Final Jeopardy: Literary Characters (6-8-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/8/2015), in the category “Literary Characters” was:

This name made famous in a 17th century novel is derived from the Spanish for “sweet”.

New champ Chris Wonderly won $15,900 last Friday. Today he takes on these two players: Craig Moysey, originally from Brockville, Ontario, Canada; and Sally Wright, from Los Angeles, CA.

Round 1: Sally found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Health-Related Organizations” under the $400 clue. She was in third place with $2,200, $2,800 less than Craig’s lead. She bet $500 and she was RIGHT.

Chris finished in the lead with $7,000. Craig was second with $5,000 and Sally was last with $4,500.

Round 2: Chris found the first Daily Double in “World Facts” under the $1,200 clue. He was in the lead with $8,200, $4,000 more than Craig in second place. He bet $2,000 and thought it was the Barrier Sea. That was WRONG.

It makes sense that the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is in this sea.

In 1862 Alvan Clark discovered that this bright star has a companion called “the Pup”. show

Chris finished in the lead with $14,200. Sally was next with $9,700 and Craig was in third place with $8,200. Craig was awarded $800 after the break for his “Exodus” answer on this $400 clue in “Only The Lonely”: “In the 500s B.C. the Jews were in the Babylonian this type of expulsion from one’s land.” Sally said “Captivity” and Chris got it with “Exile”. So Craig went into FJ with $9,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS DULCINEA?

“The novel tells us the exact moment when Don Quixote decides on the woman who will be his great beloved: “Her name was Aldonza Lorenzo, and this was she whom he thought he might entitle to the sovereignty of his heart” (1.1.1.12). He also gives her the name Dulcinea because the name “sound[s] somewhat like that of a princess” (1.1.1.12). As the novel unfolds, Don Quixote picks fights to guard Dulcinea’s honor and even strips and starves himself as a punishment for daring to love a woman so beautiful.” (Shmoop.com: Dulcinea del Toboso in Don Quixote)

For the name meaning, see Behind the Name: Dulcinea.

Craig wrote down Casanova. He didn’t bet anything though so he remained at $9,000.

Sally got it right. Her $9,600 bet brought her up to $19,300.

Chris also got it right. His $5,500 bet won him the match with $19,700. His 2-day total is $35,600.

During the chat, Chris talked about how he got hooked on swing dancing.

Not sure how Casanova crept into fj. He was Italian and written about in the 18th century. Although I’m sure he would have loved being called sweet given his reputation. ♡

Sweet in Italian is dolce I think.

Congrats VJ and Chris. A little strange bet by Chris i think. If he bet more than 5.199 he might as well gone all or nothing. But it bet off anyway and the California girl got it, so it seems she is up to date in Spanish (or lit.) Too bad that it did not win her the game, since Chris only netted 2 K with the 2 DDs (1 right, one wrong), Overall deserved though and I am pleasantly surprised that 2 got it. Casanova means “new house” btw….

I didn’t know the tonight’s Pre-Final score change was Craig, when I expected Chris or Sally’s score to change. This didn’t say that in the Fikkle Fame. The Same Thing Alex did was 9/25/2013 and 03/27/2015 and now tonight.

Wow is all I can say. After his 4/5 performance in that book category “Heavy” in the first round, I thought for sure that Craig would get FJ, but it wouldn’t have done him a bit of good even if he did with that bet.

PS – Sally must have kicked herself for the low bet on that first DD.

Congrats vj. You nailed the correct fj 2 solves. I grossly underestimated this one.

Thanks for the 1972 video clip from the MoLM.

Congrats to Chris for being a 2-day champ. Good showing Chris.

      Good game.

Even if she had made that a true daily double, she would have only gained 1700 and would still enter FJ in 2nd place.

    • Eric S says:

Yes! Craig should have gotten FJ!
