Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS (EVANGELISTA) TORRICELLI?

The sentence in the clue comes from a letter that Evangelista Torricelli wrote to Italian mathematician (and later Cardinal) Michaelangelo Ricci. Torricelli invented the mercury barometer. From YourDictionary.com: “Torricelli had repeated Galileo’s experiments with the thermoscope and was led to his discovery when he substituted mercury for water in the tube. He found also that water could be used as the liquid in the barometer if the containing vessel was sufficiently long… and he realized that the column of liquid was held up by the pressure of the atmosphere.

Gilbert went with Bernoulli. He didn’t bet anything so he remained at $12,600.

Lindsey wrote down Avogadro. She lost $4,601 and finished with $12,799.

Francois got it right. He bet $12,801 and won the last finalist spot with $34,801. And there you go — the battle for the $250,000 Tournament of Champions prize will be fought over the next two games between Emma Boettcher, James Holzhauer and Francois Barcomb.
