WHO IS CHARLES GOODYEAR?

The Charles Goodyear Story on Good Year Corporate’s site relates how Charles Goodyear’s experiments with rubber started out in a jail cell and led to the accidental discovery of weatherproof rubber. “Goodyear saw rubber as what we know it is today: the first and most versatile of the modern ‘plastics.’ He perceived in it a ‘vegetable leather’ that defied the elements, an ‘elastic metal,’ a wood substitute that could be shaped in molds.”

Mark thought it was George Washington Carver. He lost his $200 bet, leaving him with $6,000.

Amanda went with Dupont. That cost her $4,000. She finished with $13,200.

Eric had Carver, too. He lost $14,101. That left him with $6,199 and made Amanda Holm the new Jeopardy! champ.

    [bawling in a Spongebob voice] What an intelligent man, how come did he lose to Amanda Holm and continue the curse of 5?! Why…why…why?!

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

    Whoever put this wicked curse after what happened today must pay!
    WHY! WHY! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? (in a Spongebob voice)

  6. Lou says:

    Looks like another curse put on Eric.And he didn’t get the win we hoped for but at least he is in the tournament of champions. Carver isn’t even close. I thought these guys knew about the Goodyear blimps that always flat overhead during sports events right John and VJ? Oh we’ll by the time the teacher tournament arrives hopefully we.Will have a strong winner. There is the all star game we are going to see soon. I really hope this four game curse will be stopped and we have that fifth game winner soon.

    • JP says:

      One could know about the Goodyear blimp, as well as 1,000 other facts about Goodyear and the rubber industry and not have solved the clue in time.

  7. JP says:

    George Washington Carver crossed my mind as well due to “plant-based” in the clue.

    This is the first FJ that I really didn’t like in weeks. I think there were too many red herrings (plant-based, vegetable, leather, and metal). It was not obvious at all that “elastic” was the key word, and I don’t think 30 seconds is enough to sort through all possible inventors related to all possible red herrings.

    • JJ says:

      GW Carver was the first person who came to my mind, also, but I quickly dismissed it and starting searching/thinking elsewhere for the correct answer…

    • John B./I. says:

      @JP
      Plant based , yes. But Carver = peanuts etc….All it takes is one tough FJ or one that is absolutely not up your alley and…..BAM! Amanda seemed to have an inkling this might become a TS, hence her unusual, well, smart and risky bet. Now it’s up to her to break the jinx.

    • VJ says:

      I agree with JP — it was a stinky FJ. They should have had a more narrow category title at least (I love that “Wouldn’t It Be Rubbery” category title in the related clue). But I thought that either Eric would know this or he would get a runaway in this game. This 4-day thing has to end sometime!!

      It did look like he was going to run away with the game for a while so double congrats to Amanda for preventing that and winning to boot.

  8. Dal Higbee says:

    Amanda should have bet everything so that Eric wins and we could have finally had a five-timer.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Dal
      Well, her bet was risky AND smart, it won her the game. 5 (or more) wins seem to be hard to come by this season…..

    • aaaa says:

      Eric’s not making the TofC might well be because of Amanda wagering optimally from second place in FJ!

  9. John B./I. says:

    A week of extremes: 2 sweeps and 2 shutouts.
    Are the FJ clues getting tougher, the players weaker or are they more equal, so nobody can dominate for more than 2,3 games???
    Tough FJ btw. “Vegetable leather” and “elastic metal” proved to be too much of a stretch. Neither DuPont nor Carver had anything to do with rubber.
