the last game of the week, her challengers are: Elizabeth Goss, a housewife from Pleasant Ridge, MI; and Ben Goldstein, an attorney from Los Angeles, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Cities Across America – Medical AKAs – Watching the TV Detectives – Car / Maker – Electoral College Cudgelings – I Got Nothing

Adriana found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Medical AKAs” under the $400 clue on the 8th pick of the round. She was in second place with $800, $1,000 less than Ben’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

WHAT IS TOMBSTONE?

October 27, 1881 was the day after the gunfight at the O.K. Corral between the Earps and the cowboys, the inspiration for many books, films and TV shows. The Tombstone Nugget proclaimed October 26, 1881 as “a day when blood flowed as water … always to be remembered as witnessing the bloodiest and deadliest street fight that has ever occurred in this place, or probably in the Territory.” You can read the entire article and others on Deadwoodsdnow blogspot. There’s also a good O.K. Corral article on Seeker that describes what life in Tombstone was really like back then.

A 1997 clue: U.S. HISTORY ($300) After the 1881 gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Virgil Earp lost his job as this city’s marshall

Adriana didn’t have a response. She lost $3,201 and finished with $2,599.

Ben thought it was Dodge City. That cost him $10,000. He was left with $1,400.

Elizabeth went with Dodge City, too. She lost $9,001 but the $4,799 she retained won her the game. Elizabeth Goss is the new Jeopardy! champ.

The category was cities across America. South Beach is a neighborhood of the city of MiamiBeach

  2. Jd says:

Since when is south beach a city

    • Lou says:

Have you ever heard of the South Beach diet? Joe Fontana used that as a quote in one of the Law and order episodes back in season 15..

    • VJ says:

@Jd, this was the clue: “Beautiful people, unique buildings, warm water & white sand epitomize this world-famous Florida neighborhood with a directional name”

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

Ended the week on a Triple Stumper, in the words of a surfer, “Bummer!”

I guess all three didn’t know EXACTLY where did the Battle of the OK Corral took place, but I heard that the Chief in WitUSAiCS? PC game that the gumshoe will go to Arizona because “someone galloped off with the OK Corral.”

Anyway, today is Game 1 of the UAAP Finals between Ateneo and UP. They’re very close in geography, but I don’t know if these players will replicate that gunfight. It’s college basketball, to say the least.

  4. RT81 says:

All Ben had to do was bet 201 to keep Adrianna locked out and he wins on the triple stumper.

    • John B./I. says:

      @RT81
Provided he anticipated a TS. Unlike yesterday, the category did not look to become a TS.
As I said, obviously none of them saw the movie, so “Tombstone” has become an everyday expression. Still can’t believe that everybody missed.
      Have a nice weekend too!

  5. John B./I. says:

    @Lou
Yes, if Ben had copied Adriana’s betting from yesterday….but I guess “The Old West” was not as intimidating as “Catholicism”. And it wasn’t. I knew about Tombstone well before I even saw the movie. Funny name for a town though, where the bullets are buzzing…πŸ˜‰
This time Elizabeth got all 3 DDs but she wasn’t able to take as much advantage of them as Adriana did in the 2 previous games. The two 3K bets canceled each other out.
Had I been Ben I would have wagered just 2.401 to cover the leader, because if s/he is right in general then s/he wins anyway, while with a small bet – even if I’m wrong and in second place- I might win. Depends on the “distance, but would have worked for Ben today. Well, as I said, you can’t win them all. I don’t think I would wager everything myself in such a situation (or almost everything). BUT there are so many betting strategies, different strokes for different folks! I still don’t understand that TS. “Tombstone” has found its way into every day’s vernacular, I hear it so often, it has become almost a proverbial expression.
    Again: go figure…..
Take care as well, Lou. Btw: which neck of the woods are you from, if you don’t mind telling?? Just curious.
Aloha from Maui, just past noon and already 84F/29C and it’s gonna get warmer….still kind of an odd feeling with Xmas approaching, even after all these years.

    • Lou says:

@John, I am glad you asked. I am in the New England area known for its cold weather. Just an hour and a half away from New York. Although it has been warm and cold together so pretty much normal for this time of the year. Also aloha to Doris as well. I wish her well as always. You enjoy the outdoors and be sure to take photos of Hawaii and share it with us when you get a chance. Thanks very much.

      • John B./I. says:

Doris says hello too, I have to leave photos to her, I’m not that computer savvy and of course VJ’s permission. Maybe I can slip one in with Haleakala having a snowcap. Happens every winter, you have a rainstorm down here and it snows up there in Dec/Jan/Feb/. Then it clears up and almost looks like Mt. Fuji. After all it’s over 10K ft or 3K m. high, (Haleakala= house of the sun. Hale = house, aka =one of many forms of “of” and “la” = sun ” in Hawaiian.)
Lahaina , where I live = Land of the cruel/merciless sun. La = sun, aina=land and the “h” indicates another form of “of” but also “cruel” or “merciless” in that combination. Hawaiians refer to the entire state as the “Aina”, the land, their land. Mele Kalikimaka= Merry Christmas, in case you want to sign some cards that way….now you also know Hawaiian!πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„

        • VJ says:

well he doesn’t mean post a photo on this site. Get an instagram or twitter account and post your photos there, then post a link here

  6. John B./I. says:

Well, first of all of course congratulations to Elizabeth for the win, albeit small.
Could really kick myself. As I said in CotD “This could very well be another TS ……cant’t believe we’ll have 2 complete blanks in a row, so I’m going with one”. Should have listened to my gut. It was apparently a generation thing after all. I guess none of the players ever saw the movie. You don’t forget a town where the bullets are buzzing and that is named “Tombstone”. (Like the humor of whoever came up with the pizza slogan!). Ah well, cant win them all. Dodge city was where Earp and Holliday were and came to Tombstone.
Well, I’m getting the he** out of Dodge but not before wishing everybody a great weekend!! Too bad the week ended with 2 complete plops. But there is always next week.
All were tough FJs this week imo except the 2 with the Star Spangled Banner and today, yet one was a sweep and today a bust. Go figure.
Take care y’all and “see” you Monday! Doris also says “hello”, she’s at work.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. Tough clue on Catholicism, tough again on The Old West.

    • TR says:

Even if they never saw the classic, they’re old enough to have seen the 1993(?) film with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Or just to know about the OK Corral in general. Oh well. I’ll figure these contestants out someday πŸ˜‰

  7. Lou says:

So we ended the week with two final jeopardy triple stumpers and one early elimination without a four time winner since mary Ann borer. But this one shouldn’t have been that tough if tWyatt Earp, Morgan and Virgil became obvious to the contestants since the movie came out in 1993 which I am sure John and VJ remember seeing it right? These were gutsy bets but Adriana should know the second time will not work in her favor. Congrats to Elizabeth but I hope she can make up for her low win next week and with easier final jeopardy questions. And if Ben had made a smaller wager he would have won.

    • VJ says:

Wow, this was kind of like Dylan’s third game for Adriana, except she still could have won if she bet zero. Mercy!

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
Another champ just really crashed. One of the attractions of J; If all ifs and buts were candies and nuts we’d all have a merry Christmas….”The Old West” was obviously a tempting category and it WAS easy imo. SSMH…πŸ™„
Perusing through the categories this week I think we all steered clear of being
beaten at the “Clue responses…..” Pretty mild in Houston too, so enjoy the weekend while you still can! Winter will probably come soon and then in a hurry! I wish we had just a couple of days of snow around Xmas…Memories of times long gone by.
