Final Jeopardy: Presidential History (3-27-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/27/2020) in the category “Presidential History” was:

He was the first President to deliver the State of the Union address on television

New champ Susan Alden, a fundraising researcher from San Francisco, CA, won $7,999 yesterday. In Game 2, she is up against: Matt Steen, an account coordinator from Minneapolis, MN; and Khalilah Walters, an attorney from Danville, VA.

Round 1 Categories: 150 Years of Nature – Demography – Ordinal Terms – Here’s the Windup – And the Pitch – It’s a Strike

Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Demography” under the $600 clue, with 9 clues to go after it. He was in second place with $1,600, $1,800 behind Susan’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “Z”. That was WRONG.

Born between 1980 & 1995, millenials are aka “Generation” this letter. show

Susan finished in the lead with $4,800. Khalilah was second with $400 and Matt was last, at zero.

Round 2 Categories: Starring the San Diego Zoo – Latin Phrases – Opera – The “General” Economy – State Capitals – Author Fill-ins

Khalilah found the first Daily Double in “State Capitals” under the $800 clue on the 4th pick. She was in the lead with $2,000 now, $800 more than Susan in second place. She made it a true Daily Double and thought it was New Mexico. That was WRONG.

Appropriately, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is in the capital of this western state. show

On the very next pick, Khalilah snagged the last Daily Double in “Latin Phrases” under the $2,000 clue. She was in second place with zero now, $1,200 less than Susan’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

John Wilkes Booth shouted this, meaning “thus always to tyrants”, as he leaped to the stage after shooting Abraham Lincoln. show

Khalilah finished in the lead with $6,800. Matt was next with $5,600 and Susan was in third place with $1,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HARRY S. TRUMAN?

Harry S. Truman, the 33rd U.S. President, delivered the first televised State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress in the House Chamber on 1/6/1947. Actually, it was also the first State of the Union address. Prior to that the annual message on the nation’s state of affairs was called… wait for it… the “Annual Message”.

The History section on the House of Representatives website has a chart with notable televised proceedings, and on the sidebar, they have sections covering Telgraph, Telephone, Radio and more.

Susan went with Eisenhower. She bet and lost it all.

Matt picked Ike, too. He also bet the farm and wound up with zero.

Khalilah was very excited after Matt’s bet was revealed because she knew she was the new Jeopardy! champ, right or wrong! She crossed Truman out and went with FDR. That cost her $4,401, but she won the game with the $2,399 she had left. Khalilah Walters is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (3/27/2020) Susan Alden, Matt Steen, Khalilah Walters

Reversal: HERE’S THE WINDUP ($200) Milkmaid, French & waterfall are 3 types of this twisty hairstyle – Susan’s response of “bun” was rejected in favor of “braids” from Matt. The judges gave Susan a thumbs up and she was awarded $400.

A triple stumper from each round:

IT’S A STRIKE ($1000) An 1892 strike at this man’s Homestead Steel Mill outside Pittsburgh led to a deadly confrontation between workers & strikebreakers

LATIN PHRASES ($1600) Julius Caesar summed up his victory in a 47 B.C. campaign with these 3 Latin words

We seem to be on a run of one-and-done champions, more or less. I won’t be shocked if Khalilah joins that category. She had her good moments, but any competent contestant would have clobbered her. Frankly, her side quips and frantic buzzer-ringing attempts were off-putting.
I’d rank this as one of the worst episodes ever. If you knew Truman was president from 1945-53, which is something every contestant should memorize, then FJ was not difficult. TV became popular in the late 1940s.

In addition to FJ, I counted 9 stumpers (including two DDs) that I got right. To me, the material was no more difficult than any other show.

  2. John Christian Ambion says:

@Lou is right on this. A very terrible mistake that all three NEVER finished above the five-digit mark in FJ! Also, the material proved to be TOO difficult.

  3. Ismael Gomez says:

We end this week with another triple stumper.

  4. Lou says:

Low scores today, a week of leader curses and difficult material all in one. I am not sure if our new champion will win three games so it’s all a wait and see sort of situation. My response was FDR for final today. I think Susan had nervousness and was unable to build rhythm. What were your thoughts on today’s game VJ? I was disappointed by the scores. Let’s hope kahllilah can build up her win next week before the college championship starts.

    • VJ says:

Well, I thought it was a hoot when Susan went with “Val” for Kilmer, as I’m sure many viewers did. I thought LeBron being outside of the literary world is what threw her. Maybe that wouldn’t have happened if they went with “Henry” instead of him.

Wow! is all I can say about FJ!

    • John Christian Ambion says:

You can say that again, @Lou. I’m much disappointed at the cancellation of March Madness and Eurovision. That’s how you describe today’s awful, terrible, no good, very bad game.

    • Richard Corliss says:

@Lou, first the Jeopardy.com website said the Teachers Tournament was gonna be on May 4-15th. It was on the Mark Your Calendar section. It first appeared on February, and for some reason, they took it off shortly after the beginning of March.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

VJ, you forgot to put down the reversal clue.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

Oh, man! This night had it’s ups and downs.

    • William Weyser says:

This week mostly had downs, when it comes to Final Jeopardy!. I want Ups every day next week.

      • Richard Corliss says:

Well, it happened before Erin McLean won the fall 2010 College Championship.

        • William Weyser says:

Yes, I know that, and in the 1st Week of the 2010-B JEOPARDY! College Championship, everybody got Final Jeopardy! Right every day that week, and that has never been duplicated, but on the week that Erin McLean did win the College Championship, and I’m still happy for her that she did that, that week wasn’t the player’s week to shine, in terms of responding correctly in Final Jeopardy!. Speaking of the College Championship, as you know, this year’s College Championship starts in 1 week from this Monday, and yes, I am ready for it. So, we have 1 more chance for something good to happen every day next week, before that starts.
